She then looked seriously at him and asked, “How long do we know each other for? I know you only for one hour. I think you know me for the same amount of time, right?”
Seeing him nod, she continued, “How do one trust another person after getting to know each other for a mere hour?”
Her eyes turned dark as she asked again, “Were you never betrayed by a person whom you thought that you know the most?”
William froze in his spot at her question.
How could he answer this question? The answer is a Yes. That is for sure. But he couldn’t bring himself to speak the answer out loud.
“Did you see? You can’t even answer this question. But I can understand from your reaction that someone really betrayed you. And this betrayal caused you so much pain that you were still unable to accept it. If you can really accept the fact, you could have talked about it very casually already.
“I can see that now you would understand how it feels to be betrayed by someone you trusted. If a person that close can betray us, then why can’t a person whom we met for an hour not betray us?” Samantha spoke logically making William unable to give an answer.
Yes, how can one trust a person whom they met for a mere hour?
It is true that he felt close to Samantha even though the amount of time they spent with each other was a mere hour. He knew that she too felt comfortable with him.
They both had already started treating each other as friends. A good friend to be exact.
To make someone a friend, there would be no need to think for ages. Just one single conversation could make the other feel that they had been friends for ages.
Just one common topic would be enough to create a bond between the two.
There is no need to treat the friends as strangers and use contracts between them for every simple issue.
But how about William and Samantha? Can they treat this deal as lightly?
Could William really trust another friend after being betrayed by his closest friend just a few days ago?
That very friend was the reason he was now forcing himself to enter this engagement after all. How could he forget about that betrayal so easily?
It is really the most painful experience to get betrayed by the person one trusts the most. He could understand this fact.
He had to go through that pain by himself after all. In fact he was still going through it. Just a few hours ago, that close friend had tried to kill him the second time already.
He was lucky enough to be still kicking and alive like this. To go through another similar pain? He would like to pass.
He gave a look of appreciation towards Samantha. She clearly explained it through his point of view instead saying that she doesn’t trust him.
Because she explained it this way, he understood that it is not like she doesn’t trust him.
Instead it was because she doesn’t dare to trust anyone, and that included him.
It means that she was also betrayed by someone very close to her.
‘Who betrayed you?’ He wanted to ask her but before a word came out of his lips, it came to a stop.
Being a man, he couldn’t dare speak about such a terrifying experience. How could this lady be able to talk about her own experience?
She had fulfilled her duties as his friend by thinking everything from his point of view. Now it was his turn to fulfill his duty as her friend by not asking her to relive the painful experience and be understanding towards her.
But it looked like Samantha had once again understood what he was thinking about and spoke with a smile, “You don’t have to worry too much about me. The only betrayal I felt was from my Father. I was grown as my Father’s little princess from the time of my birth.
“So, I can’t bear the fact that he ruthlessly banished my mate just because he did not accept his so-called ‘social status’.”
Though she talked about her story lightly, William actually understood her hidden emotions.
As she said, she had lived as his Father’s little princess from her birth. Being called a little princess showcased how much dependency her Father gave for her.
Yet when the time came for her to actually depend on him, he ruthlessly pushed her away.
It was one thing to not accept her love. He even had to go to great lengths of banishing her mate from the pack, turning him into a rogue.
He did not stop there either. He even went forward and forced her into this marriage with William.
It was already as clear as day that she did not want to get married to someone she did not love. Yet William himself had witnessed the look of warning that Henry gave to Samantha earlier when they headed here for their walk.
How could a father give that look of warning to their ‘little princess’?
If this didn’t hurt Samantha then what else would?
Though William didn’t have a Father that he was proud of, he could at least understand the pain of getting betrayed by the person one was the most close with.
The pain that she was now suffering should be similar to the pain that he felt from Steve’s betrayal. It may even be more too. He didn’t know but he could estimate.
“There is no one else here that could support you against your Father?” William couldn’t help but ask her.
Samantha looked at him, pursed her lips before shaking her head, “No, I have a brother. My brother would have gone against my Father.. But he...”
