Chapter 9: Work My Way Through (1)

“Evan, baby? Could you come here for a bit?” The mother called out to her child as she sat in front of her laptop and typed away.
“Yeah mom, what do you need?” Evelyn walked downstairs dressed in her brother’s clothes and stood in front of her while using her best male voice possible.
“Your father’s been having a horrible stomachache, he’s stuck in the bathroom, could you go buy him some medicine?” The mother said as she continued typing away. “I’m still working at the moment and there’s a call that starts in five minutes…”
“Yeah, no problem. You need anything else while I’m here?” Evelyn asked as she grabbed her brother’s jacket which was put on the hangers in the living room where her mother worked. ‘Dad’s probably having a stomach ache cause he forced himself to eat all of mom’s food from yesterday… He really is a brave soldier…’ She thought to herself.
“If it’s not too much, could you go grocery shopping as well? The list is on the refrigerator.” The mother said as she clicked something with her mouse then began typing again.
“No worries, I got it.” Evelyn said as she grabbed the list from the refrigerator. ‘I guess I’ll be the one to cook tonight… though I wouldn’t be surprised if mom wanted to test a recipe again.’
“You’re surprisingly helpful today, did something happen?” The mother asked as she turned to her son.
“Huh? Nothing, I just thought you might need help is all…” Evelyn said as she showed an awkward smile. ‘Hell my inability to say no, my bad habit of doing everything I’m told… don’t blow my cover…’ She thought to herself.
“I see… you want something, don’t you?” The mother asked as she crossed her hands. “Come on, tell me. Your being such a good kid that I’ll even buy it for you…”
“No mom that’s…” Evelyn suddenly stopped and then slowly continued. “Actually… if you could get me the limited edition MC figurine of LPA that would be…”
“Alright, you can order it as soon as you get back. Now go and hurry up to the store. Here’s money for everything.” The mother said as she smiled and handed her son a 100$ bill. “Keep up the good work.” She said with a smile on her face.
Evelyn nodded her head but right before she was to leave the mother called out to her again.
“Ah, sorry Evan, just one more thing… Could you help me make dinner again tonight? Seems like your father’s stomach ache isn’t going away soon, he probably ate something bad at work today…” The mother asked as she turned to look at her son again.
‘No, mom… he didn’t eat anything bad outside, it was your food that made him like this…’ Evelyn thought to herself as she held back the urge to voice those very thoughts. “Mom… we could maybe order something instead?” She suggested.
“I would but… did you see the big smile your father had on his face yesterday? I want to make him something like that again, but I need your help.” The mother said as she rested her chin on the palm of her hand.
‘Dear lord… mom’s going to poison dad one of these days…’ Evelyn thought to herself as she replied. “Alright, I’ll definitely make something good but you don’t need to help me.” She said with a smile.
“Really on your own?” The mother asked in a surprised voice.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine. After all I’ve inherited your cooking abilities.” Evelyn said as she headed to the door. “Oh, aren’t you going to be late for that meeting thingy?” She asked as she turned back to her mother.
“Oh, you’re right!” She turned back to her laptop, the meeting had already started without her.
Evelyn made her escape and headed to the store… It wasn’t too far away, it was in fact in walking distance of their home so she didn’t find it necessary to get her car. Not to mention doing so would blow her cover since her brother doesn’t have a driver’s license and she does.
‘Well… I guess I scored Evan the figurine plus mom’s goof favor which is even better…’ Evelyn thought to herself as she walked calmly through the streets.
‘I’ve never thought of this before but… I’ve probably never walked alone at night like this… but now being dressed like a guy like this is somewhat… I don’t know…’ Evelyn couldn’t very well understand it herself, she wasn’t someone that went out at all much less at this time of night alone but there was something liberating about being outside dressed like a guy.
‘Maybe this is what Evan meant when he told me he enjoyed dressing up as me… being perceived as the other gender does come with its perks…’ She thought to herself.
‘Now… guys aren’t staring at me… nobody’s approaching me either and trying to talk with me… they’re minding their business…’ Evelyn thought to herself as she looked around, in the store which mostly had male patrons there, somewhat around her age. None of them went up to her which usually she was used to.
Evelyn was a very beautiful girl, and more than anything she liked wearing dresses that were very feminine and maybe even eye catching, despite the fact she didn’t like other people looking at her. She was never really able to go to the store dressed as herself without some man coming up to her and trying to get her number.
Now that she wasn’t wearing any make up, she was with her brother’s baggy and somewhat edgy looking clothes and the wig she wore was short. Nobody approached her, everyone thought of her as a boy and thus didn’t pay any mind to her, even though she had the exact same face as before, even though she was the same person, people perceived her very differently…
On her way back from the store Evelyn couldn’t help but wonder how Evan was doing on the date he went to in her stead…
