Chapter 2: Star

1605 Words
I run across the territory until I reach the east exit. I have a gut feeling that tells me I have to run this way. This is the way to Mate. I keep running. I can’t stop. Finding Mate is the only way to help Milly. I have to find him. I rush through the gate as the guards scream at me. I won’t stop, not even for them. I keep heading east. It is the direction of Mate. Mate has to be here. I keep running and running until I can’t run anymore. My body has worn down and I am hungry. Okay, so I need to hunt and then I can keep looking for Mate. Once I have done that, my hunger is gone. Now I have to run again. I have to keep running. I keep running until the sun goes down and the Goddess’s light shines over me. I stop. I need her to know how hurt my human is. I raise my head high and give a hollow and mournful howl to my Goddess. When those few moments are over, I start back running. I have to keep running. I have to find Mate. I run until I find a cave hidden amongst the snow. I sniff inside to make sure it is safe when I smell something. I smell wolves. Not werewolves, but normal wolves. I stick my head inside and give a small huff. Their alpha presents himself and I bow low to him. “Please, may I stay the night with you and your kin? Just the night is all I ask.” The alpha c***s his head to the side and sniffs me quickly. “You are no rogue. You are an alpha she-wolf with the human world. Why do you seek asylum with my small and humble pack?” I look into his eyes and I whimper. “My human is hurt. I am trying to find our mate to help fix this issue.” The alpha wolf nods his head and looks back at me. “You may rest for the night. Drink some of our water on our hunting grounds and eat before you depart in the morning.” I bow low to him again. “Thank you for your hospitality.” I drag my tired and withered body inside of his cave. I find an empty corner of it and curl up and go to sleep for the night. I wake up in my home land and find my Goddess in her normal spot under her tree. “Come close, Star.” “My Goddess… What am I supposed to do? My human has gone into a depressed hibernation in our mind. She won’t come out.” My Goddess smiles softly and sighs. “You have to keep heading east. In six days you will find the pack that your mate is in. You must know that this journey is not going to be easy for you or for Milly.” I wake with a start as the sun starts to peek into the cave. Okay, I have to keep going. I stop and drink as much water as I can and I find another animal for a meal before I continue to head into the sun. I keep heading east as my Goddess instructed. I jump over logs and through thickets of brush as I search for my mate. When day two of running finally ends, I find a small abandoned cave to curl up in. I will rest here for the night until morning comes. When dawn breaks, I repeat the steps of day two all over again. I make sure to eat, drink, and sleep. Bathroom breaks happen during the drinking part, but other than that, I keep running. I end up running about one hundred and twenty miles per day over the course of sixteen hours. It isn’t a super fast pace, but it is much faster than if I was walking. I repeat this routine for days four, five, and six. I cover so much natural terrain that I forget that deep inside of me, there is a human who is hurting and mourning the life she dreamed about but never got to have. On day seven, that is when I find traces of where I am supposed to go. I catch the whiff of a scent that is so very faint. It smells like home, but where is home? I keep running towards the scent. I have to find Mate. I have to find Mate. I run until I hit a human town. I stay in the shadows of their treeline and keep heading east. Where did that scent go? It was right here. There it is! I keep following the scent until I hit the border of a new wolf territory. That is when things started to get a bit more interesting. As I burst across the territory line, growls fill the area around me. I look back and see several of their warriors running after me in their wolf forms. What should I do? Do I keep running? Do I let them take me in? Do I smell like a rogue to them? I don’t think I do. Do I? I decide to stop running and I lay down on my stomach. I refuse to yield to them and show myself as weak, but I will not fight them. I lay my head on my paws and try to figure out who is in charge. When one of them finally shifts, I am truly able to understand what they are wanting. “You are on the land of The Snow Moon Pack. Who are you and what do you want?” I whine in response and the human’s eyes go wide. “You can’t shift back into your human form, can you?” I whine again and shake my head in response. This human approaches me and I lean away and raise my hackles. “Please… Let me help you. My name is Hunter. I am the Gamma of Snow Moon Pack. Please… Let me help you.” I lower my head and rest it back on my paws as Hunter comes closer. He gently strokes my head and sighs as I allow him to rub behind my ears. I continue to whine as the pain of my human starts to soak into my bones. My poor Milly… What am I going to do? “Gamma, what is the plan?” Another warrior comes closer. I am unsure who or what he wants, but he can go away. I just want to lie here for a little while longer. My bones and joints all hurt from what I have been doing the last week. Hunter continues to pet my head as I rest my eyes. “We are going to take her back to the pack house. I’m not sure what we are going to do once she gets there, but we have to take her back to the pack house. Maybe she will shift when she sees other wolves in their human forms.” The same warrior swallows hard. “What if she doesn’t shift back..? What do we do then?” Hunter sighs and looks into my tired eyes with worry and sadness. “We will have to house her until Alpha Andrew returns from his trip. Once he and Beta Austin are home, then we can go from there. We will have to give her a warm place to sleep, fresh food and water, and make sure she can run and play until we figure out what is going on with her human side.” The warrior nodded his head. “Yes, sir. Would you like us to head home and tell them to prepare a room in the house?” “No. But do head home and ask them to be prepared for a guest. I will make sure she gets back to the pack house in one piece.” The warrior nods his head and shifts back into his wolf. He and the other warriors take off running east and I yawn. I am so tired. I have finally made it to where my Goddess wanted me to be… I think. Gamma Hunter pats my head and I look up into his eyes. “Come on, we need to make sure that you get to the pack house. I will shift. Just follow close behind.” I whine as he stands up and shifts into his wolf form. I sigh and stand up too. I have to follow him and trust him until Milly gets better. He takes off at a slow trot. We are still heading east, but it is more southeast. I must have been off a little bit in my direction. As we continue on our short trek, the smell of other wolves hits my senses. It is so nice to be around others. I didn’t like being a lone wolf. It is so much worse than being a rogue. As the buildings start to become more prominent than the trees, I notice one huge building rising high into the sky. This must be the pack house. I wonder if I can wake Milly up now. Milly…? Are you there? Yes. What is it, Star? I’m not ready to come back yet. Okay. I just wanted to let you know that we are safe. Just keep resting. When you are ready, you can take back control. I sigh. Oh, Milly… What am I supposed to do?
