Chapter 11 His "Good" Intention

968 Words
When Charlotte arrived at the office two days later, Noel took her to the sales department. "What is this supposed to mean?" "You've just started working, Charlotte. Miller Group is a giant company. It has many departments, and each one is crucial," Noel said with a smile. Charlotte listened to him patiently. "Don't get me wrong. What Gerald means is that you can work in other departments. That way, you'll not only get to know other employees, but you'll also learn more. Killing your days in the office, reading papers, or making him coffee won't teach you anything. You know that ain't your best place," Noel said as politely as he could. He was so polite because Charlotte was no ordinary employee. He had heard Charlotte claim to be Gerald's wife, and the latter had not denied it! Noel had long been working in the company, and he knew how Bruce treated Charlotte. So, Noel had been very polite to her these days. If she hadn't been Gerald's wife, he would have put it bluntly and wouldn't have explained at all. "Did Gerald put you up to this?" "Yes, he did," Noel said. He wouldn't dare to make such a decision himself. He hoped that Charlotte could see his dilemma. "Well, thanks, I got it." "Charlotte..." "Save your explanations. I know it's not up to you." Charlotte knew that Noel, as a subordinate, had to go by Gerald's words. Noel let out a sigh of relief and complimented, "That's quite thoughtful of you." Charlotte understood, of course, that Gerald had deliberately transferred her to another department. He wanted her out of Natalie's sight! It was he who chose the sales department to torture her. "Then, please thank Gerald for his 'good' intentions for me!" Noel froze and smiled wryly. He knew well that Gerald meant no good in such a move! Gerald loved Natalie and almost spoiled her. Yet whenever he saw Charlotte, he would be instantly annoyed. "Please follow me. The sales director is Dale Howard, and I've already said hi for you. He's a great guy!" Noel did that out of sympathy. After all, he couldn't bear to see such a lovely lady suffer. "Thanks for that!" Noel felt embarrassed. He knew that Gerald was only kicking her away, but he could do nothing to stop Gerald. He wouldn't dare disobey Gerald... "And here we are. Go and say hi to your new pals! I'll get going," said Noel as he immediately fled. Miller Group was a big company with many subsidiaries. Consequently, its sales department was a hurt locker jammed with dozens of full-on beasts. Dale scanned the innocent Charlotte up and down and asked in mild confusion, "You're Charlotte Anderson?" "That's me. Nice to meet you, Mr. Howard." Dale grumbled in his mind. In his eyes, Charlotte looked much more like a dainty secretary than an order hauler. "Well, let me introduce you to everyone." After the introduction, Dale got a random guy to show Charlotte around the office. Charlotte had practically no experience, especially none in sales. Consequently, everyone took her as a fine-faced tourist that would get up and leave in a few days. "May I see some customer profiles?" Charlotte got no answers. She looked at everyone busy with their own business, some on the computer, some on the phone, some haggling, and some nailing orders on the spot. One even rushed out with a briefcase, seemingly on his way to meet a client. She was entirely out of place. People do get curious about her, but not enough to teach her anything! After all, everyone cared more about his own KPI than a random newbie. Consequently, Charlotte had an idle morning. Noel called in by lunch break, "Charlotte? Bruce and Gerald got into a fight over you!" Charlotte hung up the phone and immediately took the elevator up to the 28th floor! After Noel saw Charlotte, he asked her to come over, "Bruce almost slapped Gerald!" Even though the door was tightly shut, she could still hear the quarrel inside! "Dad, are you really going to hit me for a nobody?" "She ain't a nobody, kid! She's your wife!" "You forced her on me! I never said yes!" "You jerk! You guys are already married!" "Yes, I am married to her, and that's your idea. You don't get to tell me how I'm treating her!" Bruce turned green, "Argh!" "Dad, I'm not a kid anymore. You don't tell me what to do! Leave me alone on this subject, or I might do something crazy." Gerald knew there was no way out of such a marriage. Yet he was too new to his position, so Bruce still had his eyes on him. "Why did you put Charlotte in sales?" "That was some fast snitching." Bruce went from green to pale. He snarled, "She's a good girl, never a snitch as you thought!" Gerald didn't buy it. He couldn't wrap his brain around how his dad sprang at him right after the board meeting. Bruce was way too quick! A smashed glass woke Charlotte from her freeze. She then went straight inside without further ado. "Charlotte?" She smiled at Bruce and said, "Lunch time. Let's grab something together, shall we?" Bruce calmed himself, "Come here." "Bruce, the sales department is pretty good. I can learn a lot there." "Ain't the place for you!" Bruce shook his head. It was a place where getting turned down was part of one's daily job. "Just let me try, dad. I'm up to the challenge." Yet Bruce knew Gerald meant to shoo her away instead of training her. "Bruce, let's go. I'm starving." Bruce then had to glare at Gerald and leave with Charlotte. Gerald sneered, thinking she sure knew how to please his old father.
