Chapter 13 Just a Stepping Stone

1344 Words
Hearing the serious warming, Francis soon stopped his move. Charlotte and he both looked at where the sound came from. Charlotte was surprised. It was Noel, who was not supposed to be there! Nevertheless, it was great to see someone was here for her. Noel truly helped her get out of this trouble! She quickly walked towards Noel and wanted to leave with him now, ignoring Francis's whisper behind, "I'll let you sleep on it. Hit me up if you change your mind!" Charlotte wiped her wrist with a wipe, feeling disgusted. The thought of his face made her sick! On the way back to Miller Group, she sincerely thanked Noel. If it weren't he, It could be a terrible day for her! "it's Gerald. He sent me here." While Noel wouldn't take all credits. "After he knew you went to Carson Group. He immediately sent me here. Although he didn't say what he wanted me to do, I know he was worried about you." A few hours ago In Gerald's office, Noel whispered to Gerald, "Charlotte went to Carson Group." Gerald paused for a second but spoke nothing. Noel continued, "I heard that Francis Moore, the sales manager there, is a lecher." Gerald still remained silent. Noel could only sigh in his mind. "I remember we left something unclear in our last negotiation with Carson Group. You go there to wrap things up. " Hearing Gerald's words, Noel couldn't help but smile. He knew what Gerald truly meant. "Charlotte? I thought you hated her." "Who said it's about her?! Noel, you went too far!" Noel seemed to finally realize Gerald was his boss, daring to see nothing but soon off to Carson Group. I am not worried about this sneaky b***h! Just...I am Gerald Miller. I won't torture a female in this way! It's nothing with Charlotte! Gerald kept persuading himself in his mind. Charlotte returned to the office then. Everyone knew she was in trouble when they noticed she looked unhappy. Thomas felt guilty for her being like this, so he tried to comfort Charlotte, "Charlotte, you're still new at the sales. It's tough to be a salesperson." Charlotte just glanced at him and didn't say anything. Linda called in at the end of the day to invite Charlotte to dinner at Natalie's place for the night. Before Charlotte could refuse, Linda started roasting her over the phone. She could only say yes despite not wishing to see Natalie. When her shift was over, Charlotte packed her things and went downstairs. She was about to take the subway when she saw Natalie waving at her outside the building entrance. "Charlotte! Over here!" Charlotte stood still. Natalie immediately came up and caught her hand, "Come, or we'll get caught in a jam! Grandma told you to come over. What's the holdup?" "And what brought you here?" "Just passing by. Thought I could pick you up on the fly." Charlotte didn't believe a single word of Natalie. "Hop in!" "I've got the subway. You can go first." "Forget the subway! You've got a free ride. Don't keep Grandma waiting! You know how pissy she can get." That was true, except granny only got pissy against Charlotte, never Natalie. When Charlotte got to the car, she saw Gerald sitting in the driver's seat. At this point, she finally understood how she had passed by this place. Of course, it is another good chance for Natalie to show off. Natalie opened the back seat door and urged her. Charlotte tried to smile and finally had to get in. Natalie knew that Charlotte was already married to Gerald, but she didn't even think about leaving the shotgun seat to Charlotte. Every time Gerald went to school to pick them up, Natalie would sit in the front and hog the conversation. Charlotte was always practically non-existent. "We can go now, Gerald," Natalie said. Gerald hadn't even looked at Charlotte since she got in. Charlotte kept silent the whole way, and Natalie somehow followed her. They then had to sit in awkward silence. The Thompson family had a huge downtown place elaborately decorated, worthing millions of dollars. Gerald was the sole reason that this family had such wealth. He helped grow their textile factory and helped with their sales, hauling them millions every year. Meanwhile, Charlotte was the poor kid that nobody ever loved. She had no parents, and her aunt and uncle pretended to be nice to her. What was worse, the man she had a crush on only liked Natalie. Charlotte lost her father at ten. Mia had wanted to adopt her but was stopped by George. After all, Charlotte still had her own family. After Wayne's death, Charlotte had to move in with her grandparents. She also lived with the Thompsons for a while in junior high. She then went to a boarding school. On her days off, she would only go to her grandparents' place. "Well, here we are," Gerald said. He walked behind Charlotte and Natalie after parking the car. Joan Thompson was very joyful when she saw the three of them. "Welcome, you guys! Dinner's ready. Come on in." Gerald was a welcomed figure in this household. The entire family hurried to greet him. They totally ignored Charlotte standing behind Gerald. Charlotte greeted them in a low voice, "Aunt Joan, uncle Peter, grandma. Hi." Peter had been talking to Gerald all the time. Gerald was not a talkative person, but it was clear that he was already familiar with the Thompsons. This was probably because he had been here a million times. Everyone was around Gerald, so Charlotte was left unattended. She had no choice but to sit next to her cousin Olive. Gerald sat next to Natalie like a couple across the table, making Charlotte look like the unwanted one. "Try the steak, Gerald. Don't wait till it's cold," Joan reminded. The meal looked almost like a Christmas dinner. The Thompsons did this for Gerald. "Gerald, I heard from Natalie that you took over Miller Group?" Gerald nodded, "Starting today." Peter nodded and was exhilarated, "Gerald, you're amazing! Running a big company at such a young age. That's amazing!" Charlotte heard their conversation and was a bit stunned. She still had no idea that Bruce had given Miller Group to Gerald. She thought she still heard Bruce talk about a board meeting some days. She never expected that the group was under Gerald's command, and Bruce's reign was already history. "Gerald, you and Natalie are lovely together," Linda hinted. Oliver then asked, "Gerald, when will you marry Natalie?" Everyone then fell silent. Charlotte sneered, for Oliver might not know Gerald was already married. Joan glared at her son and reprimanded, "Hey, Oliver, don't be ridiculous." "I didn't put it wrong. I thought Gerald was Natalie's boyfriend," Oliver said in his own defense. He did not know that Gerald's legal wife was right next to him. Seeing that everyone was embarrassed, Peter immediately broke in, "Gerald, please don't mind. Olive knew nothing!" But it sounded like he didn't think Oliver was wrong. Gerald remained silent, yet the Thompsons were relieved to see that he was not provoked. Natalie was worried that he would feel offended and immediately switched the topic, "Here. Try these braised shrimps." Charlotte sat among the Thompson family like an outsider. She even didn't get a chance to talk. After finishing the meal, Linda asked Charlotte to do the dishes. Charlotte didn't say anything. She just started to take all dishes to the sink without even looking at Gerald. However, he did look at her. Charlotte had just walked into the kitchen when Natalie followed. She walked over to Charlotte and asked in a low tone, "Now you know why Gerald married you, don't you?" Charlotte froze as her eyes flickered, but she didn't say anything. Natalie sneered. "He just wants to take over the company. Otherwise, why would he ever marry you? Charlotte, wake up! You are just a stepping stone for him. Wanna win his heart? You dream!"
