The King's Worry

'She may be the one, your Highness! But we can't be sure unless you do the needful' Josiah mindlinked back. Lucian fidgeted. He returned his gaze from the window, only to find Summer's gaze still fixed on him. He smiled a little and said, "welcome to the Kingdom Princess!" and turned around to leave. Summer frowned at the strange man he was. She looked in between Matty and Theodora in a questioning gaze. Theodora got a clue and said, "Oh Princess, that was King Lucian Moonchild, your husband to be." Summer stilled. 'My husband to be? So the whole marriage thing was real? I'll be married to that handsome guy, the King? And become a Queen? Now I understand why everyone has been referring to me as princess!’ she thought, already feeling so attracted to him. Summer smiled for a millisecond but her smile fell as she thought of how unwelcoming the king seemed. Does it mean he didn’t want her? Or maybe she doesn't qualify to be his? Summer’s spirit plummeted and her smile was replaced by a sense of despair. Meanwhile Lucian didn't wait for her to respond but left, his heart heavy. He didn't like the test she had to undergo but it was necessary. He already felt a massive pull towards this girl. This was one of the things that made him hopeful but he also knew that attraction didn't mean anything unless she passed this particular test. 'Timothy, hasten the investigations about the solitary wolves that attacked Princess Summer at the intersection. We need to find out how they knew about it. I suspect that this was planned,' Lucian told his Beta, Timothy Crows in a mindlink as he left Summer's room. 'I'm on it, your majesty!' Timothy responded. Lucian began to recall how important this chance was to him. It would be the third and last time if he got another mismatch this year. He was turning thirty-five in two months' time and that would be the end of his search as well as the end of his throne days if Summer isn't his match. Since he was fifteen, he started getting “sacrifices” from the convent but the past two were not his matches. The unfortunate thing was that these matches only came every ten years. Members of his pack never struggled to get their fated mates or “accepted” chosen mates but that has not been the case with the direct heirs of the Kingdom Yonder. They had always struggled to find their fated mates. It was as if they had been cursed to struggle in this department. Things haven't always been like that, it changed fifty years ago after a prophecy came that the Spirit wolf King would be fated to a very special Queen who would awaken his super-powers and make him the most powerful ruler of werewolves in North America. His parents didn't experience that, though they were fated mates. It was as if the goddess was deliberately making it difficult for the royals, particularly him to find his fated mate and Queen. Lucian was getting anxious because if he got another mismatch this year, it meant that he would have to forfeit his throne to his obnoxious cousin who never stopped to remind him of how his clock was ticking all these years. He should be married to his fated wife before he turned forty for him to finally lay a claim to the throne and get the sacred stuff that will enable him to have all the power and authority. His cousin, Macian Hunters was recently mated to his chosen mate Emeldah Bows who has special powers. Because of her special powers and the fact that she became his "accepted" mate, Macian was of the belief that she would be the Spirit Wolf Queen. For those who haven't found their fated mates, they could choose a mate, but the mate had to undergo the Shaman's fire test to be termed "accepted" before they could be legally mated. ‘The thick headed cousin of mine thinks being mated to that equally obnoxious girl gives him the right to the throne,’ Lucian scoffed. Ever since they were small, Macian had always competed with him for everything. He believed that the throne was rightfully his and for this matter, he believed that fate was on his side by delaying Lucian's fated mate. The legend says that the Spirit wolf heir has to be mated to a special woman before he turns forty. According to Macian, since Lucian was nearing forty without his fated mate and he refused to take a chosen mate, it showed that he wasn’t the rightful heir to the throne. The council of Alphas had concluded that their king should choose a mate but he was adamant on waiting for his fated mate. The legend had also provided them with a clue as to where this fated mate would come from, her s****l status and her age. Based on this legend, the pack went and made a pact with the small and remote convent at the base of the mountains to offer them a woman every ten years and in turn they would give them protection and supplies for life. Lucian went to the private library in the palace where he picked a brown leather-bound book that contained everything about this legend from the safe. He had constantly done this, to read and seal everything about the legend in his brain. He walked to the single couch by the corner, overlooking a French window and sat to read. The Spirit Wolf's Queen is an ancient legend of a powerful guardian spirit that has been said to protect and guide the people of the Spirit Wolf pack in North America. She is said to be the manifestation of the spirit of the Goddess and is often associated with the Wolf spirit. It is said that she is the one who will come to assist the pack when they are in need and is a powerful protector of the pack, offering her guidance and protection. She is said to have powers beyond the ordinary and is believed to be a spirit of great power and strength. Legends say that she is an angelic being, and her majestic wings can be seen from the sky. She is said to be able to take the form of a wolf or any other creature she chooses, and is said to be able to heal the sick and wounded. In the case of this particular legend which the Spirit Wolf pack had been waiting for, it is said she could be a human. Her beauty and power are said to be unmatched, and she is said to be a symbol of hope and strength for the pack. Lucian went back to his bedroom but his wolf Liam wouldn't give him rest. 'Make haste and prepare her for the test and don't delay. This time around I have a strong conviction that she is the one. Oh man, she is the most beautiful creature I've ever seen,' Liam gloated with a grin, pacing up and down. 'Liam, I know. I am very much attracted to her as much as you are but please stop pacing up and down my head. You will make me dizzy!' Lucian chided. While he was still in conversation with his wolf a knock resounded at his door. "Good afternoon your majesty! Prince Macian seeks your audience!" a servant informed him as soon as he opened the door. Lucian nodded and let off the servant. He closed the door and grunted. "What does he want this time around?" He said with annoyance. Lucian closed his door and walked to the private lounge where Macian waited for him. "Cousin! To what do I owe this visit?" He asked as he entered the room. Macian was an extremely annoying person, therefore he wished for him to get it over with as soon as possible and leave. Lucian was sure that he didn't come in peace but to taunt him as usual. If Macian was not royalty, he would have banned him from coming to the palace long time back. " Hello there cousin!" Macian responded, standing up and offering a light bow. He didn’t like it but it was mandatory to bow to the King or Queen. Lucian showed him a chair to sit as a form of courtesy though he was already seated when he entered. They both sat down and Macian grinned looking at Lucian. "What? Is there something on my face?" Lucian asked, dramatically wiping his face. "I came to check on our soon to be Queen! How is she doing? Is she that weak that she hasn't woken up for more than a week?" Macian said with a smirk. Liam let out a loud growl that almost shook the room. His eye color kept on flicking from blue to gray! "How dare you speak of her in that manner?" Liam asked, clear that it was him and not Lucian. "Calm down Liam, I'm only concerned that maybe she isn't the right one again cousin. You know that she has to be powerful, if not then you might need to take a chosen one. Unless you don't mind handing over the throne to yours truly!" Macian said with a shrug, showing no slightest fear. Macian believed he could challenge Lucian for the throne anytime. Though everyone else cowered under his aura, Macian has never showed any slightest fear. This was what made him believe he could be king. Lucian stood up. He was done with that knucklehead of a cousin. He left before he could injure him. He knew that the longer he stayed there and listened to him, the more chance he would strangle him. "Feel free to see yourself out when you finish that drink, cousin!" Lucian said, stressing the word cousin showing his annoyance as he walked off. "Hey cousin, I was just showing concern! Come on!" Macian shouted after him, chuckling.
