"Luke, I think it's time you take a chosen mate." My father said.
"I've told you time and time again, old man, I am not taking a chosen mate. I will wait. The Goddess knows what she's doing." I replied casually.
My father has been spewing the same sh.it for the last five years. Most wolves find their mates between the ages of 16 - 22. I turned 27 yesterday. It's very rare for a wolf of my age to be unmated. Especially one so high ranking.
Still, I will wait for my mate. I trust in the Moon Goddess. She will bring me the best mate.
And until then... I'll just keep having fun.
"I don't understand why you are so insistent on waiting. It's not like you haven't slept with every eligible she-wolf in the pack son." Dad said.
I chuckled at him.
"George, I think that your son is capable of making his decisions." Havi, our Alpha, stated. "If it comes to him never giving this pack a Beta heir, then we will discuss it later."
"We cannot discuss later. We are born into these roles, Alpha," Dad said.
Havi and I shared a look.
The two of us know the truth. Many years ago, it was my bloodline that was Alpha of this pack. My great, great, great-grandfather went totally nuts while he was Alpha. It was Havi's bloodline that had taken him down, and became Alpha. They were the Beta's/ That was how things got switched up.
Not that any of them will ever admit to that. Havi and I had only found out by accident. We only decided to keep it quiet because of me.
Honestly, I'm not Alpha material. As Beta, I have enough responsibilities. I could never handle being Alpha. Havi is way better equipped to handle that role.
"Listen Dad, I am not taking a chosen mate. I'll meet my mate eventually." I told my dad.
Dad growled, and looked at Havi.
"As Alpha, you must force him!" Dad shouted.
Havi looked at me. I rolled my eyes and shook my head. Havi chuckled awkwardly, and put his hand on my father's shoulder.
"I apologize, George, but I will not be doing that," Havi said. "I do not believe in chosen mates."
"Ugh!" Dad shouted.
Suddenly, Havi's eyes glazed over. A second later, he shook his head. Then he steered my father towards the door of his office.
"Well, we have a meeting to get to. Your son has rounds to make. We should all get going." Havi said to my father.
Rounds to make?
Greg just let me know that there was a Vampire in the bar. A woman that is refusing to leave until she gets a drink. Havi mindlinked me.
A Vamp that isn't scared of being in the middle of our territory? I asked. Must be a bada.ss chick.
Yes, well, apparently that rouge we had been looking for was just found dead beside the bar as well. Have said.
You think this Vamp did it? I asked.
Only one way to find out. He replied.
Alright, I'll go see what this chick is all about.
*********************************************
When I walked into the bar, I saw the Vamp girl sitting at the bar. She had demanded another drink, but Greg was nervous now that he spotted me. Not that the woman was having that. She slammed her glass down ready to demand another drink.
I knew Greg was going to deny her. There was no way I was going to let that happen. Not when this girl smells so... Damn good.
I've never scented a Vamp that smelled this good. I think I'm possibly drooling. That can only mean one thing...
"I believe the woman said another Greg," I said, interrupting the woman.
The woman stiffened. For some reason, that made me happy. I smirked as I bent down to box her in. I'm so close that my skin is humming, begging me to just... touch her.
She turned her head, and glared at me. My smile widened as I looked at her angry face. I could have laughed at that moment. She didn't even react to the clear bond that snapped into place the moment our eyes met.
Her eyes are light green, a green that reminds me of jade stones. My favorite color. Her light blonde hair was flowing down her back in crinkly waves. Those pouty lips are pursed in anger. All I wanted to do was press my lips to hers. Angry or not.
"Well, hello there, mate." I said lowly.
The woman just stared at me for a moment. I moved the stool next to her closer, and sat down. I was still only inches from her.
"Mate..." She muttered under her breath.
I smiled.
Greg slammed the glass of whiskey on the table. The woman turned her head to grab the glass. Then Greg slid a glass of whiskey towards me.
"What's a Vamp like you doing here? I'd understand if you were trying to get drunk, but we both know that it takes a lot of alcohol to get a supernatural drunk." I said.
She can do magic. Greg said.
My eyes snapped to his.
"Seems Greg has already told you," she said as she ran her finger around the rim of the glass.
I watched the glass turn green, and then back to normal. Then the woman tossed it all back.
"Whoa, that was cool. Can you do mine too?" I asked as I pushed my glass towards her.
The woman looked at me, and frowned.
"Aren't you here to kill me or something?" She asked.
"I admit that was the original plan, but then I found out you killed the rouge that's been terrorizing my pack." I said.
The woman didn't react.
Mate is strong-willed. Brute, my wolf said.
She is, isn't she? I replied.
"Now I find out you can do magic. Maybe I should keep you here for a while. Ya know, to get some answers out of you." I teased her.
The woman looked from me, to Greg, who was helping someone at the other end of the bar. She leaned over the bar top, giving me a perfect view of her plump a.ss. She grabbed the bottle of whiskey, and sat back down. I watched as she spelled the entire bottle before taking a big swig, and handing it to me.
"What do you want to know?" She asked.
Is she really going to tell me?
Ask her name. Brute urged.
"Fine, for starters, what's your name?" I asked before taking a swig myself.
"Emily," she stated.
"Emily," I repeated.
I like the way her name tasted on my lips.
I wish I had more of an effect on my mate. Emily only stared back at me. Like nothing about our meeting is affecting her.
"Do you know what we are to each other?" I asked as I handed her the bottle.
"Yes," she stated. "Next question."
That's all?
"Alright," I grumbled. "Why did you kill the rouge?"
"He killed 3 innocent girls. All of them were only children." She replied instantly.
My eyebrows shot up. Those were human girls. We had heard about it, but we were more concerned with the fact that the rouge was picking off the women in our pack. All young girls as well.
"How did you know that?" I asked.
"I was told," Emily replied.
"By who?" I asked.
I snatched the bottle right before Emily was about to take another swig. She scoffed as I took a drink.
"It is your employer?" I asked her.
"I suppose you could call him that," she replied.
I frowned.
"You're not... one of those Vamps that gets sold around, are you?" I asked angrily.
Brute started growling wildly in my head.
"No," Emily replied with an eye roll. "I work for the Vampire king. Doing things like this was my repayment to his kindness."
"Kindness?" I asked with raised brows. "The Vamp king? Luther?"
Emily nodded, and snatched the bottle from me.
"Well, that's interesting. Most Vamps only care about blood," I said.
Emily averted her eyes.
That was interesting. It was the first reaction she'd had so far. I wonder what that could mean.
"So, you're a Vamp that can do magic." I said as I handed her the bottle. "Care to tell me how that's possible."
Emily shrugged as she swallowed.
"It just happened," she said.
I chuckled, and leaned in closer to her.
"I know you aren't telling me the full truth," I said lowly.
I saw goosebumps rise on her arms. So, I do have an effect on her.
"What are you keeping from me, little mate?" I asked, staring into her light green eyes.
Emily stared back at me.
"I... was a Witch before I was a Vampire." She mumbled.
I frowned.
"Witches lose their powers after the change," I said.
"Yeah, that's what they say," Emily muttered.
"What's that mean?" I asked.
Emily tipped back the bottle, and set it on the table. She stood up, and I stood with her. Is she leaving?
"I should go." She said as she walked to the exit.
"Go?" I asked as I followed her.
Once we were outside, I grabbed Emily's arm, and turned her around.
"Look, I'm not as brutish as most Werewolves, but you can't just leave me. We're mates-"
"Stop saying that!" Emily shouted. "I have no mate. There must have been some kind of mistake."
"Whoa, why would you say that?" I asked.
"Because I am undeserving," she said as she turned back around.
I started walking with her.
"Undeserving? Why do you think that?" I asked.
Emily only shook her head. I jogged to stand in front of her. She stopped walking, and huffed at me.
"We are mates, you can't deny that. Just... come with me. I'll prove to you that you deserve a mate. That we belong together." I practically begged.
I've never begged a woman for anything in my life.
"I can't," she stated.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because..." she trailed off.
I reached out to grab Emily, but she stepped away.
"You won't want me when you find out who I am," she stated.
"That's ridiculous," I replied.
Emily huffed.
"Fine, you'll find out soon anyway," she said. "I am... Emily Anderson."
My eyes widened.
"See," she said. "I told you. So, just give up on me."
Then she was gone.
Our mate... Brute trailed off.
I know, I mumbled. Our mate is the primary Vampire... The one who stated it all. But she was wrong about one thing...
We still want her.
