Chapter 5: Aftershocks

Skye started joining drag races when she graduated in high school. She raced not just because of the bet but also for the enjoyment she gets on it. It actually felt good for her. But in this very moment, it's not. Because she was racing for her life. It will only took three minutes tops to get out on the woods in driving her motorbike on its full speed. But for the scared Skye, it feels like an eternity. When Skye steps on the asphalted road, she was finally relieved, but not totally though, because the fear was still there. She was so eager to get home but then her bike got slower and the engine suddenly turned off. She checked the gas and it was empty. She went to the side and tried to start it again but nothing happens. "Come on, Uno!" she exclaimed, starting it again and again even though she knew that it was no use. The gas was dried empty. "f**k!" she shouted and got down. It will get dark soon and she needed to get home. Or else, she will be stucked here on the road that surrounded by trees. Where the beast could be hiding somewhere. "Skye?" Skye turned around when a familiar voice called her. It was Maddison. Getting down from her car together with Levi. "What are you doing here? Why are you not wearing your helmet? Are yo-" "Oh thank God you're here." Skye cut her off and ran to her immediately. Hugging her very tight. And that's when Maddison knew there was something happened. "Are you okay? You're trembling, Skye. What happened?" Maddison asked her while holding on to her shoulders. She was so worried about Skye. Knowing that she's kind of a trouble maker herself. "I... I c-came to the woods. A-and you wouldn't believe w-what I just saw." Skye said breathing heavily and holding on to Maddison's hands tightly not wanting to let go. "What is it Skye?" Levi butted in but Skye didn't have a chance to answered him when Maddison spoke again. Staring at the blood on Skye's left hand. "Wait. Is this blood?!" Maddison held her hand. Her voice were tensed, obviously terrified seeing blood on her sister. "Is this yours, Skye?! Are you hurt?!" she was checking Skye all over her body for a possible injury. But there was none. Skye took a quick breath and started to speak. "No it's not mine and I'm not hurt Maddison. I...came from the woods. I-I followed the boy. The one I saw on Levi's neighboorhood a-and- Oh my God." Skye grab her hair with her hands when she remembered the boy whom she was chasing earlier. "f**k! That kid. I forgot about him. What if he's still there? We need to help him Maddie. We need to call the police. We need to go ba-" "Wait what? Police? What are you talking about Skye?" Maddison cut her off with a deep frown. She was so curious of the situation and so worried about her sister. Skye was shaking and her breathing was ragged. Maddison thought that maybe she's having a panic attack. But she doesn't know what the reason was. "But we need to-" "Skye, please calm down." "B-but-" "Skye! You need to calm down first so you can explained it to us clearly, okay?" Maddison cupped her face and force her to focus on her. Skye knew she was just panicking but she can't help the thought that maybe she possibly left a kid on the woods. Where that thing she encountered could be lurking around and could found the boy and will harm him. "Just breath okay?" Her sister said and she nodded at her. "Breath in. Breath out." Maddison held her hands and Skye did what she was told. She breathed in and out. She did it again until her breathing started to became normal and the panic slowly subsiding. "Are you okay now?" Maddison asked her after a moment and she nodded. "Then explain to us what happened." With a sigh, Skye started to speak again. "The boy I saw on your neighborhood. The one who had shaggy hair. " She started and glanced at Levi who was standing beside Maddison. He's oddly quiet throughout their conversation. "He happened to bump into me on the town earlier. He dropped his bag and I wanted to give it back to him but he ran away. I followed him and we ended into the woods. I found his bike on the ground but I didn't saw him there. And I don't know if he's still there or what." "Lucas." Levi suddenly said. He glanced at Maddison and turned to Skye again. "I think you're talking about Lucas. He is a smart kid Skye, don't worry about him. He knew this place by heart, even the woods. He can bring himself home. I bet he's home now." Skye looked at him and frowned. "How can you be so sure? It's been only thirty minutes since I last saw him. He couldn't have possibly got home. Your house was far from here. It's like an hour and a half walk till you get home. If you're right, then his lucky. But if not and he's still out there, hiding or something, I don't know what will happen to him if that thing that I saw will find him there." "What is it Skye? What did you see?" Maddison was the one who asked her. The couple were staring intently at her curiously waiting for her answer. "It's a wolf." Skye quietly said after a while. She doesn't know how to tell it to them in a way that they will believe her. "But not just any other wolf, Maddie. It was huge." Maddison and Levi glanced at each other for a moment and turned to her again. Both with a serious face. "What do you mean?" Maddison asked. "It was bigger than me." Maddison took a deep breath. She went silent for a while. Contemplating on something to say. But then she started to speak again. "Maybe the one that you saw was one of the largest species of wolf, Skye. Like canadian timber wolf. They can grow larger than the wolf we normaly see." "No." Skye said shaking her head vigorously. "I don't think it is. Look, I know I don't even have a knowlegde about animals but I know that, that thing, is extremely not ordinary. It was so big, Maddison. As big as a horse. Can you imagine that?" Skye didn't know what they were thinking right now but she knew they wouldn't just believe in her. Heck, she didn't believe what she just saw either. But she would do anything to make them believe her. Even if she would look like a lunatic. "I even think it's limbs were as big as those from elephants. It's paws were bigger than a horse shoe. And it's jaws were so wide, Maddie. Enough to finish me in maybe two or three bites. I started to think that it was way similar to a-" Skye didn't know what else to say to describe the beast but then a thought crossed in her mind. It was from the books she read. It was totally untrue but then she said it. "A werewolf." Skye furthered. Which made the frown on Maddison even deeper. A werewolf. Just like she read from the books. Where a certain human turned into a big and dangerous wolf when the fullmoon comes out? That's hilarious. She didn't even saw it transform and the moon wasn't out yet. But then she still indicated it as a werewolf. She didn't know why that's what she said but it's the closest one to named the beast. "I know it's unbelievable but I really saw one. And that beast nearly killed me." Skye continued, waiting for their reaction. Maddison was the who spoke first. Her face was calm now. But she still seems worried about something that Skye can't tell . "Are you really sure about what you saw?" She asked. "Of course I am Maddie." Skye defended herself. She was right. They would never believe her. "I know it's hard to believe but I'm saying the truth." Maddison glanced at Levi again, who's face were unreadable. Skye was not gifted by the ability of reading people but she hoped that these two would not think that she was crazy. "I know you do. But there's no such thing Skye. Werewolves are not real. They're just fictions." Maddison said. "I didn't mean it just like those on the books, Maddie." Skye laugh humorlessly. "I know that those were not reaI. I was just saying that-" "I think you need some rest, Skye." Her sister cut her off mid sentence. "We'll gonna talk about it tommorow. Can you drive her bike, honey?" Maddison said turning to Levi. And the latter nodded. "What?! No! I can-" Skye exclaimed. "Skye." Maddison said with a resigned tone. Skye looked at them. How could they be so calm about it? "You know what? I won't force you to believe me or whatever. It's okay. But I don't want to rest Maddie. Just please let me go to the police station." "They won't believe you Skye." Levi said. Looking at her with an unreadable yet concerned face. Skye took a deep breath and speak. "Don't worry. I'm not gonna tell them about it. I'm just gonna ask for help to find that boy. I won't just calm down and rest knowing that maybe he's still there. What if he's just hiding? And that monster will find him and... He won't go there if I didn't followed him in the first place." Skye said. She was feeling guilty even though it's not entirely her fault. And she's exhausted too. Both from the recklessly driving and from the fear. "I'll do it. I'm gonna find him." Levi volunteered but Skye instantly dissagreed on it. "No. It's too dangerous." "It's okay Skye. I can defend myself." "How can you?" "I don't know. But i'll find a way. Besides, I grew up here. I know every hiding places and shortcuts in the forest. And Lucas knew me too. If he's really hiding somewhere, I can talked to him." "But-" "He's right, Skye." Maddison intervened on their conversation. Cutting of Skye. "Let just leave it to him." Skye wanted to protest. Her stubborn self wanted to do so but then her tired body was stopping her. And her mind was in a roller coaster ride thinking about that beast. "I'll just borrow your bike for a bit. I promise I will take it home safely and as well Lucas." Levi said. He turned to Maddison and kissed her on the forehead. "I'll talk to you later. I love you." "I love you too. Be safe, Okay." Maddison replied with a worried face. "I will." Levi started to walk but then Skye stop him. "Wait! " Levi turned to her with a frown. The couple were both waiting for her to say. And she really wanted to stop him but then they will still wouldn't believe her. So she just took a deep breath and speak. "It's empty." she said. Talking about her motorbike. "Oh. It's okay. I have a spare gas on the trunk. I'll just get it." Levi walked to the back of the car. Opening the trunk and grab a container of gas and then closed it again. He went to Skye's motorbike and put all it's content to it. He left the empty container beside the road and get on the bike and then started it. "I'll go now." With one last glanced at them he finally departured back to where Skye just went through. "Come on, Skye. Let's go home." Maddison held her hand gently and she followed silently. Her legs felt like jellies when she walks and she guess she really needed some rest. *** Violet didn't know where part of the forest she was running now. Or even where she was headed to. All she could think of was the girl with an auburn hair and amber eyes. Mate. Her mind was telling her. In werewolves, there's many different ways to know if a person was your mate. For Abby, she was captivated by Emett smell. His own smell that for Abby's description was a calm and fresh smell. That didn't left on her nose as soon as they met each other. For Violet's parents however, they both felt their heartbeats even before they actually met. Violet knew almost all of these ways. But this one that she had just experienced was a first. As soon as she laid her eyes on those amber ones, she was lost. Like totally lost. But not lost on her own thoughts but for what she was seeing. It was almost like a dream even though she's not sleeping. On it, she saw the girl wearing an off-shoulder creamy white dress that ends just above her knees. Her dress was simple but she looked divine on it. Her short hair hanged loose with it's curls on the ends. She was walking barefoot on a certain part of the woods and Violet was following her. On fourteen meters ahead of them was a lake. Violet didn't know how but she knew they were heading to it. She just silently following her with an over flowing joy. There was so many mixed emotions she felt, but gladly, it was all good ones. She felt happy, contented, relieved and an intense urge to savage the girl in front of her. The girl suddenly turned to her whilst walking. She was wearing a bright smile. So bright that it reached her eyes. And she can felt herself smiling too. Not the menacing or devilish smile that she always wore but like the smile of a teenage girl who's having a chat to her longtime crush. The girl reached her hand out to her. And she happily hold it gently. Their hands fitted to each other. And Violet has nothing she could ever wish for than to hold this hand for the rest of her life and forever, if it could be possible. Mate. That's her mind said when it intervened to her dream earlier. Or if it was even really just a dream. Because as Violet think of it further, it was like her future. Their future. Because that girl was obviously her mate. The one she'd been waiting for. And also the one who she nearly devoured. Violet growled and ran faster. Running towards nothing, she thought. She finally found her mate and she was supposed to be happy about it but it turns out to be the other way around. She was angry. Angry for the thought that her mate is human. She doesn't mind it if she was a girl or anything. She can even love her if she doesn't have eyes. She would gladly accept anything about her mate. But not for being human. She hated humans. But not all of them, only some. Like those who think that they were monsters. Cursed and dangerous monster that's very harmful to the world and needed to be executed. Even though they didn't do anything but to live on their own. They tried to lived as normally as they could. Some of them even lived in an isolated places. Away from humans. And some even tried to help humans in anyways. But they were still punished for the sin that they haven't done. This thought just added to her aggitation and made her more angrier. She can communicate and get along with a human everyday, every hour, every minute or in every second. But to be mated with one ? She can't. Especially when the past keeps reminding her. Youre not humans, youre monsters! You all are! She halted when a certain memory crossed her mind. You all are! The anger that Violet felt was getting more and more she thought she will burst. She wanted to kill someone or destroy anything but then those were not good decisions to make so she just decided to let it out to the world. She howled. *** Maddison checked the sleeping Skye before she closed the door of her room. She walked down to the stairs with a worried face. Worried for her sister and for what she had seen. She went to the kitchen. She wanted to have a cup of coffee to stay up for the night. Because she knew that Skye will surely have nightmares, so she needed to stay awake when that happens. This isn't the first time at all. It happens many times before actually. Since they were kids, Skye had nightmares everytime she witnessed some horrible event. Just like when she nearly drowned on a twelve feet deep swimming pool on fifth grade when she accidentally slipped on the side and when their mother fainted in the midst of her eleventh birthday party and needed to rush to the hospital. Everytime it happens, their mother always there for Skye. But when she died, Maddison was the one who took that responsibility. Maddison made a coffee for two. One for her and one for her lover. Levi would be here maybe in a minute or in an hour. She knew he wouldn't end the day without seeing her. "How is she?" Maddison turned when she heard that voice. She smiled a little to Levi who was standing in the doorway of the kitchen. "She had a hard time falling asleep. But she's okay now." she said as she placed the two cups of coffee on the table before she sat on the chair. Levi walked and sat on the chair across Maddison. He took his own cup of coffee but he didn't drink it. He was just looking through it with a solemn face before he speaks. "Yeah, just for now." he said. "Hey." Maddison grab his hands. "She will be okay. I promise." Levi just stared at her and smiled. He was thankful for a while that he had Maddison. But then he remembered the earlier event. He had witnessed the intense fear on Skye and he somehow felt guilty about it. "I'm sorry." He said. His voice was deep and sad. "Don't say that." Maddison held his hand firmly which urge him to looked at her."It's not your fault okay? It's not you. And I know it can't also be Lucas." Maddison didn't know everything about werewolves but she knew that adolescent like Lucas couldn't be that big when he shifted. "It's not also from your pack, isn't it?" She asked. Pertaining to Levi's packmates. "No, It's not. They know Skye. They wouldn't dare to do it." he replied. "Then who was it?" Maddison asked. "It was Violet." "Violet?" Maddison muttered. She knew her. Levi and his family once talked about her before. "She's an alpha right? The fierce one." "Yeah. But don't worry, she didn't do anything to Skye. Lucas said it was all just a misunderstanding." "Misunderstanding?" Maddison said with a deep frown. Levi took a deep breath before he explained to her what really happened. "Lucas was struggling to shift when he bumped to Skye." He started. "He tried to hide in the woods to avoid her and so she wouldn't sees him shifted. But when he wanted to go out he got stucked and he cut his leg." he stared to his coffee for a second and then he continued. "Skye helped him on it. The blood on her hands, it came from Lucas. Then he said that when he ran away, Violet came, growling at Skye. He thought that maybe, Violet thought that Skye was hurting him. Lucas wanted to stop Violet for what she could've done to Skye but then he didn't. Because Violet didn't even touched any part of her. She just growled and ran away for no reason." Maddison stared at nothing particular when Levi finished. She didn't know what to say. All she knew that Skye is safe now. "Well. Thank God she didn't do anything to Skye. Because i'll really gone crazy if she does." she said. The thought of losing her sister crossed her mind. Her mother already left her. She can't make it if her sister will left her too. "She wouldn't do it Maddison." Levi said stopping her thoughts. Levi couldn't read her thoughts, but he can felt what she felt. "She is a pack's friend and I know her. She can be harmful. But she wouldn't hurt a comoletely innocent people. She was just protecting Lucas. I hope you will not think of her as a threat. " "No, I won't. I understand her point." Maddison said then smiled at her lover. "Don't worry about it." "How's Lucas by the way?" Maddison asked when she remembered him. "He's okay now." "And his legs?" She asked and tgen took a sipped on her coffee. "He's still limping because of it. But don't worry, it will heal itself eventually." "Ah yeah." Maddison smiled when she remembered their healing abilities. "It's one of your abilities. I almost forgot." She laughed a bit which made Levi smiled. "You won't drink it, will you?" She asked Levi pointing to his coffee that he didn't even took a sipped since he arrived. "Oh yeah. I'm sorry. I just didn't have an appetite." He said, smiling at her. "Then I guess I'll drink it then. Since I need to stay up for the night. Skye will surely have nightmares. I need to be there when she wokes up in the middle of the night. She'll get hysterical." Maddison said which made the smile to Levi's face suddenly dissappeared. "What if she decides to leave?" He suddenly asked. He was staring at her seriously yet dearly. "What do you mean?" "Skye. What if she decided to leave and go back to the city after what she had seen here?" Levi said. "And I know she won't leave you here too." Maddison thought about it also. There's a possibility that Skye will think of it. But then she hope that she will not. "She won't" she said. "But what if she does? You won't leave me right?" Levi's eyes were full of sadness as he says it. He can't bare to be seperated with Maddison. She was his mate. He couldn't live without her. "No. Ofcourse not. Why'd you think I will leave you? I love you, Lev. I won't do it to you." Maddison grab both of his hands and held it firmly. "And you love her too. She's your sister and you'll do anything for her. You have said it once. And you showed it many times." Levi said whilst carressing her hands with his thumbs. "Yes, I do. I would do anything for her. And I would do anything for yoi too. Because I love you both. Very much." Maddison smiled at her and Levi returned it with a greatful smile too. "But what if she does?" he still asked though. He needed to know what will his lover do if her sister decided to leave. "Then I guess it's time for us to think a most effective way to stop her." "How?" Maddison has something on her mind. She's not entirely sure if it will be successful but they needed to try it though. "You said you know someone ftom the police station right?" she asked. Levi's forehead form a creased. But then he replied. "Yes. He's from another pack but he's a friend of mine." "Can you contact him? I think he could help us."
