Chapter 6: Denial

3927 Words
Violet got home on the first peek of sunrise. She headed straight to her office as soon as she gets inside. Quietly walking up to the grand stairway and through the hallways to avoid waking up everyone in the mansion. She's still wearing the same clothes she wore yesterday but minus the heels as she decided to left it outside and just walked in barefoot. She opened the door when she reached her office and closed it as quietly as she could. Dragging her tired body and sat on the couch. She leaned back with a huffed. Laying her head and closing her eyes. Feeling exhausted from running all night long. Last night, her paws carried her to the mountains. She can't remember which part of the mouintain she was as her mind were clouded by thoughts. It was not part of her yesterday's plan actually. Running and roaming around the whole night. But after the event yesterday, she needed it. She needs to stay away for a while far from the others and anything else. Especially from the girl who invaded her thoughts the whole night. Violet had a hard time disposing the girl from her mind. Everytime she thought something else, the girl kept popping into her mind like an aggressive waves of the ocean. Which was impossible to stop when it came to you. Yes, it will be gone for a while but then it will came back to you again, and again. In shortened words, it was unstoppable. She was unstoppable. Anything about her was. She came to Violet's life in an instant. Unexpected. Unplanned. And then there she is, having a hard time washing her out. Violet knew it would do so much work and it will took a lot of time for their kind to resist their mate. Violet's anger grew as she tried to think anything else aside from her. But then her thoughts kept coming back to her. And her alone, nothing else .Violet didn't even knew her name, her age, or even where she lived. Heck, she can't even move on from the fact that she found her mate. And it grew her anger even more just thinking of it. She can still remember her scent. Sweet and refreshing. Like a vanilla with a mix of rain. It was so tempting. And she hated herself for wanting that smell so bad. "Where did you came from?" Violet's body twitched and she instantly open her eyes from the voice. Abby is standing at the doorway while crossing her arms. Violet stared at her with a grumpy face but her thoughts were somewhere else. She didn't answered Abby. Instead, she just took a deep breath then leaned on the couch again, closing her eyes. "You didn't heard me coming." Abby said. Her tone of voice laced with curiosity and there was a creased on her forehead as she closed the door. She got wondered and confused at the same time as to why her bestfriend got easily startled by her voice. Who wouldn't be if one of the strongest Alpha you've known who has a super sensitive hearing didn't heard her coming. It's for the first time. "That's a first." Abby commented. She walked and sat on the couch in front of Violet. She crossed her arms as well as her legs and leaned back. She was intently looking at her bestfriend, scrunitizing her. "What happened?" She asked. Werewolves can't read each other minds if they both wouldn't use the link. But they can somehow felt others. And she can feel that there was something bothering Violet. Violet didn't know what to say and she didn't even know if she should tell it in the first place either. Abby will be so damn happy if Violet would tell her the good news. For some other instances, she will gladly tell her so, if it wouldn't just for the fact that her mate is a human. And most importantly, for the past that Violet dreaded to happen again. She remained silent under Abby's scrunity. She didn't want her to know. She didn't want all of them to know. Even if they deserve it. Even if it was there soon-to-be Luna. Her Luna. "I guess you don't want to talk then. But can you at least tell me where did you came from? You didn't came home last night. I called you so many times but you didn't answered." Abby suddenly asked. Pulling Violet out to her ocean of thoughts. "To the mountains." she replied still eyes closed. Abby raised an eyebrow at her. "Mountains? You slept there?" She said, referring to her late father's two storey cabin that was built at the top of the mountains near the peak. Impossible for people to reach. It serve as their extra home whenever they decided to have a run to the mountains. But when her father died, Violet seldom go there. Sometimes when she had bothering thoughts or when she wanted to be away from anything that made her angry. Much angrier that she cannot handle, she went there. "Yes and No." Her short reply. But seeing her bestfriend irritated face when she finally opened her eyes, she explained it further. "Yes, I came from the mountains. And no, I didn't slept there." She said with a huffed. "So where did you sleep? Or you did something else?" Abby said squinting her eyes. "I didn't sleep." "All night?" "Yes." Violet stood up and went to her small bar. She grab a bottle of wine and a glass. She then carried it back to the couch and sat. Abby just stared at her throughout of it. She was not convinced. Her bestfriend only answered her question but she didn't tell what the problem was. Abby noticed that she's barefoot and her feet got some mud sticking everywhere. It brought suspicion to her. Because she knew her bestfriend too well. She would always get clean after running. This was the first time she let herself get dirtied. And it just kept Abby from asking further. "You know you can tell me anything right?" She said uncrossing her arms. Her annoyance grew everytime Violet avoids her concerns. "Violet, I'm your bestfriend." She added. Her companion just took a deep breath for a reply. She was calming herself. She doesn't want her anger to be directed to Abby. She might hurt her if she kept talking. But then, Abby being Abby, she still continued. "You're not really gonna tell me, aren't you?" Abby said. She got no response at all, only a deafening silence. "Well, I wont stop bothering you then. I will keep asking what is it or what happened. I will -" "Stop it, Abby." Violet interrupted. Massaging her forehead with her hand while her other hand was still carrying the wine glass. "-tried everything that I can do to force to you say-" "Stop it." Violet frustratingly said. "it. Because I can't just let you to deal with it all by yourse-" "I said stop it!" Violet shouted and slam her glass at the table. It cause a piercing sound all over the room and the broken pieces spread all over the table and on the floor. "Can you leave me alone for once, Abby?! I'm tired!" Violet shouted on her mind. She was lucky she was able to use their link before she said those words or else the kids and other member of the pack will hear them. As for Abby, she got taken aback from Violet's outburst. The latter was growling at her and her pupils were dilating too. The anger on her bestfriend was so obvious. But she felt more concern than hurt and scared on her. Abby knew that there was a problem. But she didn't knew it in the first place that it was this serious. Violet don't act like this when she had problems. Because since she became Alpha, she knew how to handle things and she can deal with it, extreme or not. But then, it's quiet unmanageable to her if it was something so personal. And it's obviously wasn't just something small. Because Violet got to shout at her and made her angry enough to shift. But then, it didn't made Abby leave. Other members will be frightened by that outburst and will instantly make them back out but not her. She wanted to know what the reason behind that anger. What are friends are for? Violet, on the other hand, immediately regretted it as soon as she realize what she did. She can't believe she said those words. When her Best friend just wanted to comfort her. She felt i***t. She stared at her hand. The one that was holding the glass earlier. It has small cuts and a small amount of blood can be seen but she didn't mind it though because it will heal itself eventually. She didn't dare to look at Abby. She knew she had hurt her emotionally and she's guilty about it. She took a deep breath and grabbed the bottle of wine and just drank straight from it instead. She wiped the remnants on her lips and placed the bottle on the table before she decided to speak. "I'm sorry." she muttered. Her voice was deep and barely audible it was more like a whisper but Abby heard it clearly. A minute had pass but Abby didn't said anything. So Violet turned to looked at her direction. And the ginger head was already looking at her. With a face that held annoyance, and more obviously, hurt. But Violet knew that behind all of that held empathy for her. "You're tired. But you chose to drink wine at six a.m in the morning instead of sleeping as soon as you got home?" Abby started. Her response was rather calm like nothing intense had happen. "Don't give me that excuse, Violet." She continued using their link. She huffed then crossed her arms. "Look, I saw you yesterday when you passed over the sensor. I'm still here sitting on your office when that happens. The alarmed goes on so I checked the monitor. I saw you running away pass the boundary and never came back. I thought you were just being yourself. " Abby said subtly rolling her eyes."Running pass those sensors you installed. Being a naughty one you used to be. But then I heard you." Violet knew she was referring to her howling yesterday. It was just normal for them but that one was quite something. And Abby felt it yesterday. "What happened, Vee? Tell me. I know you don't want to talk about it because you always preferred not to. And you don't want others to meddle with your problems. And I know it's also none of my business but believe me. You need to talk it out so it wouldn't bother you anymore. Don't just sit there and keep your mouth shut. We can talk about it. Just don't deal with it all by yourself. You had me. We always share our problems before, right? What's the exemption now? I don't care if you will get angry at me but I care for you so much." Violet didn't expect those words. She was expecting that Abby would just snap and tell her what an asshole she is, but instead, her bestfriend told her all of it. Abby's right. She had her. And she had no issues when she talks about with Abby before, but why now? Despite those words, Violet grew even more silent. She was contemplating with herself if she should tell Abby. Her inner wolf wanted to share the news but then her toxic mind says 'what for? It's not like I already accepted my fate. What's the purpose of telling her if I'll eventually reject my mate.' The shards of glass that was scattered on table caught her attention. She drag it one by one using her point finger and collect it all. Abby was watching her all through it and patiently waiting for her to talk. But she didn't. "Okay." Abby said after a long silence."We have the whole day. If you don't want to talk it now maybe we can talk about it later, or anytime y-" "I found her." Violet interrupted. Abby stop mid sentence and got confuse on what Violet had said. "I'm sorry what?" She said rapidly blinking her eyes. "I said I found her." Violet repeated. "I heard it you silly." Abby said giggling. She find it funny that Violet thought she didn't heard it. Did she forgets the fact that they are werewolves? Who can hear even a whisper in ten meters away."But I don't understand what you are talking about. You said you found her. Who's her?" Violet took a deep breath and turned to look at Abby. She was contemplating for a second but she still replied. " My mate." She said with a serious face. Her action tells she didn't like what she said but her inner self was feeling proud. Abby opened her mouth but closed it again." Your mate?" She said while raising one of her eyebrow." As in, your mate?" She continues while sticking her two point finger together. Showing it to the brunette. The latter rolled her eyes."Yes, my mate." "Oh?" The ginger head said trying to grasp the news. She's doubting if Violet was really saying the truth. Or she was just playing around to ease the tension. Knowing Violet, her Best friend, who sometimes in a situation like this was trying to change the topic or diverting the conversation to something to avoid the talking. And how would she believe that it was what troubling Violet's mind if it was actually a very good news. "Are you sure about that? Cause it doesn't look like a problem at all. It really is not a problem, Vee. It's actually a great news. A really great news for the whole pack. So you better not kidding me Violet." She continues. Violet groaned and massage her forehead with her hand. She wish she was just joking but she's not. "I'm not." Was all that she said. "Tell me the truth, Vee." She stop massaging her head and look up at her bestfriend who was looking at her with a stern face and crossing arms. Like a strict teacher that's waiting for her student to tell the correct answer. "What? Do I look like I'm joking? It's true." She replied to Abby's unsaid question. Her companion's facade still not wavering. She thought she still didn't believe her but then a smile started to form on Abby's face. She covers her mouth with both of her hands and squealed. "Oh my Gosh, Vee." She mumbles. She took away her hands and stood up. She quickly went to Violet and sat beside her. Violet flinched when Abby hug her tightly. She didn't expect that. Don't get her wrong, she don't really mind her Best friend hugging her. She's used to it. But since she became an Alpha, she rarely do accept such affectionate touch. And she hates drama. "I'm so happy for you!" Abby said when they untangled. She's smiling so brightly that it reach her eyes. "This is what you've been waiting for." 'No. This is what you've been waiting' Violet said in her thoughts. "You finally found your mate. This is the greatest news ever." She stood up and clap her hands giddily. "Let's call for a celebration. What do you think?" She said facing Violet as she puts her both hands on her hips. Her smile doesn't falter. "I should tell others." Violet glared at her when she said it. That's not a good idea at this moment. "No." Violet retaliated. "Don't worry. That will be my job. Just relax. Let me handle all preparations." She said not minding her best friend's look." I will make it extra special. I swear it will be the grandest celebration of all packs. The celebration of you finally meeting her." Violet was ready to disagree but Abby intervened. "Wait." She said while in deep thoughts. She stared at Violet with a deep creased on her forehead. "Did I heard it right? You said....her?" She asked. "Mm-mmm." Was Violet's reply. She nearly thought Abby wouldn't realize it beyond her good mood. "Are you bluffing?" Abby said, squinting her eyes. Placing both of her hands on her hips. Violet rolled her eyes and replied. "I wish I was." Abby thought for a while. Violet obviously hated the idea about the mate so there's a zero possibility that she would make fun of it. "So.... Your mate is a girl?" "A lady." Violet corrected her. Then suddenly a glimpse of her mate flash on her mind. Those angelic face. Those luscious lips. Those heavenly scent. "But. W-why?" Abby asked cutting off her daydreaming. Her best friend staring directly at her she just shrugged her shoulders as a reply. Abby opened her mouth then closed it again. Silence occupied the room for a minute. The ginger head was busy walking back and forth in front of an annoyed alpha. "So, It's a she." Abby said breaking the silence. She was staring particularly at nothing while thinking about it. Violet just nodded at her before she drank from the bottle. Abby slowly sat down beside Violet. "Wow. That was totally unexpected." She said laughing a bit. But still flabbergasted. She turned to looked at Violet with a wide grin plastered on her face. "Well, I'm still happy for you though. I don't really mind if your mate is a man or woman. I will still be glad even if she was a non living thing really. " Violet remained silent. But deep inside she was glad to hear it from her bestfriend. "Actually, if you thought about it. It's way much better." Abby continued and turned to face on her direction. "Come to think of it. We will be having a Luna instead of an Alpha." She said foolishly grinning. "And because your mate is a Luna, you will still be the Alpha. And you will still be leading us. Which is really great actually, cause honestly, being a Luna doesn't suit you. A fierce and grumpy werewolf like you should really be an alpha. That fits you." Violet took a sipped ignoring her bestfriend's comment. 'Finally, a moment of peace' she thought when Abby stopped talking. "Aha!" Abby exclaimed. The peace was cut short. "Maybe that was the reason why your mate is a girl. A lady rather. Cause you were destined to be an Alpha of our pack for the rest of your life. Well to be honest, I don't like anyone to replace you either. You're just perfect for us. Tsk, tsk. Destiny is wise. Just like me." She said while giggling her eyebrows. Her mate was a girl.'A lady'. Her mind corrected. She didn't even thought about it until now She didn't even expect that her mate would be a girl. Although she preferred to flirt and slept with women, heck she even fell in love once, she still thought she will ended up with a man someday. Because that's the way it is. She thought that her mate would replaced her position as an Alpha and then she will become the Luna. But maybe life has a different plan. Or that was what her inner wolf most desired. But then, she already agreed to herself a long time ago, that no matter what her life would be she would still accept her fate. Or maybe not. "Anyways, how did you two met?" Abby asked, so excited for the details. She leaned forward. Her chin rested on her hand. She was waiting for Violet's story like a noisy neighbor waiting for gossip. "I'd rather not tell you about it." Violet smile instantly faltered when she remembered what happened yesterday. The pretty face of her mate showed up to her mind. But she stand corrected of it. Her mate was not just pretty, she was gorgeous. Beyond gorgeous even. Those beautiful amber eyes was so captivating. She can't forget about it. And she also can't forget how scared her mate was in that very moment. She can hear the rapid beating of her heart. She can smell and felt her fear. She was terrified to the creature in front of her. And that was one of the reasons why Violet should forget about her and reject her if needed. Even if it was the hardest and most stupid decision she will ever made. Because how can that girl love her if she was afraid of what Violet truly was. How can she accept her? And how can Violet assured herself that her mate could be trusted if she knew about her kind. She already gave her trust to someone before, but that someone betrayed her. And that someone is a human. Violet felt chills on remembering it. Her blood boiled as the face of an old friend yet greatest enemy came to her mind. "Why not?" Abby said in a frown. Curious at her bestfriend's response. Violet pushed the memory away and drank from her already half empty bottle of wine before she talked. "It's a long story." "A long story." Abby repeated her words while nodding her head. "I love long stories by the way. So I don't mind." Abby was obviously fascinated about her lovelife. How could she not ? It's what they both been waiting for. It's what the whole pack has been waiting for. Their Aplha's mate. Violet would really want to tell Abby all the details of their encounter if not just for the only one thing that stopping her from doing so. The fact that her mate is a human. She was torn. In following her mate and know where she lived and all about her and about refusing from doing so. Because if she did those, she will just continued craving for her more and more to the point that she cannot stop herself. And that was what she dreaded to happen. So she needed to keep away from her. But how can she if the feelings were too strong? She only met her once, but she felt like she was already connected to her. 'f**k this mate issues'. She said on her mind. "So, are you gonna tell me now or what?" Abby said pulling her out to her mind. She was annoyed waiting for Violet to speak. "Stop it, Abby. There's no point in talking about it because I will not be mated with her." she said with a finality to her voice then stood up leaving her bottle of wine and walked to the door. "What?! Are you crazy, Vee?" Abby said. Both confused and angry about her bestfriend words and sudden decision. "W-why is that? Was she ugly, or fat, or a total nuts?" "No." "Then what?" Violet stopped mid track grasping the door knob. She tightly closed her eyes and open it again. "She's a human." She muttered. It made Abby gone silent and they both know why. Violet turned the knob when she doesn't get a reply to her bestfriend. She got out to the hallway and as soon she closed it, she was greeted by the portrait of her late father that hanged at the wall. And that's when the last memory with him came to her mind again.
