Chapter 4: The unexpected

Violet knew her bestfriend were approaching to her office. But she still got flinched when Abby opened the door and closed it forcefully creating a vibration to the wall. The ginger head woman was obviously fuming. "Argh! I can't believe he chose to go to work than to spend the rest of the day with us!" She said as soon she walked away from the door. She was wearing a black plait skirt and beige sleeveless blouse. Her three inches heels were creating an annoying noise on the floor as she paced back and forth in front of unamused Violet. "Please don't tell me you came here to rant." Violet grunted while fixing the papers she was reading a while ago. She hasn't finished it yet but decided to do it later when there is no angry she wolf lingering on her office. Violet's office was wide as two room combined. It was formerly a library. But when her father died and she inherited their business, she turned it into an office of her own because she don't want to use her father's old office on the first floor. Others thought she's being sentimental, but the truth is, she just wanted to leave it as it is. "I asked him just one day. Just one day Vee. He said yes, yeah. But just one call from his boss, then poof! he's gone." Abby practically growling as her anger arises. "That was an emergency, Abby. There's someone who needed his help." Violet calmly replied. She did heard Emett and his boss conversation earlier when he called. "And besides, he always spent the rest of his day with you and Sophia. Everyday. He's just working part time, you know." Violet unbuttoned the second button of her white longsleeve. Enough for her to breath even more. She can't pinned what it is that made her agitated nowadays, but she does know that stress was one of it. "Yeah I know that." Abby stopped pacing and sat on the black sofa. It strangely has a soft cushion, very soft that it feels like you were sitting on a clouds. "But it's not enough. Why can't he just work at your company instead?" "Abby, he's a surgeon. Not a viticulturist." Violet scoffed. Violet actually runs a wine company. Her family's legacy that founded by her great grandfather, Marcus Renaldi Adams. That was passed in generations to the family's eldest child. Violet wished she had siblings, so they'll be the one who will managed it and she can do whatever she wants. But she's unlucky though, because she's the only child. But then, she was still happy about it, because it can help her provide the packs needs. And being the richest person in town, it helps her to protect them. "You know how he love his profession, right? He was so passionate in it. Hell, he even preffered being a surgeon than being a beta. But because he's a good man, he did both. And his doing his best to manage his time for his work, for this pack and for you and Sophia. You should be proud of him." Violet's long speech made Abby felt guilty. When she didn't respond, Violet stood up from the chair and made her way to the bar. Her dark gray fitted trousers showed her nicely shaped body as she walked. She picked the bottle of wine at the corner. One of her father's favorite and pour some on her wine glass. "I do Violet. I really do. But." Abby said after a while. Violet turned to her and leaned at the bar table and sipped from the glass waiting for her to continue, but she just took a deep breath and folded her arms looking like a distress. "Your s*x life isn't as good as before?" Violet said after a sip, wearing a sexy smirked that could swoon a thousand men, even women. But for Abby, it was so annoying. "No. Were still good at it." She said glaring at her bestfriend. "It's just that-" "You misses him every damn hour. That was so sickening." Violet finished her sentence with a rolled eyes. Abby raised her eyebrow looking warily at Violet. "Envy much?" she said mockingly. "You wish." Violet replied and carried the glass along with the bottle of wine back to her office table. She sat on her chair gracefully taking a long sipped of her wine as she do so. She run a hand to her hair before she looked at Abby . "Spending every seconds of my life looking at the face of that one person everyday is the last thing I want." "Not if that person is your mate. That would be the most amazing thing you would ever wanted." Abby said contradicting her Alpha's words. And it brought an oddly feeling deep inside Violet that she can't comprehend. Especially at the mention of the word mate. "How was the kids training by the way? Any progress?" she said, subtly changing the topic. She hates that the conversation suddenly turned to her. "I'd say they're doing great. Improving just a little, but it is everyday." Abby said looking menacingly at Violet. "How about you? Any progress?" Violet knew what her companion was talking about but she just acted like she doesn't know. "What are you talking about?" she said. Abby just laughed at her. Amused by her bestfriend's in denial state. "Oh don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about." Violet avoided her gaze and just poured some wine on her glass and took a sip. She took a deep breath before she spoke again. "We both know that I have more important things to do than this, Abby. I don't want to waste my time finding my so called mate." Abby raised her eyebrow when Violet used their link instead of answering her directly. It was one of their abilities. Sharing their thoughts to one another so no one can hear them except themselves. "I didn't said you'll find your mate. I was saying you'll find someone that you could be mated with." Abby replied also using the link. Humans would think they are crazy. Staring at each other not saying a word. "I will look like a desperate one if I follow that idea of yours. And to tell you what, there isn't." Violet poured more wine on her glass. She really hated this. It just made her more agitated. She stood from the table and walked to the massive floor to ceiling window of her office. The view from here was breathtaking. From the wide forest to the high mountains. Violet was a sucker for this. Growing up, nature was her friend, aside from Abby and Emett. She always took a run to the woods with her friends, sometimes with her father, but mostly just by herself. Every bit of nature gave her peace. From the sound of birds chirping, the gush of winds, the swaying of the branches of trees and even the sound of dried leaves. It all made her calm. She would never get tired about it. She even thought it was actually the forest who help her too lose her temper when she was turning. "I bet there is." Abby said after a long silence. Not using the link anymore. And Violet nearly forget about the conversation. "I think you just don't want to tied on that person maybe because he was already mated or his just worth for spending a 'not intimate moments'. You know, the one who helps you survive the heat cycles?" Violet nearly laugh at the word 'he'. Abby already knew about her private business but she clearly doesn't know that the one they were talking about was actually a woman. A long time friend , with benefits, of Violet from the other pack. She had a fair share of history of flirting with men before but it never got more than that. They like to be the one who's in control. Even in a simple coversation. And Violet hated it. She wanted to be the dominant one. And she always get it in having s*x with women. She's the one who's in control and she likes it very much. How they scream her name brought a great satisfaction to her. She felt like she's powerful. An alpha indeed. The heat from Violet's body arises from the thought of it. She's aroused. In times like this, she uses a link to communicate her so called friend. And have their business elsewhere. But unluckily for her, her friend was nowhere to be found. She last saw her maybe two weeks ago. 'f*****g hormones.' she thought. Violet emptied her glass and took a deep breath before she turned and faced Abby . "Don't talk." Abby suddenly said before she can open her mouth to say. "Ugh. I can literally smell you." She continued with a disgusted face. Violet blushes because of it. If she stay here, her bestfriend would just mocked her about it. "Whatever." she muttered before she placed her empty glass to the small table beside the window and walked to the door. "Where are you going?" Abby asked her as she opened the door. "I'll go for a run" Violet replied then closes it. She silently walked through the main hallway where there were many different doors that held different rooms. This mansion has a thirty seven rooms. Kitchen, offices, library, dining and living rooms are not included. Other member of the pack would still be lost in here sometimes but not Violet. She knew every corner of the mansion. When she got to the grand stairs, she was greeted by Lori. One of the orphan wolf she took care of about 4 years ago. Together with her two younger siblings, Zoe and Aiden. "Good morning Miss Violet." she said, merely smiling. She was carrying a pile of thick books on her arms. Others, especially humans, would think it was so heavy for her petite frame. Violet just nod at her and continued. As soon as she was at the first floor she turned and walked her way to the back hall of the mansion. Every afternoon, it is usually quiet in her home because adults were busy on their jobs and the kids were playing outside. After about three minutes, she finally reached the back door. The sunlight greeted her when she opened it. For werewolves, they love to spend their time under the sun. So most of them were tan, in contrast of Violet. Oddly, she has creamy white skin that you would think she haven't spend a second outside. But the truth is, she always went for a run at the forest. But not with the sun that was high up in the sky. She always preferred to go out when it was nearly sunset. Or every night and or when it rains. This area was directed to the forest. Her family didn't bother to put a fence or barrier, because for them, forest was like a home too. Violet took off her black heels and walk away to the forest. She then took off her clothes one by one as soon as she got to the trees leaving her bare naked. She folded them and placed it on the flat surface of a big rock and run. She changed her form. The long and delicate fingers turned into a big paws. Her slim figure turned into a huge one with a brown fur all over. Her teeth turned into a dangerous fangs and the color of her eyes remains, but with a different shades of her greyish blue irises. Which got even brighter. She run faster deep into the forest. She wanted to get rid of her arousal and the adrenaline rush were helping. Violet stop for a moment and looked up at the mountains. Her father used to take her there before, every weekend. They will go there before the sun rises and go back home when the sun was down. She ignored those memories and continued to run. The arousal was slowly going off but the agitation was still there. She turned her head left and right as she runs. She really doesn't have a particular place to go she just wanted to get rid of it. With a growl, she turned to the right. This part of the forest led to a road where there are some houses. Violet place some sensor on every selected trees to know if there are humans or even wolves that passed on their line of property. She prohibited the pack to go here when they took their form because humans might see them. That was one of her rule. But for an undefined reason, she took this path, breaking her own rule. She can heard the sound of the cars from the road and even the voices of human driving on it. Indicating that she was near to the road. But what picked her attention the most was the crying of a wolf pup. Yet, she ignored it. She knew it was just on it's changing phase and it's not also from her pack so it's not her responsibility to care of. 'Hey! Calm down doggy.' Violet stop when she heard it. Her ears perked and focused on it. Based from the smell, it was a human. And strangely, she like that smell. 'This wouldn't hurt.' she heard it says again. Then followed by a sound of a broken branches and a cry from the same wolf pup she heard a while ago. Violet got alerted. She didn't waste a time and run as fast as she can to them. She even run pass to one of the sensor which the light turn red. But she ignored it. If what she was thinking was right, she would not hesitate to bury her fangs to that human's neck. ******** The park was loaded with people when Skye came to town center. She didn't expected that it will be this crowded in this town that has no more than a hundred thousand population. But yet, it was sunday afternoon. No classes for kids and maybe a day off for the adults so Skye can't blame them if they wanted to enjoy their weekends outside than rest all day on their homes. That was so boring for her. Infact, the reason she went here was because there was nothing to do at Maddison's house anyway. And her sister went for a date with Levi so she had no one to annoyed with. She started the engine of her motorbike and went back to the road. She ignored her previous plan to have a walk at the park and just decided to roam around the town instead. Besides, she still have two hours all for herself before Maddison got home and call her for dinner. She turned to the right lane. This part of the town had more shops. She ride on a slow pace even though they were only few cars on the road. She scanned every shop and stopped at the side of the road when she saw the coffee shop that Maddison always mentioned about. Skye often drink coffee because she always get palpitations from it. But because she's stubborn sometimes she's still drinking. She even already have a doze of it a while ago before she came here. And she thought that drinking some more wouldn't be harmed. She parked the bike and turned off the engine. She took off her helmet then eventually checked the fuel. The thin red line was nearly pointing at the big letter E. Indicating that the gas was almost empty. "Fuck." she muttered as she got down and took a deep breath. "Don't worry Uno, I'll feed you." She said as she tap it and glanced at the coffee shop. "But just hang up for a bit, okay? I'll just go get some energizer first." She walked her way to the shop fixing her leather jacket but then someone suddenly got bumped to her. She stumbled a little but didn't fall off. She touched her right shoulder and cursed. She turned to looked at the one who bumped her wanting to yell at their face because it was f*****g hurts. But it was just a kid. Who stumbled on the ground. "Hey are you alright?" Skye get to him and touched his shoulder. He flinched and stared at her. And Skye was shocked when he saw his face. She knew him. He was the frowning boy from Levi's residence. But what shocked her the most was his eyes. The color of it and the size of pupil was somehow different. The boy was also shocked seeing her. He was shaken and sweating. He stood up fast and run leaving his bag. "Hey!" Skye shouted at him. She grab the blue faded bag on the ground. "You left your bag!". The boy ignored her and run to the sidewalk. He stop to get his bike that was parked and ride it. "Hey! Wait!" Skye shouted again but he still didn't stop. "Really huh?" she wore the helmet and secure the bag. "Okay Uno. I think it's time for a race." She started the engine and go. She followed the boy who was frantically riding the bike. He almost got hit by a car when he took a turn but he avoided it. He pedaled faster when they leave the town center. Skye was shocked at how fast he is. Her Uno can't even keep up on him even it was one of the fastest motorbike on the whole world. She took more speed. The kid maybe heard or sense it because he got even more faster. He didn't even got slower even though there's two cars heading on their way on the other side of the road. Skye got nervous when the kid didn't stop when the first heading car got near. There was no other way because there's also a car ahead of them. But the kid stubbornly skidded between the two cars and turn right when he got out avoiding the second car. The car that was ahead of them suddenly stop because of it. And Skye hurriedly turn her brakes. She cursed because she nearly hit the back of the car. 'I swear when I got him. I'm gonna take that kid to his home and tell his parents he needed a lesson.' she said to her mind. She started again when the car goes off. The kid was far ahead now. So Skye turn to full speed. Maddison will get mad at her if she knew this. The kid turn to the left entering the woods. Skye cursed again but still follow him instead. She stop for a second and take a look at the path he took. It was narrow but her motorbike can go there. She turned and followed the path. Her wheels were stepping on some branches as she goes. After a three minutes of following. Skye turn off the engine when she found the bike. It was on the ground and the rider was nowhere to be found. "Great. Racing turns into hide and seek now. " Skye said as she took off her helmet and got down. She carefully placed it to the motorbike and took off the bag on her back. "Where are you?!" she shouted but there was no response. "I'm not here to hurt you okay? Look, you left your bag. I just want to give it back to you." Skye looked around waiting for the kid to show up but still nothing. She took a deep breath and speak again. "Okay kid. Don't make this hard for me. I promise I won't yell at you or anything for bumping into me. Even if it was so f*****g hurts." After a minute of silence, Skye lose hope and thought that maybe the kid has really no chance to show up. She ran a hand to her hair and took a deep breath. "Okay frown boy. I guess you don't have a plan to get this. Or maybe you already ran away." Skye step back and decided to ride back to the town instead. "I guess I'll just give to Levi then. You're in the same neighborhood afterall." "Oh fuck." Skye closed her eyes and laugh a bit. "Why didn't I think about it earlier? Levi knows you and where you live. Oh gosh, I just wasted my time for this." She was getting ready to wear the helmet and ride on when she suddenly heard something. It was a sound of a broken branch then followed by a cry. She stop to listen to it again. And there it is. Another cry. She thought it came from the small creek that was ten meters north. With a sigh, she followed the noise. The nearer she got the louder the noise is. She stopped on a big rock. The sound came there. But there was a big fallen tree unto it so she can't she whats behind. She walked to the side and around. She got down to the creek. On there, she saw a wolf. Trap under the big fallen tree. It has so many branches surrounding below it that makes it look like a hiding place. But the opening was narrow. Skye knew that wolves are dangerous but this one doesn't look like it. It was looking at her like she's the one that was dangerous. She can be naive sometimes, but she knows this little fella was afraid. "Hey there buddy. What happen to you?" she step closer to the wolf. But when she did, it started to get frantic. Skye got shocked a little. She thought it was gonna lunge at her but then it didn't. It keeps moving frantically and it suddenly cries. Skye saw that one of it's paw was stock on a two overlapping thick branches. It was trying to get it out but then there was another branch beside it. That one had sharp point cutting the wolf's leg as it move. Stopping it to free it's leg. "Oh boy. You're hurt." Skye step closer to it and it move again. Making the branch to cut it's leg even more. "Hey. Calm down. You're wound will get bigger if you move." Skye step slowly, closer to it. But it was still trying to get out. "I know you're afraid, but don't be. I will help you okay?" She calmly said. And to her surprise, the wolf stop moving, staring at her warily. Skye thought it can actually understand her. "That's good. But promise me you'll not gonna bite me. Is that okay for you, doggy?" she asked then laugh to herself. She doesn't know what was more funny about what she said. Is it wanting the wolf to promise her or from calling it a doggy. "Well let me see that." Skye kneeled and took a look at it and was hesitated to touch it at first but then the wolf never did tried to move again. The sharp branch was so thick to brake it with just her hands. She can't even pull it back because of the big rock. "Okay. This will be easy if I just have a knife." Skye sighed and thought about how to break the branch. She then remember the kid's bag. Maybe it has something that can help. "Just wait a minute doggy. I'll be right back." Skye stood up and ran back to her motorbike and took the bag. She carried it back to the creek and knelt, not minding her jeans to get dirty. "Let's see if I can find something here." She opened the bag and rummaged through it. Inside were all the kids clothes and a tumbler. There was nothing helpful in it. Skye even flipped it and pour all it's content hoping to find something but there's still nothing. She took a deep breath and think again. She was determined to help the wolf to get out. She was not really an animal lover but she always tend to help someone who was in need. May it be a person or animal. She looked around trying to find something. The flat stone on the side catches her attention. It was so flat that it looked like it had sharp edges. She grab it and take a look at it. The edges were not nearly as sharp as the knife but it can help. "Okay doggy. Here's what we gonna do. You stay still there and I will try to cut it. Just don't bite me okay?" she said after a sighed. She held the branch and cut it off with the flat stone. She was glad it was working. But not enough to brake it. The wolf got alerted when Skye move her hands to the sharp point of the branch. "It's okay. I'm just gonna hold it so it won't hurt you more while I cut this one." she said while furiosly cutting the branch while her other hands were already stained with the wolf's blood. She just continued what she was doing and stop when the cut was nearly half. "I think I can break this now." She put the stone down and hold the other side of the branch. She tried to break it carefully so it won't hurt the wolf but it's not enough. She needed to give all her strength to break it. The wolf started to cry again when Skye tried to pull it to her direction. "Hey! calm down doggy." she cooed it but it started to get hesterical. Skye took a deep breath and decided to pull it with all her force to break it before this wolf bit her. "This wouldn't hurt." With one last pull she broke the branch. She stumbled and fell on her butt. She laugh to her success but it ends quickly when the wolf cried harder. The sharp point of the branch cut it's leg a little more when she pulled it. It frantically moved again and without the branch that was cutting it's leg, it got out on it's own and it ran away from her, slightly limping. "Hey wait!" she stood up and followed the wounded wolf. She doesn't want to let it free when it's wound was still opened. She ran faster to keep up to the wolf but then she suddenly heard a growl ahead of them. In an instant, a huge brown thing suddenly jump in front of her stopping her from her tracks. She stumbled back and fell. Skye can't believe what she was seeing now. Hovering in front of her was a wolf. Bigger than the one she helped. It was huge and scary. It snarled at her. It's fangs looked like sharper than a knife and it has large jaws that were enough to cut off her head in one bite. It's eyes were bright but the intensity of anger on it was visible. And it was directed to her. Skye was shocked and afraid. So afraid that she can't even move, shout or ran away to save her life. This animal was beyond normal for her, it's not just a normal wolf, it was like a monster. That can surely end her life in one snap if she won't defend herself. She's breathing heavily and she started to panic but her mind was totally empty. She wanted to shout for help and ran but she can't. She's glued sitting there with wide eyes. She's never been this afraid before. The monstrous animal was staring at her. Skye didn't dared to closed her eyes or even blink. Afraid to be devoured by this monster if she dared to. 'Is this the end of me?' she thought. Then Maddison came to her mind. She don't want to leave her sister. 'Oh god. Please no'. The animal snarled at her again. And that's when Skye closed her eyes and shielding her arms. Embracing herself for what will happen. But then it never came. She kept her eyes closed and tried to listen to the surrounding. There's no growling anymore, the forest became totally silent. Her fast heartbeat could only be heard. She opened her eyes bravely and looked around. The huge animal was gone. A tear fell from her eyes and she wiped it. It was so close to end her life and she was really scared. That thing nearly killed her. When the thought of killing cross her mind, Skye came to her senses. And that's where the panic sets in. She abruptly stood up and ran as fast as she can back to her bike, afraid for the creature to come back. Her body was shaking uncontrollably. She jumped when she heard the howling from afar. She dropped her helmet because of it and then quickly started the engine leaving her belonging. She ride fast. Hurrying to get out in the woods. Her heart was hammering hard to her chest. The effect of the coffee she drank earlier kicks in and added to her nervousness. She don't know what was that thing that she encountered. She doesn't even know what to tell Maddison because it was so unbelievable. What she could only think as of now is to get out of here and go home.
