Chapter 5

SONIA POV “Mommy... Mommy... Nana said we were going to a party. Is that true?” Ethan asked, his forehead creased. I caressed his tender face and kissed his cheek. “ It's not a party son, it's an art exhibition auction, and you're coming with me.” Ethan yelped in excitement. He reminded me of his father in every way as he pouted his lips, just like Jason’s cupid red lips. ‘Get a hold of yourself, Sonia. I muttered to myself. Why was I thinking of him more often? The thoughts were brewing in my mind. “Madam, the chauffeur is ready.” One of my guards came. It was a hectic day for me at the office as I had lots of interviews, and a truckload of antique art had been shipped in. I had to observe everything myself, giving no room for incompetence. It was all glitz and glamor at the auction which was held at the Castilago Hotel. Beautiful lights filled the skies as guests, art collectors, and reporters from all walks of life swarmed the place. I made my way to the podium, giving the opening speech before handing it over to the coordinator for the night. The bidding bell rang, and the crowd went agog. I smiled at the sight of placards being hoisted, a sign of interest as they battled for the best art. “I'll be back, honey. Mommy needs to use the ladies' room” I kissed Ethan’s hair before leaving, and he smiled and nodded. I quickly dabbed my face with a light markup as I made my way out of the restroom and back to the auction room. I was abruptly yanked from behind. “What the hell?” my face drained of emotion as I saw who the stranger was. My heart was pulsating rapidly. “I made a mistake before, and I'm here to make amends, Sonia. Five years has been enough for me to learn my lessons, baby. I need you back in my life. I will do anything.” He sounded hopeless and unkempt. The contour of his face was etched with regret. I stood there and gasped. A myriad of thoughts raced through my mind.“ How did you find me, Jason?” I growled at him. “I saw you on the news. That's how I got information about the auction and how to trace you.” Jason replied, “ I missed you baby. Please come back home,” he added. “You've got a lot of nerves showing your face here Jason, after all these years?” I bellowed. “You chased me out of our matrimonial home without considering the fact that I had nowhere else to go and I was pregnant. You brought another woman into our home to spite me, and now you expect everything to go away? No Jason!! You don't get to dictate for me.” “Baby, Alina deceived me. The pregnancy she pinned on me wasn't mine. She only came back after discovering the will was in my favor. I was too naive to read between the lines. Now I know Sonia, that you're truly the one for me. I'll do anything to have you and our son come back home” I felt a pang in my heart as he mentioned, “son.” My gaze furrowed at him, shooting him daggers. “ You don't have a son, Jason. You don't deserve to be in our lives any more. That opportunity is long gone.” I smirked at him. “Please, Sonia, I'll do anything,” he said, going down on his knees. I could see beads of tears building up in his eyes. Don't pity him, Sonia! He did you dirty!! He hurt your emotions and left you out in the cold to suffer! While he lay with Alina. I mustered all the strength in me and pushed him to the side as I ran back to the room where the auction was being held, and hot tears cascaded down my cheek. I couldn't let Ethan see me like this, So I ran outside. Crying my eyes out as I screamed into the void, and I clenched my chest in pain. Why now? Why did he come back after throwing me under the bus, not caring if I survived or died? Why now that I'm contented and stable? After all my achievement? I said to myself. I had to stay strong. I was fooled once. I wasn't willing to let my guard down this time. I dabbed my face with new make-up. I summoned courage and went back into the auction hall. It was almost time for the closing speech. And I was invited to the podium once again. “I want to thank everyone who made time to join us in today's auction. I'm truly humbled and honored. 50% of the proceeds from this auction today will be sent to war-torn countries as humanitarian aid. We look forward to hosting an even bigger auction event next summer. Thank you all, and have a good night.” I said. Before I could drop the microphone, a loud voice came from a section of the crowd. “That’s my wife up there. She can't keep me from my son.” I gulped, squinting into the crowd. The crowd went into a frenzy as all attention spun to Jason’s direction. The cameras, journalists, and news reporters all wanted to hear what he had to say. “Madam, we have to leave now.” My bodyguard instructed, motioning me towards the Rolls Royce Cullinan that was packed outside. “Who was that Mommy? Was it Daddy?” Ethan asked as he fiddled with the edge of his suit. I felt my heart sink to my stomach. I tried to reply him, but I couldn't. I felt a lump in my throat as I tried to speak. My gaze met with the driver as he quickly reverted his gaze. “Not now, son. Let's discuss this when we get home okay.” I smiled, playing with his hair. “ Is everything okay, Madam Sonia?” Mrs. Martha asked. Her tone was laced with concern. “ It's nothing to worry about, Martha.” Jason’s presence in Los Angeles spelt doom, a reminder of the life I had left behind. One that I swore never to remember or go back to.
