“So, tell me and I am being serious right now…what is going on between you and Jason?” Jess had taken the opportunity to ask the one thing I had been hoping she wouldn’t, and I suddenly wished that my father and Jason would return.
“What do you mean?” I asked as I tried my best to act innocent.
“On and off again, boyfriend and girlfriend is what I mean…” Jess raised an eyebrow, and I knew there wasn’t going to be an easy out for me. Jess and Jason had been close long before I came along, and I knew she was worried about our on and off-again relationship.
“It's complicated,” I admitted before I rolled onto my back and stared up at the ceiling.
“Is it because of Seff?” she then asked, and I sighed loudly.
“You and I both know that Seff is off-limits,” I reminded her. “I like Jason and the only reason we do the whole on and off thing is because of him,” admitting the truth to my best friend wasn’t easy and, although Jason and I had discussed our relationship before, he only had one request and that was that I kept his secret.
“What do you mean it's because of him?” I knew she was going to ask, and I knew that even if I begged her not to say anything to Jason, she would.
“Look, he swore me to secrecy,”
“What? How…why…I mean…what?” I glanced over at her as she now sat crossed-legged on the opposite bed, and I knew that this was a bad idea.
“I know you and him are super close, but it wasn’t as if he told me the secret…I may have figured it out and confronted him about it and even though he tried to deny it…he ended up telling me the truth,” the fact of the matter is, as much as Jason and I like each other and we hang out and make out quite a bit, the truth is, I have a major crush on someone else and so does he. We basically ended up using each other out of frustration. I wasn’t a fool though; Jason and I are more than simply friends. We do like each other, but the feelings we have for other people are exactly why we have our ‘off’ time.
“Ok, I feel like you are explaining it, but I also feel like you are being extremely vague about this,” Jess looked torn up and I knew I could put an end to her curiosity, but I wouldn’t do that to Jason. However, the main reason I had brought them both here wasn’t just for my own sanity.
“Leave it,” I demanded as I sat up and faced her. “I won’t break my promise to him,”
“Yeah, but now that I know something is up, I want to know!” Jess whined as she hopped off the bed and joined me on mine. “Come on Robin, is he gay?” my eyes went wide, and I tried my hardest not to burst out laughing as that was very much far from the truth. “Does he have a crush on one of his soccer buddies?” I couldn’t help it as I burst out laughing and Jess looked uncomfortable for a moment before she smiled. “Ok, yeah…stupid thing to say,”
“Jason is not gay, definitely not gay and no, he doesn’t have some crush on any of his soccer buddies,” I tilted my head to the side as I studied her. “Why would you even think that?” I then asked.
“No, I mean… it's nothing…I don’t know,” Jessica’s unusual behavior made something inside me click and I snapped my fingers as one and one became two.
“You like him!” it wasn’t a question; it was a realization, and I slapped my forehead for being stupid.
“Oh no, no, no, no!” Jess jumped off the bed and when she started to fidget with her black tank top, I knew I was right. This was perfect.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“There is nothing to tell!” judging by the squeakiness of her voice, I knew she was now just trying to cover it up. “Besides, I would never do that to you…” her voice trailed off as she finally met my eyes and then she cast her eyes down. “Ok…yeah…I do,”
“Jess, why didn’t you tell me,” I asked again, but this time there was no teasing in my voice.
“Before you, I always thought we would end up together, you know? But when you came along, his attention shifted from me to you and I thought…maybe it's for the best, you know?” Jessica looked absolutely defeated and I was now dying to tell her that Jason felt the same way.
“Well, are you going to tell him?”
“What?! No!” the panicked look had returned, and I did my best not to smile.
“Why not?” I couldn’t help but be a bit pushy. I mean, if Jessica did say something to him, then this whole thing could finally be over.
“You and him are well…right now you two are ‘on’ right? So that would be totally wrong of me,” I kept my mouth shut as I watched my best friend try to calm down. I wanted to say something, but I also didn’t want to break my promise. However, Jess hadn’t begged me to keep her secret and when I heard voices coming from down below, I knew that I had to get away from Jessica as quickly as possible.
“Food!” I yelled as I jumped off the bed and headed downstairs. Jess was hot on my heels, and I knew I didn’t have a lot of time, otherwise, she would swear me to secrecy. Luckily, Jason was already headed inside with my father right behind him. I was even more grateful when my father sat down on the barstool by the island instead of going into the sitting room. Eating in the kitchen meant Jess wouldn’t have an opportunity to say anything. I opened the pizza boxes that line the island, and I immediately grabbed a slice with pepperoni. “Hmm, so good,” I mumbled between bites. I didn’t pay much attention as my father started talking about making a fire out on the beach at some point during our summer break, as my mind was focused on the task I had ahead. I had to talk to Jason. Alone. I suddenly wished I had already transitioned because then I could get my father involved and ask him for help. However, I had another idea as I grabbed another slice. I slipped my phone out of my pocket and sent Jason a quick text. I was extremely lucky tonight because his phone had to be on vibrate and Jessica was too busy discussing the picnic idea with my father.
✉Robin: I have to talk to you
✉Jason: I’m right here?
I read his response and I wanted to hit him over the head as he looked over at me and I made a gesture with my head toward Jess, and he frowned.
✉Jason: What is going on?
I didn’t want to do this over text, but at this point, I could almost feel Jessica’s need to get me alone even though she was talking to my father. This was my only chance.
✉Robin: Jess has a major crush on you?
As soon as he read the message he started choking and my eyes went wide as I watched my father hop off his stool to help Jason. After a lot of coughing, Jason seemed to get a hold of himself.
“Are you alright?” my father asked as he rubbed Jason’s back. Jessica had poured him a glass of water, which he was slowly sipping on.
“Yeah…ahem…it went down wrong,” he muttered, and he looked adorable with his pink ears and cute smile. Jason is hot. Dark hair, dark eyes, and a killer smile. Of course, his passion for soccer meant he was quite fit. We continued to eat, albeit slowly, and Jessica was the first one to finish.
“I’m going to take a shower,” she announced, and I internally groaned at that. When I made no move and tried to avoid eye contact, she huffed out loudly before storming out of the kitchen.
“What is that all about?” my father asked. He is a warrior and there was no way he missed out on that.
“It's her way of telling me she wants to talk,” I admitted as I avoided Jason’s stare.
“Huh? Her going to shower is code for wanting to talk?” my father asked, and I nodded.
“Yeah…don’t think about it too hard, dad,” he chuckled as he stood up and started cleaning up and this was my chance as I leaned on the island and looked at Jason. “Go and talk to her!” I hissed out but Jason quickly shook his head. “Why not?”
“Did you tell her?” he then asked, and I rolled my eyes.
“Nope…she was asking about us and it suddenly hit me…so I did the same thing to her that I did to you,” I admitted, and when Jason smiled, I knew that this was going to be a good thing. “Go!”
“What if she really went to shower?” he asked and I tried to listen, but my hearing wasn’t that good, not yet anyway. Of course, it was a lot better than the average human, but I couldn’t be sure.
“She hasn’t yet,” my father whispered, and Jason’s whole face went a light shade of pink. So cute!
“Go, go, go, before she gets in the shower,” I watched as he threw down the piece of pizza he had been nibbling on and made a mad dash up the spiral staircase.
“So…what is going on?” I had been expecting the question, so I turned to my father and smiled.
“They both like each other but they’ve been keeping it a secret from each other,” I informed him but when he frowned, I knew my explanation wasn’t good enough. “Jason and I do like each other…but we’ve basically been using our relationship to keep ourselves from getting hurt,” I knew that by saying this, I was admitting to my father that I was interested in someone and when he gave me a look, I knew what he was thinking. “Don’t worry, dad, I’m not going to suddenly lose my virginity to Seff,” as soon as his name left my lips, I slapped my hand over my mouth.
“What?” for the first time in what probably felt like forever, my father looked completely shocked.
“Are you surprised that I’m still a virgin or that I like Seff?” now that it was out there, I didn’t think it would be necessary for me to hide it or pretend that I didn’t admit to having a crush on the Alpha to be.
“Both,” he admitted, and I felt myself relax. “I’m happy to hear that your still…well, you know but honey, Seff?”
“Yeah, I know,” everyone knew about his serious relationship with Jena from The Hillside Pack, and I was no fool. I had seen them sneak off to who knows where and I was not delusional about how everyone hoped they would be mated together. Especially since I am pretty sure they have already slept together. “Jason has been my cover, dad, and yeah, we make out sometimes, but honestly, it's just a way for us to be distracted…even just for a little while,” the truth hurt but as my father and I sat on the couch and put on a movie, I was happy to see my two best friends enter the sitting room holding hands. Jess immediately took the spot next to me and leaned in close.
“Are you sure you are ok with this?” she whispered, and I nodded as I grabbed her hand.
“It took long enough,” I teased, and she squeezed my hand in response before we all relaxed and watched the movie.
