« Robin » “You told your dad?!” Jess was in shock, and I couldn’t blame her. “How did he take it?” Jason asked as he leaned back against the white headboard of Jessica’s temporary bed. It was so cute how quickly they had moved from being close friends to being a couple. “I think he was more relieved to hear that I am still a virgin,” I said with a shrug. “Then again…I think he may use this to get me to open up and fix our issues,” “Nah, he wouldn’t do that to you…” Jason was trying. I knew he was, but I suddenly wasn’t feeling all that good about my father knowing I had a crush on Seff. “Here’s the thing…we all pretty much hope Seff and Jena are going to end up being mates – except me, of course,” cue eye roll. “And I know that’s why I have to stop obsessing over him,” it was the truth. Those two fit so well together that I had no doubt they were mates. “Another reason why this vacation is perfect,” “Why do you say that?” Jess asked as she leaned against Jason. Perfect couple. “He’ll be transitioning soon…and if I remember correctly, Jena should be too,” silence filled the room as the three of us got lost in our own thoughts. For me, it was the realization that if Seff and Jena were mates, then Jena would leave her pack to join ours and that would mean…well, that would be torture for me. Even worse than it has been over the last two years or so. “I still don’t get what you see in him,” Jason suddenly remarked, and Jess’s whole body tensed up. Even I could hear the jealousy in his voice - or was it simply curiosity? “I know what you guys think of him,” and I did. Neither one of them had anything good to say about Seff. “He is always late for school,” Jess reminded me, and I knew this was going to turn into them listing all the reasons why Seff is an asshole. “He walks around like he owns the school,” “He hardly talks and when he does, he makes it worse by silently demanding everyone to fawn all over whatever dumb s**t comes out of his mouth,” “He has no problem hiding that him and Jena obviously fu…have s*x,” “He ignores you pretty much all the time,” “He and his dumb friends have no problem talking about you like you are the worst person in the world,” “Ok…ok…he is late because his father demands he attend morning meetings, he doesn’t own the school and I don’t think he silently demands anyone to fawn over him when he talks…he is going to be Alpha one day, it is in his blood to be dominating and s**t,” I have no idea why I suddenly felt the need to defend him. “And I am probably the worst person in the world because most of their meetings are about how I broke a rule or did something stupid,” “Nothing to say about his relationship with Jena and their very public displays of affection?” Jess asked as she watched me closely. “What do you want me to say? By the time I even realized I even had a crush on him, he was already with Jena,” now I’m defending myself. “And how was it that you started liking him? Because I don’t see it…” Jessica’s question threw me off, but I quickly looked over at Jason. After all, he and I had spent quite a bit of time talking about our crushes. “You don’t know?” Jason asked her curiously. “What don’t I know?” Jess is surprised that she doesn’t know everything, and I can’t help but simply smile at that. “What you don’t know is that Seff stood up for me,” I said as I closed my eyes for a moment, thinking back to that night when Seff got me out of trouble. “Ok, you are going to have to give me more details than that!” Jess said, and I opened my eyes to see her lean forward, eager to hear more about this. “Can you remember that night we fell asleep doing that stupid movie marathon?” I waited and watched as Jessica tried to remember which night. “The night I told you about my mom?” I did my best to help her remember and the second I mentioned my mom, it was as if the light had been switched on as she suddenly started nodding. “Right, so I was trying my best to sneak back into the pack and for whatever reason, Seff was out running. I bumped right into him and…” I shivered as I remembered the way his hands on my arms made me feel all tingly and warm. “Anyway, the patrol found us and automatically knew I was up to no good, but with Seff being there, they weren’t sure what was going on. I remember thinking – oh s**t, he is going to be in so much trouble – but then he put his arm around my shoulders and lied,” “Oh oh…what did he say?” Jess is really into this story, as she is trying to understand why I have a crush on Seff. “He said – I caught this one trying to sneak out, but I stopped her,” “That’s it?” Jess had a look of utter disappointment on her face, and I burst out laughing. “Trust me, I went over that night in my head for weeks…” I said truthfully. “At first I just thought he was doing it to look like the hero or something,” “Yeah, that’s how it sounds,” Jess scoffed. “It was bothering me so much that I cornered him about it. It was truly the first time we had spoken and when I threw it in his face about using me to look good, he was genuinely surprised that I would think something like that. He told me that he didn’t want me to get into any more trouble and yeah…that’s the moment my crush went from ‘entitled prick’, to ‘you are awesome!’,” the light was back in Jessica’s eyes as the realization hit home. “Of course…the very next time I got into trouble was also the last time he talked to me,” that was the part that sucked the most. “What did he say?” Jess is now on the edge of the bed, hanging onto my every word. “He said…and I hate that I can still remember it so clearly…but he said – so much for helping you not get into any more trouble,” “Ooh! Burn!!” “Yeah, the disappointment was clear as day and I felt so guilty that I was on my best behavior for about three weeks,” “Oh yeah, I remember those three weeks. You were so stubborn and s**t,” Jess sat there as she finally started putting the puzzle pieces together. While she is doing that, Jason is now on his phone – doing who knows what – while I think about Seff and Jena both being in the same pack as me. If they do truly turn out to be mates, it would be utter hell for me. Suddenly I had an idea and I grabbed Jessica’s knee to get her attention. “Hang on…” I said and I quickly explained what would happen if Seff and Jena were mates and how she would then come over to our pack. “That is going to suck for you,” Jason pointed out, and I nodded. “It would...and since I’m a year behind, that would mean I would have to suffer through that for twelve shitty months. But…” I paused as my idea blossomed and formed into the best idea ever. “If Jena leaves The Hillside pack…” I let my voice trail off and Jessica immediately jumped up. “Then you would be free of having to watch them!” I flung myself at my best friend. “Exactly!” I knew that this wasn’t going to be easy, especially for my father, but as I sat down on the corner of my bed, I told them what I was thinking. This was a good time for us to talk about it, since my father had left earlier to take a walk along the beach, and I had yet to hear him return. Jason and Jess helped me put together my plan and when I got ready for bed, the two of them went to his room. I had to remind them that the walls were thin and not to have s*x. Jason had blushed and Jess had punched my arm. Good times. Good memories. « » “What are you trying to say to me, Robin?” my father questioned the following morning. “I don’t fit in, dad, and no matter how much I want to…I won't ever fit in,” I complained. Jess and Jason were having fun in the jacuzzi while my father and I sat in the kitchen talking. This was the one hour together that he had demanded, and I had not wasted any time in putting my plan into action. “I know how much you love it there, and I can’t change how I feel about the pack,” “You want to go to Hillside on your own?” he asked, needing confirmation. I knew that he was struggling to wrap his head around it and I could see that he was about to shoot down my idea. “Dad, I love you, you know I do and every time I do something against the rules, it's you that gets into trouble. Everyone looks at me like I’m this horrible wolf because I’m young and I want to have fun, but you and I both know that the others are doing pretty much the same thing as me. The only difference is they are smart about it,” “Well, why can’t you be smart about it?” “No, dad, you aren’t getting the point. They are smart about it because they are hiding it. I’m not. Jessica and Jason both know who I am,” my father went pale as I revealed the truth to him. “That’s why I don’t think about getting into trouble because I don’t have to hide anything from them,” it's not against the rules to share our secret, but it wasn’t always the best idea. Silence fell between us as I listened to Jess giggling like a schoolgirl – oh wait, she is one. “Ok, how about this…” my father leaned forward, and I raised my eyebrows at him curiously. I could sense a deal of some sort coming. “We will continue our vacation time here, do what we originally planned on doing and if – and that’s a big if, Robin – but if Jena does turn out to be Seff’s mate, you can go to Hillside, but not without me,” “What’s the catch?” I asked, even though I already knew the answer. “If Jena is not Seff’s mate, then we stay at Silent Warriors,” I opened and closed my mouth as I tried to think of a way out of this deal. “Ok, but…Seff’s mate could be anyone else in the pack,” I pointed out with a smug look on my face. “True…but his mate may not be in the pack…” “Ok, let’s be real about this for a minute,” I take a deep breath as I consider this deal and make it work for me. “If Seff finds his mate, whether it be Jena or someone else…we leave the pack,” my father quickly nods in agreement. “Until he finds his mate, we can stay…or ok…wait up,” I pause as I think about this for a moment. “I have roughly a little over a year before I transition, if Seff doesn’t find his mate until then, that means we stay at Silent Warriors,” “Because you are hoping you will find your mate and thus put an end to this ridiculous crush you have on your future Alpha?” he is teasing me, and I lean over the countertop to slap his arm. “Dad!” my father chuckled as he stood up from his seat. “Deal?” he questioned as he held out his hand and I quickly grabbed it, shaking our deal.
