Chapter 6: Life (1)

‘Another big tip… He’s really rich… I mean if he orders a cleaning service like this every week or more then… wow… that’s a lot of money he’s throwing away… then yet it was a mistake he ended up sleeping with me so… so… should I really be using his kindness?’ Nash stopped in his tracks to think for a bit then continued walking. ‘Who am I kidding?! I can’t afford to lose out on so much money… I need it… and if he’s willing to just hand it over for as little as sleeping with him then who am I to refuse?’ He stopped again.
“Am I an i***t?” Nash asked out loud, an elderly lady that was standing next to him on the sidewalk waiting to cross the street. She turned to look at him then took a step back as if to distance herself from a potential psychopath.
‘Alright… I mean… if I speak about it as if I’m just taking the money I’d actually be lying… he’s hot… like really hot… which is the issue… then yet if he wasn’t I wouldn’t sleep with him… No… enough of this…’ Nash’s erratic and somewhat dramatic narration of his everyday life came to a haul as he got back to his apartment. “Keep it cool… he doesn’t need to know…” He muttered to himself as he walked in.
“Bro! You’re back unusually early today!” With a cheerful voice a younger boy in a wheelchair rolled up to Nash and tried to give him a hug.
“Yeah… there was only one job for the day…” Nash replied as he leaned forward to hug his younger brother.
“Really? Does that mean you didn’t make much today…” The boy said in a bit of a saddened voice as he looked down. He seemed to be about thirteen years old but there was something off about his voice and skin. It was somehow breaking as if he was covered in dead skin and his voice was much deeper than that of a young child that hadn’t yet hit puberty.
“Not at all, in fact it was such a big job that I made more money than usual… So… Tommy do you want to eat anything special today?” Nash asked as he knelt down on the ground as to be at eye level with his brother.
“Hm… can we have something like stew? With actual meat in it?” Tommy asked with an enthusiastic sounding voice, both his hands brought up to his chest as if he was trying to simulate jumping up and down in his wheelchair.
“Sure… but that’s not that different than usual, don’t you want to eat a steak or maybe hamburgers or pizza?” Nash asked as he tilted his head to the side, urging the boy to wish for something more than the bare minimum.
“What?! Can I?! How much money did you even make today?!” Tommy looked more surprised than ever after hearing his brother’s suggestions.
“I made plenty, so tell me what you want…” Nash said as he stood up and petted his brother’s hair which felt rough to the touch as if it was dead at the roots.
“Then, then… then… I want hamburgers! Two of them! Can I?” Tommy asked with glittering eyes as he looked up at his brother, as if putting his entire leftover energy in trying to convince the man to agree.
“Of course… let’s make them three for good luck, what do you say?” Nash asked as he went to order in food. They sat together to choose what to eat and after the food arrived Tommy looked like he was in Heaven.
“This is awesome… so much food just for me…” Tommy unwrapped the first hamburger and began eating it with such vigor you’d think the boy hadn’t eaten for days.
“Calm down and chew when you eat, you’re not a snake, don’t swallow things whole…” Nash said as he took a napkin and began wiping away the boy’s face which was already covered in ketchup.
“But… I want to hurry up and eat it faster… There might not be anything else afterwards…” Tommy said as he looked down at his food again and began eating once more, this time a bit slower as his brother had suggested him.
“There will be, so don’t worry…” Nash said with a bit more of a saddened voice. ‘Has he been thinking like this all this time? Do I not bring enough food home?’ He couldn’t help but feel rather powerless when hearing his brother speak like that.
“Are you really earning that much already? Or… don’t tell me you were stealing?!” Tommy said with a panicked voice as he almost choked on the burger he was eating.
“Don’t talk with your mouth full… and I wasn’t stealing… the client was so happy with the work I did that he left me a big tip. That’s all…” Nash reassured his brother as he sighed a bit while looking at the mess that was made. ‘As if I’d ever have the guts to steal anything…’ He thought to himself. No matter how low the man had gotten he’d never once resorted to such underhanded tactics up until now.
“Wow… I didn’t know it was possible to earn a lot while being a cleaner, maybe I’ll try being that too!” Tommy said with excitement once more. “Cleaning might even be fun… maybe I’ll be one of those bad assess that double as an agent and has a normal job like that! Wouldn’t that be cool?! Do you think I can do that?” He asked, even though he seemed motivated, his attention span didn’t seem to be much.
“Sure you can… but you’d have more luck with studying something else… Weren’t you passionate about math though?” Nash asked as he leaned his chin on the palm of his hand that rested a top the table.
“It’s boring though…” Tommy replied while opening up the second hamburger. “I don’t want to study it anymore… and my classmates always try to copy my homework so it feels like they’re using me…” He complained.
“Well you never really liked focusing on something for a long time anyways… Then yet you used to draw a lot in class right?” Nash suggested. “Maybe you could do that instead?”
“Teacher took my notebook and said if I drew in it one more time she’d tear out the pages.” Tommy said as he looked down at the notebooks he had at the side of the table. “It’s not fun anymore knowing I might get it all ruined eventually…” He remarked as he bit into his hamburger again.
“She won’t do that so draw as much as you like…” Nash tried to reassure him but his brother shook his head from side to side.
“No, I’m not doing it anymore!!!” The boy yelled out again, this time with a more stern voice than before.
“Well… that’s fine as well…” Nash said as he sighed once more, while waiting his brother to finish eating.
“Aren’t you going to eat anything?” Tommy asked as he noticed the man hadn’t taken a single bite out of the burger he’d bought for himself.
“I’m not very hungry… you can eat this one as well if you want…” Nash said as he noticed the other’s gaze shifting.
“Is that really alright?” Tommy asked while staring at the last burger.
“Of course it is…” Nash said as he smiled and stood up. “I’ll shower, alright? So be sure to put the wrappers in a bag and clear out the table as much as you can.”
“Sure thing!” Tommy said with a happy sounding voice as he took the last burger on the table.
Nash went to the bathroom and closed the door behind him. “f**k… that was close… I can feel my stomach growling…” He muttered to himself quietly as he turned on the bathroom sink and began drinking water to hopefully fill his stomach up a bit. ‘I knew I should have ordered more… but then yet I still haven’t bought him the medicine… I can’t afford to splurge more than this…’ He thought to himself as he lifted his head up to look himself in the mirror. “Am I really… skinny?” He wondered out loud as he remembered Chazz’s words towards him.
Nash was already in the habit of skipping meals as to allow his brother to eat more, he didn’t think it actually showed up until the man pointed it out, now he was a bit more self conscious about it…
“Whatever… I have other things to worry about… especially…” Nash turned on the shower head and on top of him the water began spraying him continuously. It felt good to take a shower after a long day of work, even though the water was cold it was still better than having no water at all.
‘I can’t believe he’s reached that stage…’ Nash thought to himself as he pushed back his wet hair. In truth Tommy wasn’t a young boy, he was a man in his late twenties and they only had three years of difference between them. However the horrible illness that came upon Tommy was the reason his mind was slowly slipping away day after day… until the point his mind was reduced to that of a child, while his body had stopped aging after he hit thirteen years old.
There was nothing the medical professionals could realistically do that would be enough to help Tommy. It was a lost cause from the very beginning due to the lack of information of what exactly caused this illness… Their family had no prior history of any sort of deadly illness but Tommy had developed something that was thought to be hereditary.
Nash had taken the responsibility to take care of his brother after their parent’s divorce a few years back. Neither his mother nor father wanting to keep Tommy. But Nash remembered the better days before the illness had plagued his brother’s mind and even though it was a hopeless situation, he wanted to help his brother in the rough time that he was experiencing.
But it didn’t take long before it became a chore and even more than that it became extremely expensive. Regardless of that Nash never really gave up on his brother, he decided to do everything he could for him, up until the man’s last breath…
