How could Xander do this to her? Chelsea wondered as she wandered across the clinic reception.
When she had crossed the fence, she saw Xander with a group of people, and among them was her father, Alpha Connor, spotting an angry face. He was so angry that had he been white, his face would have become red.
But nonetheless, his red eyes didn't fail to show how angry he was.
Chelsea gulped, knowing how much she was in trouble and would certainly get punished one way or the other for disobedience.
She looked at Xander who was standing beside her father and was ready to direct her own anger towards him for exposing her when someone noticed how Alana was bleeding.
Everyone became alerted and they rushed to take her to the pack clinic. On the way, Chelsea's wounds were fully healed, so when they arrived she stayed at the reception. The receptionist wasn't at her desk so she was left alone there.
As the Leader, Alpha Connor was currently talking to the doctor to make sure Alana was okay and they were able to contact her parents.
Just then, Chelsea noticed Xander coming towards her.
"How dare you!" she accused as he stopped in front of her. "Why did you tell father I sneaked into the forest?" she said to Xander angrily.
"I am sorry Chelsea," he started apologizing, seeing how angry she was.
"You knew it was just a game and I was going to come out soon. Why did you tell everyone about it? I only stayed ten minutes more because I found Alana and had to help her."
"Ten minutes?" Xander looked perplexed. "You were in there for two hours!" he exclaimed.
"Two hours?" Now it was Chelsea's turn to look confused. Was Xander playing another game?
"Yes," Xander nodded.
"I was worried about you so I told the Alpha that you went there and still haven't come back," he explained.
Chelsea was silent. And truly, when she looked at the wall clock behind the receptionist's desk, it was 3am.
She knew she didn't spend that much time in the forest, but she wasn't so surprised after what happened to her and Alana in the magical forest.
"I am ready to take full responsibility for my actions. I will accept whatever punishment I will get for risking your life like that," he lowered his head and Chelsea pitied him. "I swear to you that if I had known that the stories were true I would never have been," he said somberly.
"Look, I am sorry for shouting at you like that." Chelsea sighed.
Xander was her best friend and she knew he would never purposely bring harm in her way.
Chelsea knew his punishment was going to be grave if the alpha learnt that he was the one that challenged her to go there since she was the only heir and doing that was basically risking her life, so when Alpha Connor called to question them, she shut Xander up and took all the blame.
Alpha Connor punished her by making her do more assignments and grounding her for five days.
He knew she was lying to protect her best friend, and the fact that she saved a pack member made him more proud of his daughter, that she would be a good leader when she turned twenty-one.
Present.
"Look Alana," Alpha Chelsea said as Alana was almost done with her hair. "Whatever other world it is you keep talking about,"
"Kiain realm Alpha," Alana reminded her.
"It doesn't exist. You know what happened three years ago and who knows what would have happened to you if I wasn't there," Chelsea said.
Alana was quiet. No one needed to voice it out loud that she wouldn't have survived on her own when she decided to sneak out of her home and venture into the forest.
There was an awkward silence as Alana did Alpha Chelsea's hair. Alpha Chelsea could see through the mirror how gloomy her friend was and knew her mood could affect her hair.
"So what did you find out?" Alpha Chelsea asked her friend.
Alana's face suddenly brightened, her mood lifted. She had always been fascinated by the mystic stuff.
"So, two hundred and fifty years ago today exactly," Alana started.
"This pack is that old?" Alpha Chelsea interrupted, already feeling skeptical about the story.
"Please just let me finish," Alana said with glee. Like a kid who was about to get candy.
"Okay, okay," Alpha Chelsea surrendered.
"So, two hundred and fifty years ago today exactly, a time when witches were all seen as evil and a relationship with them was forbidden," Alana continued.
Being a hybrid between a werewolf and a witch herself, she was proof that things had changed drastically over the years. Although some werewolves are still not completely okay with that.
"A werewolf by the name of Raymond found out that his mate was a witch, Gretchen," Alana said, her eyes widening and grinding her teeth for dramatic effect.
"It was a forbidden relationship at the time," Alana said.
"Witches were burnt at sight," Alpha Chelsea said dreadfully.
"Yes," Alana nodded. "So Gretchen used a spell to conceal that she was a witch. Raymond marked her and they soon got married and started living together. Soon people found out. They threatened Raymond to reject her, but he wouldn't. So one night, the people of this place chased them through the night. Canines, pitchforks, crazy chants, stones, fire and all," Alana shuddered.
Alpha Chelsea felt uncomfortable. That was exactly how her species dealt with the witches years ago.
"Raymond was ready to lay his life down for his mate. The people chased them into what is now known as the Gretch forest," Alana pressed her lips together.
"What happened next?" Alpha Chelsea found herself eagerly asking for more.
"Hmmm, The details are kind of sketchy from this point,"
"Just tell me,"
"Okay," Alana laughed.
"All it says is that Raymond and Gretchen committed suicide in the forest but there weren't any more details explaining that part."
"You think the people killed the two of them, but because they didn't want to be accosted for killing one of them, they covered it up as suicide?" Alpha Chelsea contributed as Alana made the last touch to her hair and stood there admiring it.
"I don't know. Possibly," Alana shrugged. "But ever since then, the forest has become dark and will attack anyone that dares to cross it," she continued, and both their minds went to where they were also attacked. "Some say that both Raymond and Gretchen are still alive and the forest is hiding and protecting them, while some say that it's Gretchen's soul. That they were killed unjustly and she is still angry and seeks revenge to this day,"
Alpha Chelsea sighed deeply, letting the story sink in.
"You know," she commented. "This is still the most interesting fairytale I have ever heard."
"Come on Alpha!" Alana exclaimed almost hysterically. "I swear it's true!"
"Yeah yeah," Alpha Chelsea teased her friend with a grin.
Their banter was interrupted when a knock came on the door.
"Come in," Alpha Chelsea said. The door opened and in came a she-wolf pushing a rack with different dresses and her other hand held a make-up box.
"Good evening Alpha," the Shewolf greeted you. "My name is Andrea and I will be the one to do your make-up. And Luna Carol said to choose and wear one of these dresses."
Alpha Chelsea sighed, already feeling exhausted. She wasn't a fan of make-up but this was supposed to be a special day.
After they were done with the make-up, Alpha Chelsea started to choose between the ten designer dresses her mother had bought for her.
With the help of Alana and Andrea, Alpha Chelsea decided to wear a pool green dress.
A knock came on the door and Alpha Chelsea already knew who it was, so she gave permission for him to come in.
Xander opened the door and went inside the room. His eyes fell on the two other ladies and he frowned.
"Beta Xander," Alana and Andrea both greeted him at the same time.
"Excuse us," he replied curtly.
The two girls both gathered their equipment.
Andrea was the first to leave. She bowed to Alpha Chelsea before exiting the room.
'I don't like him,' Alana mind linked to Alpha Chelsea before exiting the room and closing the door, leaving the two.
"Did you not recognize my friend, Alana?" Alpha Chelsea said as she checked the dress in front of her.
"The girl you risked your life to save? How could I ever forget?" He snorted.
"You know," Alpha Chelsea closed her eyes for a brief moment before opening them. "You are going to be officially announced as their Beta as soon. You have to show them that you care about them."
"Come on Chelsea, you know we always have to appear tough in front of our subjects."
"Or else they will underestimate us and take us for granted, blah blah blah", Chelsea finished with a roll of her eyes while ignoring the fact that he didn't address her with her Alpha title. Not that he ever did. Not when they were younger and not when she turned twenty-one, which was the official age of becoming an Alpha. Of course, after one has found their mate too, which would be today.
"Forget about that," Xander smiled, coming to stand in front of her. His face glowed and his eyes sparkled.
"You look beautiful today," he complimented.
"You don't look bad yourself." She complimented back. And true to her words. Xander was dressed in a customised black Tuxedo, his feet spotted expensive leather shoes while on his wrist was a silver watch. His hair gelled back.
"Looking forward to finding a mate of your own?" Alpha Chelsea teased.
"Nope, today is your special day and I am not looking forward to stealing your spotlight." Xander grinned.
"As if you could." she chuckled, her best friend making her feel more at ease.
"A little bird did tell me though," he used his finger to push her now straight hair behind her ear. "that someone isn't feeling too good today,"
Alpha Chelsea sat down on her bed and Xander sat beside her, watching her every move curiously, as if trying to figure her out.
"Xander, what if I don't get a mate? What if I get to find my mate but he is a total douchebag?"
"Well, if you don't get a mate," Xander took her hand in his. "I will always be ready if you want to take me as yours,"
Alpha Chelsea looked at their hands. She had known for a long time that Xander had a crush on her and wanted to be her mate and would make sure they were together every full moon, but she never felt the same way about him.
"And if you find a douchebag, you can always reject him and my offer would still stand."
"I have to get ready," She quickly changed the topic. "If I don't appear at the party on time, Mom won't hesitate to scold me in front of everyone," she said, and Xander chuckled. Everyone was aware of how Luna Carol wanted nothing but perfection.
"I will leave you to it then," he said, getting up. "See you at the party," he said and left.
Alpha Chelsea put on the dress along with earrings and a necklace. Lastly, she put on stilettos. Even though she was tall.
The party was being held out in the open so everyone could witness the full moon in all its glory.
Canopies, chairs and tables were set. A buffet to the side. Werewolves, including unmated Alphas, betas and warriors, including female werewolves, were gathered as waiters passed by, sharing drinks and snacks.
Alpha Connor and Luna Carol were greeting the guests. Beta Mark and his son, Xander, were also talking and laughing with some of the guests, but Alpha Chelsea decided to put something in her stomach first, so she went straight to the buffet table.
She picked up a plate and took a slice of pizza. She had taken a large bite when she heard a sleazy and annoying but familiar voice behind her.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't the Alpha wanna be."
