A Loveless Marriage

Chapter 14

Natalia’s POV

I always stick to one thing in my life; nothing comes free. Sooner or later we have to pay a price for it. That’s what happened with Theodore and I. When he chose the path of crime, he was disowned by our father. However, mom, she loved him. Why can’t she? She was a mother. She birthed him. She brought him into this world, and it’s not easy for any mother to abandon her child and she also couldn’t. But at that time, I was so young that I couldn’t understand what she had been through. How she was divided between her husband and her son.

She used to meet Theo without telling Dad. She even helped him with money and his criminal cases. But in the end, she also paid the price of being a mother to Theo when she was killed by one of the gang leaders to take revenge on him.

That day, came into our life like a volcano which was filled and was ready to blast. I was having lunch with my dad when Theo brought Mom home in his arms, all covered in blood. That day, I lost everything; my mom, dad, and my brother.

Yes, Theo was there to take care of me, but I snatched all the rights of a brother from him. Seeing Mom’s body, Dad lost his composure and shot himself on the spot with Theo’s revolver.

That was all. Since that day, nothing has remained the same between Theodore and me. He took all the responsibility for me, but I always knew that I would run away whenever I got a chance.

Marrying Magnus was the result of my anger with Theodore, since I knew he would never fulfill his duty as my brother and I wouldn’t allow him to snatch anyone else anymore from me.

I was lost in my thoughts when Andrew parked the car in front of the hospital and, without wasting a second, we were on our way to Xenia.

As soon as I saw Xenia in the arms of the nurse who was taking care of her, I walked to her, and took Xenia in my arms, and hugged her, “Xenia, baby.”

I was crying seeing her after a long time until I heard Andrew asking, “What happened, Nurse?”

She turned to Andrew and replied, “She is sleeping. She was unconscious and when she came to her senses, she was not having milk. She has got tired of crying and sleeping now.”

“Ohh God.”, I whispered and hugged her tightly, unaware of the fact that someone was looking at me. Suddenly I heard a female asking, “May I know why you took so long to come back? Your baby was crying uncontrollably. If you can’t take care of your baby, then you shouldn’t have planned one.”

I looked towards the door and found a woman in her thirties wearing a white coat and I concluded she was a pediatrician. She walked inside, and I apologized, “I am sorry doctor.”

She took a long breath and replied, “A sorry won’t help, Mrs. Wales. If you have to go somewhere, you must take her with you. She is just a year old. She can’t live with only her father. She needs her mother the most.”

I looked at Xenia in my arms, who was sleeping, and told her with guilt, “I know, doctor. I am wrong. I should have come back earlier.”

“Please make sure to feed her as soon as she wakes up.”, she suggested, and I nodded, “Yeah.”

With that, the doctor left and Andrew asked to stay with Xenia and left for God knows where.

Andrew’s POV

I always knew that Magnus has been through a lot in his life, and he is just trying to survive after the demise of Sophia. She was the light of her life. She was the only person to whom he trusted. He had everything; a loving family, wealth, and got everything without saying. However, when he lost Sophia, I was the one who saw him. He lost his senses. His daughter was crying right beside him, but he was trying to wake Sophia up. That day I didn’t know if I should pity him or console him. I used to think he was the luckiest man on this planet when he married the love of his life, but when she died everything changed. I wished no one got a life like him again. But I never thought these thoughts of mine were going to change. He could be lucky again that he will get a girl like Natalia in his life. He loved Sophia, but Natalia loved his daughter, knowing that he would never accept her as his wife.

I wish they could have met in different circumstances.

When I was talking to Natalia, I saw Magnus looking at both of us, but I ignored him. He is a tough nut to crack, so I thought about talking with him later. Once we were done talking with the doctor, I left Xenia with Natalia and went to Magnus.

I tapped his shoulder and he shockingly turned to me, “What?”

“Did you hear what the doctor said just now?”, I asked, although I know he did. He didn’t answer immediately, so I continued, “She needs a mother. And Natalia is her mother.”

He suddenly looked at me and was about to open his mouth, but I interrupted him,“So for your daughter, please try to leave things behind and mend your relationship with Natalia.”

“Are you saying that I should forget Sophia?”, He asked, getting offensive, but I replied calmly, “No, I mean to say, give Natalia a chance.”

I made him turn to look at Natalia who was feeding Xenia and said, “She is a blessing that came into your life as your daughter’s mother.”

He looked at me and I saw tears in his eyes and I continued, “Please do not disrespect that blessing.”

“Andrew, I can’t-”, he said with shivering lips and I held his shoulders to make him understand, “I know, you can’t accept her as your wife, but at least accept her as Xenia’s mother.”

“Please. Talk with Natalia and try to clear a few things.”, I continued.

“But-”, He started again, but I stopped him, “Just try for once.”

“Okay, I will.”, He nodded, and I took a breath of relief.
