15 Planning Julian cracked his eyes open and instantly wished he had not. The light, so intense it seemed to burn into his brain, made him duck away, or at least try to. It felt like a torch literally jabbed into his head while it was still burning. But that did not compare with the fire that blossomed all over his skin, growing all the greater the more fully awake, and aware of himself, he became. A guttural groan, nearly a scream, escaped his lips before he could force himself to silence. Memory flooded back, knowledge racing ahead of pain to reclaim his mind before madness had a chance to take hold, and he grimaced, forcing the cries down as he took control once again.
