Chapter Five
There is a thin line between insanity and being efficient. You’ve crossed it.
Hani had her fair share in enjoying her pregnancy.
It had been some weeks after she had been told that she was pregnant and so far, she was enjoying everything that comes with being pregnant. Even the daily need to vomit during most of the day was something she came to enjoy since she does glow every time she does so. She had her share of reading through the different ways that a human had given birth to someone who was part wolf — thinking it would be nothing but painful but to her surprise, it was in the same form as a human would to it’s child.
To what she had read, the wolf part of the werewolves starts to show itself when they reached the age of around 6-10 years old. Even if some kids could gather their strength much earlier than others, pups would not shift until their wolves are ready.
There was also implication on the mother if she had given birth to wolves, although she had been well are that the infant pups are much more heavier and larger than human infants. She would be gaining more weight that what she had anticipated then.
“I am getting worried about him, V.” Hani whispered in the room as she glanced outside of the window. She could see an array of warriors patrolling while the others were training their very best that she could physically see them sweat. Her eyes never left them as she offered another word to her friend. “He is clearly going through something but is not tough enough to admit it to me.”
She had realized the changed that had happened to her husband while she was going through the weeks of her pregnancy. Everything was nothing but light at first as the man marveled on the fact that he was going to become a dad. More on more, he was getting more involved in her life as he was before.
It last for — maybe around three weeks — before he changed approach.
When the third week of knowing that his wife was pregnant, reality had set into Maddox. He had been nothing but focused on spending more time with her that he rarely set time to set more boundaries around the pack and change the different arrays of security they have.
The man fears that someone will infiltrate the pack and he was worried that he will f**k things up just as when his Luna was pregnant. He will not make the same mistakes as his father did.
He could not do something like that.
He will lose his damn mind if he did.
Looking at the woman who was still has her eyes closed for a year now, Hani settled in a sigh and the need to hit her friend with a bat was growing by the second. She hated when people are not settling in on what she wanted to share and most cases, even if Nvae was someone who gave zero cents of f**k, she acted like she care.
She really missed her friend.
Nvae hated resting more than everyone else in the planet — she always needed to make sure that everyone she cared about was safe. There had been a full day where Nvae had choose to check on the perimeter around the area that was new to her and did not even miss the idea of sleep. The woman she acted in the same way as her husband does, the need to keep the people around the safe was very strong.
It was this time where she realized that your best friend is really just the opposite gender of your soul mate. For she quickly realized that she would approach things in the same tremor that the beta. Jax would do some thing in situations that blended well with her personality and she lived for it.
“The baby is healthy, by the way. I am sure that you would be someone who would be very worried for me and the baby if you are awake.” Hani whispered as she holds her hand softly, being very careful not to disrupt anything that was poked inside of her skin. As soon as she felt the coldness of her skin, a frown settled in her lips. “You always hated the cold and look at this, your hands are nothing but ice.”
By this point, she was never sure if it was the pregnancy but her eyes watered by feeling her friend slowly losing the heat that she used to have. Every single day, she fears the inevitable fact that she had lost her best friend due to her own selfishness.
Even if she did not want to stress herself, she found herself clutching the frail hand.
“I am so sorry for failing you, V.” She sobbed, gently holding the hand with nothing but adoration. “I should have visited earlier than I should and checked up on your whenever I could. All I did was drown myself in work and not once think that you needed me. I should have trusted you and your capability in turning everything around. I should have known that you are onto something so beautiful. I am so sorry for not believing you when you are still awake..”
Seeing the new tubes that were stuck inside her skin, she felt nothing but apologetic upon seeing her in this case. While the woman was good at aiding people — Nvae hated the feeling of anything pointy inside her skin. To see her being able to live because of medication and with some help of machine, she almost could not believe it.
“You have to wake up, V. You have to get these off of you and binge with me to some shows that you have missed.”
Beep.
A chuckle escaped from her lips, thinking that it was her answer to her words. “I suspect you are butting some slick sass at me at the second.” Smiling softly, her heart warmed into remembering what used to be a version of her friend. “I kind of needed that side of you right now, to be honest.”
Slowly guiding Nvae’s hand to her stomach, she wanted her to be aware that she was close to being someone’s godmother. Hani will never accept the fact that the medication work and she will not survive. While Jax is showing nothing but confidence to his mate — she will do the same.
Nvae had survived all her life with people who treated her nothing but a weapon to be able to throw into wolves. She will survive being able to fight something that nobody could figure out yet.
“Jax is still finding some cure to whatever ails you, so you do not need to worry about him. The man will flip the whole word in order to find a cure for you.” Hani updated her. As the spike in her heart came contact, a small hope flutters inside her heart. “I will never pull you out of his again, you can count on that. Just please, give the world a chance and open your eyes for me.”
If this were a kind of story where everything is granted with just a single wish, Hani would have sworn that Nvae might have opened her eyes. Even if there are paranormal things in the world, she could not put everything in the world. Miller is the only person she could trust with Nvae’s life.
Despite the constant declining of her health, Hani knew that Miller is doing everything she could to make sure that the beta female’s health was improving by the second. It was only the loss of theory, which had her wrapped in stress and confusion.
“We will figure this one out, V.” Hani nodded, telling her mind the same inane thing. “Soon enough, you will get up from that damn bed and kick everyone who tries you. I trust you would.”
.
.
Maddox looked very dangerous at the very second.
Due to his demand on the patrols, he rarely has time to look after himself. There were now some subtle beard on his face and his hair was getting longer — but not enough that it was connoted as someone who had long hair.
The man looked more mature than ever and while Hani does appreciate the sudden change of his look, she knew very well that the man had achieved it in nothing but forcing himself to be in a load of stress. It is something she could not condone but never had a chance to stop him.
Everyone was doing good in terms of being the best in their patrols. No one was able to pass them and there are rarely any injuries whenever someone would try them. It was only nothing but rare when some i***t tried and raid their place. Maddox has everything prepared to ruin their life if they tried his pack.
By this point, he knows that all wolf knows who he was.
“Calvin. I need status on your patrol.” He uttered, pointing to his lane with holds little to no attacks for the past couple days. “Are you sure there are enough men who are looking through all directions? I needed to have some news on your side as it could be their next target.”
Everyone doubts that. Calvin is a very large man, the very reason his lane was not having any attack was because the very sight of Calvin can scare anyone who wanted to try his patrol. Not only was the man scary and big but his strength is something that one person should not try.
The warrior nodded, bowing his head. “I am very positive, Alpha. No errors in my patrol.”
“How many did you have lingering by?”
“We had around ten rogues who wanted some shelter and so far, there are no marked red in sight to our patrol border. Some passers would come and go but we reckon that they are on the neighboring pack who had some hunt for the night.” Calvin announced with a good memory.
“Good.” He nodded.
Almost half of the warriors were now present during night patrols while some were training with the newly shifted pups. He needed to make sure that there is little to no room for mistake during these times. Maddox had almost made a mistake a couple nights back.
It was not like one of them was complaining as they fully understand why he was acting in such way. Having his wife pregnant is a very large thing for the man and something that does trigger an intense emotions from his past. Maddox was fully engaged with his mother and watched over her during her pregnancy. He was happy and loved the idea of being an older brother.
To have them all whisked away from him is something he did not want to happen again.
An attack would have happened not that long ago if Mason was not quick to spot a group of marked red who are sprinting through the pack. It would have been a very dangerous feast if the man were located on another patrol. The very fact that they had dodged a bullet there had made Maddox turn into a more madman than before.
No f*****g rogues can infiltrate his pack.
Scanning the map of the land surrounding the pack, he had made sure that everyone was already aware of the new places that people would be posted. Like before, he was changing it almost every couple hours that passed and so far—it had worked as it had.
No other rogues felt like it was safe to venture to the land in which strength was the one that is clearly focused.
However, he could not be too sure about the standard of his pack.
“I am thinking that we place one a couple miles away from the pack.” Maddox muttered as he looked at Drixon. Seeing that the man — as the delta — has his fair share of contributing to the patrol, he knew the dangers that would be of his decisions. The man could only frown as Maddox settled on the side. “Is there something wrong that you would like to tell, Drixon?”
Drixon frowned before nodding his head. “That is very close to an open land. I am sure not the warriors would have some safe patrolling in that distance, Alpha. We might get some of them injured if no one is watching them, which just double the patrol in one spot rather then spreading it.”
“We still own it.” Maddox injected.
“Yes, we do.” He nodded before pointing into another piece of land. “But this one is a shared land. Nobody owns this so rogues would be going on and off in this property. While it is good to be prepared for an attack, it would be bad if someone who is on heat was traveling or if they had attacked rogues who are only on alert.”
Maddox nodded, seeing the way that he had thinking through that far. “Fair enough. We will go south bound of the usual patrol in this spot.”
“That would then cover two spots at such a blind spot in their location. Damn.” Steven agreed as he looked through the scale map. “It is actually a more efficient idea than the first one, Alpha. I will have to agree with this one.”
“But we needed to add more men since it would cover two individual spots.” He added.
The meeting had gone for what seem like hours, to the group of men who are needing to decipher their newly approach for their security. Everybody was nothing but impressed to the new strategy that Maddox had came up with the patrols and it seemed like every post has its strength that another could easily join if they are out numbered.
Mason could fully understand why despite the young age from before — this pack never faltered by the hand of Maddox. The man was a beast when it came to defense, clearly showing his dominance, as his strength was almost all around. He knew that the only weakness that he has was his Luna.
It is why he needed every means there is to make sure that she was safe.
For Mason doubts that this man could ever die in a battlefield. While he will suffer injures — may it be major or minor — this seemed like a wolf who would never die while fighting for his pack.
He felt good, knowing full well that his little kid was safe with this man’s arms. From the stories that he had heard about Maddox, the kid was supposed to be an asshole who never really blended well with the type of Alpha who wanted to show their dominance.
Maddox was radiating with dominance.
He did not even need to try.
It was understandable that he does pose threat whenever there would be a gathering for their kind. Someone as powerful and intimidating as the man would pose threat to anyone. Maddox only seemed stable enough in his pack as he felt like this was the only place that he did not need to put his guards up.
Maddox nodded. “Everyone disperse and make sure all the warriors are aware.”
All head warriors shouted their respect before leaving the post and running to where they were assigned. Maddox looked through the pack to see the entire defense that he had thought through for hours and nodded when he saw that everyone was in position.
This leaves no area for mistake.
Every single post that they would attack — can lead to a rogue’s demise.
He plans on not making the same mistakes that his father did. Even if he has nothing but respect to the man, he will follow all his teachings — but he will make sure that he will correct all the mistakes that his father had done. Maddox was glad that he had three help for these kind of crisis, and he was nothing but appreciative that Mason, Alexis and Steven had agreed on doubling everything up.
Maddox was not aware that just like him — the three were trying to prove something to themselves too. Like what he wanted to achieve, the three royal guards wanted to prove that if they were given the same chances as they had from before… they will not achieve the same failure of a mission.
This time, they will avenge her failures.
Whatever it takes, they needed to make sure that Hani Blaze would not suffer the same consequences as their Princesses did — or Maddox’s own mother.
.
.
There was a con in not having a Beta Female.
One of those is not having a proper human to interact in the damn pack house. Maddox has a very luxurious house for something that is supposed to be the general house of the higher ranks in the pack. While the house does have the rustic vibe to it, having to be designed outside as something that was covered with wood — it was still nothing but a touch of modern and something so beautiful.
To her favorite spot in the house, which was the living room, was this beautiful sight of a tall cave that serves as the fireplace of the house. While the house touched the modern part of the world, it still has some aspect of nature from inside it.
She had never been more in love with the house as she was now.
However, it does have its difficult sides.
The house was nothing but a mansion filled with empty rooms. It’s a house for the triad and their children that would soon control the pack. Since the delta does not have one for his just yet—she was the only female who was living in the damn house. While there are some servers from time to time, she hardly had anyone in the damn house to talk to.
Sometimes, it really does bore her to death when she’s out of things to do.
Now that her husband had been stealing her jobs, she has nothing else to do than to watch the fire slowly lose its flames and basically lose some brain cells. She doubts that she will be able to train given that she some difficulty in moving too much — it does make her want to vomit and just rest for the day.
It’s safe to say that her body wanted nothing else to do than rest.
Which, of course, does not really suit with what her mind wanted to do. She was restricted between her own mind and thoughts and it is bugging her like crazy.
As her clock had rung, it signifies that it would be an hour before her husband would be home. It gave her enough time prepare some of her newly found skill, which was cooking. Maddox loved food as much as any wolf that would gobble up food like they were nothing but air. She really wondered how all of them had a body build by the gods if they eat like a damn pig.
Being very generous to her serving size by this time, Hani had spent the entire hour preparing the food and smiling at the smell of nothing but that delicious aroma. She had been too engrossed in her cooking to even realized that her husband was a few minutes late than what he had addressed he would.
A frown etched on her lips.
Did the man forget that he had promised her that she would be back at dinner? Deciding to give him some slack, Hani sat on the dining table — alone and clearly troubled. Her anger was something she could still control but the hunger from inside her is very different from her emotions.
She’s eating for two and her husband was missing the time that he should be home. As the minutes turn into an hour, she was done. Prompting up from her seat, she made sure that the food was covered before walking out of the pack house. To her head was a small beanie that will cover enough of her head since it was already too late for her to be out and about.
“Drixon.” She called, stopping every movement around her.
Everyone was aware that Hani could not be out from the house during the night time due to the impending number of attacks that seemed to be happening. Not only that, but Maddox is clearly not happy in having her exposed to places that could have a rogue and possibly pose her threat and to the child.
f**k.
Maddox will kill them all if something happened to her.
The man, seemingly surprised, had whipped his head in her direction. Upon seeing the woman, she was quick to raise a hand — automatically stopping him from linking the Alpha and telling him that she was out from her spot. Judging by the anger written in her face, it would be wise to listen to the woman rather than get reprimanded by her.
Every pair of eyes of the warriors were dawned into her, mortified that the pack’s Luna was out in the open field when it’s clearly night time. While they all know that she was dangerous on her own, she was carrying a child — and all were aware that she could hardly move fast enough without feeling nauseated.
This is bad news for their Alpha.
“Don’t any of your dare to link him. I will serious throw you in an open field if any of you tried to do so!” She stated, her anger evident in her voice.
Drixon nodded, terrified to anger a pregnant version of their Luna. The man has his fair share of calming down pregnant mates from his previous work and he had always been scared of being the man who was opposed of their anger. He could only bid a soft good luck in his head for the Alpha for what he had done.
“Am I understood?” She asked, looking at the men surrounding her.
He only beckoned his men to keep going to their own posts. Not one person meddled and continued on walking through their paths as if they had not just seen anything out of the ordinary.
It never ceases their feeling of worry, though.
“Of course, Luna. You are more scary than the Alpha, we will not question you."
She nodded. "Good."
"The Alpha is in the south border, if that’s what you wanted to know.” He offered the words softly, not trying to anger her further. When he saw two men who are close to them, he ushered them close. “I will have these two men to follow you and take you to him.”
“I do not think that is necessary, Drixon.” Hani declined.
Drixon frowned, shaking his head. “I am sorry, Luna. However, it is for your safety. It is night time and there is always a possibility of an attack during this time of night.”
“In that case, thank you, Drixon.”
It does not take for her to understand that Drixon needed to do this in order to feel safe before he had sprinted into his post. Even if she sees little to no evidence that anyone would attack her out of the open — she agreed reluctantly. Drixon might get punished if she really did end up getting injured or something.
“You are always welcome, Luna.” Drixon bowed.
Even if he wanted to personally address the Luna in the place, he knew that he did not want to be in between their argument. While the two never quarrel, everybody knew that no one would be able to stand against their wife whenever they were angry.
Especially if that said wife was pregnant.
Drixon sighed, clearly not even hinting that he was scared of females. He could only fear the very dreaded day that he will find the woman who would be able to control every fiber of his being.
Thinking of it gives him enough fear as it is.
Hani, on the other hand, was thinking of ways to kill her husband.
She will skin him alive if he dare get angry at her for forcing her to personally take her home when he lost the entire concept of time. The need to not flinch from the time that she was feeling the pickling of her legs due to the sudden hike of how f*****g long was now making her annoyed.
The south border is a b***h to walk on and her feet are hurting as it is. Not only was that her problem but also, her stomach is close to rumbling due to her child’s need to eat. Even if she wanted to turn back around and just basically beat the man with a pillow when he came back home — she was already close.
She could see Maddox standing from a post along with some men. He was telling them something as she could see the concentration written in his face. The man could always smell her from a while away but he seemed to be more focused to the task at hand to realize that his mate was below his post.
“Luna, should we link him to—”
“MADDOX f*****g BLAZE!” She screamed, alerting the whole men from the post. When the mortified face of her husband finally faces her, a small glimmer of mischief popped into her eyes as she grinned. “Hi there, Mr. Alpha. I am here to retrieve my husband, if that is alright with you.”
“What are you—”
He didn’t even have any words to say as he had jumped from the top of the post, eliciting a small squeal from Hani. It way too high for someone to jump but she knew that he was a werewolf — why was she so surprised? She was not sure.
For now, she is blaming it on the pregnancy.
That is right.
She finally found a loophole.
“It is dark outside. What are you doing out?” Maddox asked, clearly in rage.
Hani frowned, flickering his forehead. “Do not use that tone on me, Maddox. You told me you would be home an hour ago, Maddox. If you do not come home on your own feet, I am dragging your ass back home.”
“So she only needed to get pregnant for her to fight back.” Alexis grinned, leaning on the post.
Looking back at the man, she easily flipped him off. “Piss off.”
Mason only sighed as he slammed the man back in the head, making him grumbled upon having to feel the wrath of Mason. Hani had always been someone who had opposed whatever Maddox uttered — that is when she was a hunter who never knew that she was mated with the man. Now that she was fully mated with him, she really does find it hard to fight back to him.
“Hani—”
“And my feet hurts very much.” She grumbled, flailing her hands to her husband as a frown settled on her lips. “So, I need you to carry me home! Hurry up.”
Already knowing he lost this war, Maddox was quick to send some link to Mason some instructions, to which the man had fully understood. Even if he feels like he’s interrupting, Maddox also send some instructions to his Beta.
He was giving the man some time to link his mate’s health but his rounds were not complete. He needed someone else to whom he know would be safe and knew how he handles his rounds. If he did not receive the thing that he needed, he might go crazy.
I understand, Alpha. I will be on the north side. Jax replied on the link.
Offering his thanks, he had taken his time to walk back home while carrying his wife, as he fully knew that his wife would be nauseated if he paced in any faster movement than what he was currently doing. Even with her wearing nothing but to blind the cold, he could feel her burrowing closer to him.
“Hani, please do not repeat this stunt. This is dangerous and you easily get carried by the cold these days.” He breathes through the cold air. To see her out in the field and open to rogues to easily target her almost punched him through the lungs. “Please. I beg of you.”
Hani frowned, pinching his chest. “Then come home in time. I am very bored inside the house and I wanted to have you close to me. Hardly anyone is every present there.”
“Sweetheart.” He groaned, clearly not wanting to grant her that wish that she had.
To be able to give her his time from seven in the evening to six would be impossible as he needed all the given time in the world to make sure that she was safe. He had been missing sleep for quite a while but he had transferred his desk back to his own bedroom, just so he could make sure that she was safe while he worked through the long hours.
Whenever Hani would stir in her sleep, he would do everything he could to make her comfortable and cut any job that he has — however, he couldn’t simply shower her every hours that he has.
It does not guarantee her safety, especially their child.
One single mishap from him would be deadly for his slowly growing family and he would never let that happen — never again. As she burrowed deeper into his hold, he could not help but to pull her closer.
It took him some time before he had this woman in his arms and he will never let another rogue or marked red to take away the person who had made him feel like everyone is perfect as they were.
Even if he has the woman that he loved and she was close to giving him an heir, he still needed to make sure that he would not fail at his job description. His whole family needed to be safe from all the dangers. For years, he managed to keep the safety of the pack.
He will not start failing when he finally has a chance to build his own family.
“Maddox.” Hani called as her eyes were shut down.
He hummed with the winds, not bothering to answer her as his eyes were focused on making sure that no other creature were lurking from them in any angle that he would find.
“Why is it that you are very pressured in making sure that you’re doing something new with the patrols? They were fine as they were before.” Hani commented, confused with the idea that the man had slipped into his mind.
Maddox replied with a soft tone. “Patrols can be easily monitored from those who wanted to attack. If you hold the same people in one post and the same post every single time, it would not take a while before they realized the routine and the pack could be invaded. My constant changes in patrol had made the pack very difficult to infiltrate as they were not aware of the changes in my patrols.”
Hani was still unfamiliar with the defenses and offenses inside the pack. While she does train in making her body to be able to deflect and give out an attack—she still has not learned the basics in what it would take to make sure that the pack was giving the same amount of offense and defense to the eyes of those who wanted to raid them.
“But this was the first time in months that you’ve been away from the house for the entire day.” Hani commented. “I don’t know if it’s the pull that wanted you close or my pregnancy — but Maddox, I needed you too. Our child needed you too.”
A sigh escape from his lips upon hearing her share her own thoughts. He knew that the pregnancy was making her to crave her husband more — it is to make sure that the child inside was getting more heat than normal was her body was not giving it enough heat that it needed.
Not only was she like this because she is human, but all pregnant she-wolves react in the same way. Only they react in a more aggressive and very explicit way, but they reacted in a way that seemed like their body was nesting for the little pup.
When he had arrived back home, he could smell the delicious cooking from the second that he had stepped inside the door. The woman before him could even hardly smell it — but judging by the smell, he knew that she was improving with her cooking skills.
“You cooked for me.” He noticed.
She nodded, burrowing closer to the man. “But I am not that hungry anymore, thanks to the f*****g hike that you had forced me to make. I am just cold and I needed to be close to you..”
“Okay.” He agreed as he walked to their room. “I will bring you some if you feel hungry, so you only need to tell me once you are.”
Even if he wanted to lay her down back in the bed, he needed to work and he doubts that she would let him leave the area of the bed when she finally does lie down. Thinking the only logical reason, Maddox had sat on his office chair and she slept in his chest.
“You are f*****g working again.” Hani noticed without even opening her eyes.
Maddox nodded as he grabbed a folder. “I needed to plan some patrol for the next day, to make it more safe than it was today.”
“Are you worried that I will suffer in the same fate that your mom did? Is this the whole reason behind this?”
He stilled.
The words in the folder seemed nothing but blur, as her words seemed to have entered his brain. While he knew that it was true, something about hearing it in real life made his chest hurt. Even if Maddox was nothing but a kid when that happened, he had blamed a large portion of incapability to save them by those days and it had troubled him until today.
If he had participated more on trainings and was there to protect his own father — would they have lived to see their daughter-in-law flourish in her own job? He does wonder about the possibility in most days.
Feeling the tension in his body, Hani was quick to open her eyes as she faced the man before him. She easily grabbed his face and made him to face her eyes. Maddox easily settled with a single action and she was nothing but glad with that.
“Maddox.” She whispered as a smile slipped her lips. “You are a very capable Alpha. In the years you handle the pack, never did you made them suffer in any way. You protected them in the best of your ability.”
The man sighed, leaning his forehead in her shoulders. “I never wanted to fail you, Hani. To have your safety be in any sort of danger will be enough to kill me. You are my only weakness and my enemies knew that. If you suffered their wrath just to get even with me, I couldn’t handle that.”
That is why he does his best to make sure she’s safe.
Nodding her head, her hand landed on his hair as she ruffled it softly. “I understand your worries, Maddox. However, you needed to trust yourself. You have been beating yourself have these days. If you’re losing energy as the day goes on — no matter how much defense the pack has, if you’re out of stamina… who would fight them?”
Lifting his head to face her, a small frown settled on his lips. “Hani —”
“If you are not on your best condition.. who can save me?” She asked.
He did not produce an ounce of sound. For once, Maddox slowly understood her reasoning. While he was being solely focused on producing some defense for the pack… he was slowly losing himself. It was not easy to admit that he had been having some headaches and he rarely has enough stamina to compete with his warriors.
Most days, he would idle by and let them brawl on his own.
Even before, despite the time that he would spend with the planning of the post—he always have time to brawl with his men. He always sees it as a way to determine his strength.
A smile slipped in Hani’s face when she noticed the subtle changes in his face. It seemed like he fully understood her reasoning for her words. She does worry that he had been rejecting some nutrition and rest that his body needed to function as it does now.
“How about you tell me how the patrols work, so we could work on it together on the following days?” Hani suggested as she snuggled closer to the man.
Maddox grinned, carrying her back to the back where she was quick to hug him. “That is heaven sent, sweetheart. Thank you. You always cease to amaze me.”
“I know.” Hani teased as her eyes flutter close, exhausted as she was with the day.
