Trey could not sleep that night. He knew there was someone else in the room. A presence he had been sensing ever since he stepped inside the city. It was a vague and weird presence. As a werewolf, he was used to having his senses as sharp as a blade. There was no moment in his life where everything had not hit him with high clarity. Sounds that people make, smells all over the city, the world revolved around him in high definition. And he was used to it.
But this one presence….
Trey could not make out what it was. The smell was not strong, but it lingered. It somehow made him feel nostalgic, like a lost childhood memory. As if he had known the smell deep inside his bones. Yet he still could not tell what it was.
He kept on trying to sniff out the smell, but he could not pin out the smell owner. This frustrated him so.
Until he smelt it again at night. He was just about to take a couple of hours of sleep before his big mission tomorrow. The smell suddenly struck his nose. It even made his spine shivered.
What the hell is this smell?
When he opened the window, he sniffed the air again. He tried to find the smell. And still, he could not find it. The smell was gone in an instant. Feeling like he had lost his senses, he shook his head and massaged his head. He needed to get himself together. Tomorrow, his beta and omega, Ryan and Mor, would need him at his best game. There would be no room for mistakes. Not when his pack had become so thin and his father had made his moves.
He vowed he would succeed in tomorrow’s mission.
But right then, he needed sleep. After he took off all of his blades, he took off his clothes. Another thing he was used to was to sleeping naked. Honestly, he could not understand why people would sleep with clothes on. Don’t they ever feel hot? Is it not uncomfortable?
He blew out the candle on the table and hid one dagger under his pillow. Then he tucked himself in and in the darkened room, he tried to sleep.
People say sleeping is easy. Just close your eyes and your subconscious would take over. For werewolves, however, it is a bit harder. Since they have sensitive hearing, a single whisper could make them alert in an instant despite being in a deep slumber beforehand.
It was only after a few minutes of silence that he heard it.
BADUMP.
It was a very faint sound. Immediately, Trey thought of assassins. Since he was a child, he has gotten used to dealing with assassins. Especially when his own father had sent multiple assassins to ‘train’ him.
He was only eleven years old when an assassin first sneaked into his room. It took him three minutes to pull out the assassin’s heart.
As an alpha, he had a special power blessed by the Moon Goddess. He could make people follow whatever he told them to. His words could make someone stop whatever they are doing, or start dancing once he said it.
Funny, right?
He was already an alpha. So, other werewolves would have to obey him. And the Moon Goddess gave him another ability to make people unable to reject his whims. When people found out about his ability, they usually wondered how Trey did not become a spoiled brat. After all, he could make anyone do his biddings.
Apparently, his power did not work on superior alphas than him… such as his father. And his father, Javier, made it clear to him that fact. That his father was stronger, more powerful, more superior. When he remembered all the things his father had done to him… his blood boiled.
The moment he decided to go rogue and made his own pack was the best decision in his life. But knowing how his father was, he could not stay still while his father further dragged the clan he grew up with into the darkness. That was why he was in the City of Corpses. Why his mission tomorrow needed to succeed.
So, for the assassin that had sneaked into his room that night, he would make sure that the assassin learned his lesson. Trey immediately concluded that the assassin was sent by his father. Who else would have done such a thing?
At least this time, his father truly wanted his death. Is that why I could not sense the assassin before? It would make sense to think that his father hired a better assassin than the ones he used to send to Trey. Perhaps an assassin who could control his heartbeat and breathing. Because other than that one heartbeat, he could not hear anything anymore.
This might be hard.
He stayed still for quite some time. Waiting for the assassin to make his move.
Weird.
He actually sensed that weird presence again. Trey wanted to sniff it, but he held back. He instead pretended he was asleep.
The next thing he could feel was the assassin's lightweight shifting on top of him.
Shit. This assassin is really good.
There was no sound. No heartbeat, no breathing. No sound of footsteps. No creaking sound from the bed.
The assassin pinned his knees to Trey’s arms, locking him to the bed. And in an instant, he felt a tip of a blade on his neck.
I didn’t even hear the sound of the blade!
He knew he only had seconds to open his eyes and made the assassin stop. He flashed open his eyes and…
"Don't mov–"
… he could not move.
Neither did she.
She! The assassin was a her. And she is f*****g naked!
But what made his bones shiver and his heart went wild at that moment was her emerald eyes.
A word was shouted deep inside him. His wolf shouted the same word repeatedly.
‘MATE!’
Trey took in all of her. f**k, she was extremely pretty. With red flowing hair to her hips, green clear eyes, rosy cheeks with a few freckles, and plump red lips. And Goddess, her body ….
Thanks to his top night vision, he could see a glimpse of pink on her chest between strands of her hair. Perhaps it was her beauty. Or perhaps it was the mating bond. But he could not stop his manhood from being hard. And as soon as that, he realized their skins were only separated by a thin sheet of a blanket. They were both naked and mated. In a normal circumstance, two mated couples would have surrendered to their desires and ravaged the bed.
Unfortunately, this time one was going to murder the other.
And she seemed to want to reject him.
“No…,” she breathed. “It can’t be….”
Before Trey could stop her, she had struck him in the head with the hilt of the dagger. Trey groaned in pain as he felt blood started trickling down the side of his face. Then, in an instant, the weight on top of him disappeared. He forcefully opened his eyes. He did not want to lose her yet.
But he could not see her anywhere. Luckily, her smell had been imprinted inside him at the moment their eyes made contact. He sniffed the air and followed her smell.
Truthfully, he did not know what he would say or do when he caught up to her. He just… did not want to lose her. Yet she seemed hellbent on disappearing from him. She jumped out of the building and ran through the mist at the moment Trey barged into her room.
The last thing he saw of her was her emerald eyes looking straight at him with so much anger.
“Wait–“
Again, the assassin ignored Trey as she ran through the mist of the night.
“My power did not work on her,” he breathed to the night air as the mist has covered the silhouette of the red-haired girl.
