Chapter Seven

"There is really no need for you to stay, you know. It's not like you can do anything for her anyways." "I want to stay." "I'm telling you that you don't need too. I'm here with her." "What? Am I not allowed to be worried about my friend?" "Friend? Look, just because you stood up for her one time doesn't make you her friend." The voices sounded a bit far away and a little distorted. My eyes felt heavy as I come in and out of consciousness. It was like my body didn't want to respond. Pain shot through me as I attempted to raise my hand and the voices were getting louder and more defined. "Look, I'm not leaving until I know she's alright, besides, the nurse isn't even here. I think I should wait with you until she comes." Malikai's voice was calm as if he was dealing with an unruly child. That child being Calen, who sounded downright irritated. The fact that Malikai was even here for me left me in shock. He even called me his friend. It wasn't exactly what I wanted to hear but I'll take anything I could get. Happiness still swelled inside me. "The next class already started, shouldn't you be more worried about that?" "You're not going to class? Why should I?" Desperately trying to open my heavy eyelids I so badly wanted to stop this argument between them and tell them both to get lost. They were both beginning to get on my nerves with all this back and forth bickering. Honestly, I didn't see what the big deal was in just letting the guy stay. But I knew Calen and I knew his feelings towards my crush. I still didn't understand his dislike of him however.  Trying one more time to lift my hand, as pain shot through me a second time, I hear a door being opened. Just then a coolness swirled in my bloodstream and the pain ebbed away.  "Are you awake?" Calen's whispered voice was next to my ear as I realized he had placed his hand onto mine.  "She's awake?" Malikai asked but Calen ignored him. "And what do we have here?" A strong female's voice asked. Malikai jumped in to explain what happened in the gym and as he did I felt the tightness of my hand. This time succeeding in opening my eyes just a c***k my view landed on Calen's annoyed face as he stared next to him. My vision was blurred and the pure whiteness of the room was to much to take in.  "Well, you both don't need to be here. So please go back to class. I'll look after the girl."  Just then a blurred figure came to my other side and leaned down. "Get better soon." He stood back up and started to leave, then stopped. "Aren't you coming?" Malikai sounded a bit protrude.          "What, are you my babysitter now?" Calen snapped at him.          All I hear was a loud sigh that followed that statement.          I hear the door shut and all was quiet. Another deep sigh rent the air and I knew it was Calen calming himself down. I tried to speak but I was only able to mumble. I watched as he turned back to me and leaned over. "Hey, not yet. You still need to heal. I'll be back for you later. Promise."          My body once again felt tired. A warm sensation overwhelmed me like a thick comfortable blanket and right before I fell into another dreamless sleep I felt a slight gentle pressure on my forehead as blackness took over.                             *********************              Something woke me up. I didn't know what did but the feeling wasn't pleasant. Jerking awake I quickly look around me. At first I was disoriented and confused. As the seconds passed I remembered that I was still in the infirmary. It was quiet. I slowly sat up and felt sore in all the places I was previously burned. Quickly checking my injuries I realized I didn't have none. Frowning, I see red marks where they used to be as if they were already healed for days.          It was still light out but I could tell the sun was beginning to set. Looking around for the first time I see that I was alone in the room. Seems the nurse left again. The clock on the wall stated it was just past six in the evening and my eyes bugged out.          "Holy crap! Did I really sleep for nine hours?!" I went to get off the bed when I felt a bit dizzy. Sitting back down I clutched my head to stop the spinning that was going on inside my brain.           A sudden scream pierced inside the hallway making my entire body freeze up. I go to get back up again when another scream let out, but this time by someone else. Just as I was going to take a step a dense pressure fell around, making me nearly fall to my knees and darkness shadowed the room.           Steadying myself, I quickly look out the window. I didn't understand what was happening. Outside something was covering the grounds of the school. It came from the sky and wrapped around like a giant veil. It was a dark grey and barely could see out of it. It cast the grounds in a eerie darkness, like a film covering the sun.           Just when the veil touched the ground I watched as big black blobs formed and dropped to the ground with a spat all over the field. Then they formed into shapes that I didn't recognize at all. Four legged creatures that crawled like spiders started heading to the school. I began to panic and rushed to the door prying it open. Stepping out into the hallway I came to a sudden stop.          There wasn't really anything that presented itself, just an empty hallway. But there was this sinister feeling that left me feeling cold and trembling. I could feel it. A sense of danger I have never felt before. As if my senses were on high alert my vision zoomed in down the hall at the right that turned into another hallway. Something was there. Waiting. I could feel, as if whatever it was, was staring right at me.          Goosebumps raked all over my body and all the hairs on my arms and neck stood up in alarm. Slowly taking a step back my breathing became heavy with my heart racing hard against my chest. If possible the hallway became a bit darker, like a blackness looming higher on the walls around me. Not waiting another second I quickly turn back around and slam the door shut of the infirmary just as something hit it on the other side, hard.           My breathing was starting to escalate, my heart pounding harder into my chest causing pain to shoot through me. It was so loud in my ears that at first I didn't hear the sounds. My entire body stood still as low scratching noises slowly raked down the door on the other side. I tried to not make a single sound as I just stood there completely frozen. Hoping whatever the hell was on the other side would just go away.          The scratching suddenly stopped. When the noise didn't come back I nearly breathed out in relief letting my guard down just for a second, then out of nowhere something slammed against the door causing it to shudder and creak loudly. I jumped, letting out a surprised scream, backing as far away as I could from the door.          As if, whoever or whatever it was, were driven to get in, slammed against the door harder and harder each time. The wood started cracking and breaking around the edges leaving me feeling terrified. I didn't know what to do as I just stood there, my mind completely going blank.          Then it finally broke through and what I saw before me tore a piercing scream from my lips.
