Blaze
I stood by the entrance of the cave, looking at the horizon, my thoughts always going to the same thing. The sun setting behind the mountains and the cool air hitting my face. Since I turned eighteen, I thought I would find my mate. My dragon had been feeling uneasy for almost three years and I didn’t know why.
Having a mate would be a great deal, but none of the women here were. They was always something missing in them, and I was about to turn twenty one already. I wondered where could she be then? These feelings are so frustrating and infuriating.
Her faint scent of lavender was hitting me, but she was nowhere to be found. Not even shifting into my dragon and flying through lands helped me find her. Why can I smell her, but can't find her, argh!!
“Penny for your thoughts?” My mother asked as she stood right next to me.
“Mother, where is my mate?” I asked, just rhetorically, but she looked at me with a sympathetic smile.
“She’s not here, son. She’s gone,” she said with a sad voice, putting her hands on my shoulder. She walked inside the cave, deep in thoughts without telling me where she was and I knew I had to find her. I have never seen her, but I am sure she has lived here, I can sense it.
As I was about to shift once again to look for her, my father stopped me.
“Where are you going?” he asked, walking towards me.
“Father, I have to find her. I know she’s out there somewhere, and I have to bring her back to me,” I replied, frustrated, a growl escaping my throat as my father just stood there, looking at me with an unimpressed stare.
He gestured for me to shift and follow him. I didn’t waste time, maybe he knows something or just a flight to relax. I loved shifting. My dragon was big and strong, a mixture of red and white colors on my body. These features made me look rare. The only dragon in the mountains to have fire and ice powers.
My scales shine like glass and the spikes on the back of my head were standing erect, so any enemy that came close didn’t stand a chance if they came. My teeth were big and sharp, ready to break anything apart.
My father had turned back into his fire dragon, thanks to my mother who warmed his heart and our whole land, he was not the fire dragon he had turned to before. He couldn’t be more grateful for it, love changed him for the better.
We took off and I could feel the air under my body as we kept flying, an amazing and relaxing feeling. I realized we were heading towards Gargolian and I wondered, what was the purpose of us coming over? I haven’t been here in a while.
We landed in loud thumps on the ground, shifting back and walking towards the entrance of the castle, where their guards were standing.
“We came to see Godric and Mirabel. Urgent business,” he stated, and the guards nodded, letting us in.
The maiden led us to the throne room, where Godric was sitting, looking worried and tired while he rubbed his temple. I wondered why. Mirabel was trying to soothe it with massage and warm towels, and we waited until they were able to turn their attention towards us.
“It is a pleasure seeing you here, Egan. How have you been?” Mirabel greeted my father with a hug She turned to see me and a smile appeared on her face.
“Is that little Blaze? You have grown into a handsome young man.”
“Thank you, your highness,” I said, bowing my head.
“Oh, please. Call me by my name,” she said with so much love and I nodded, my heart beating fast. There was that scent again, and I started sniffing the air. It was stronger than before, but still not strong enough.
My dragon was roaring inside of me.
“You are smelling her, aren’t you?” Godric finally spoke, noticing my behavior and my scarlet red eyes glowed brighter than the gem under the sun. I wasn’t sure what he was talking about and I felt cold shivers run down my spine.
“I don’t know what do you mean?”
“Idalia. She is your mate and that is why you can sense and smell her. Unfortunately she left fifteen years ago, but we don’t know where,” Mirabel said with sadness in her voice and I was surprised. I am a gargoyle’s mate. Is that even normal?
“It is normal, son. Your mother is human and I am a dragon. And Stella, our royal gargoyle mated a human, so it is possible,” father said, reading my mind and I couldn’t take it, so I walked out and tried to get some fresh air to clear my mind. I'm closer to her but so far anyway.
“Are you okay, son?” Father asked as he stood behind me, with worry in his eyes.
“I need to find her. Where is she?”
“She’s probably in the human world. You have been looking around and haven’t found her, so that is probably where she went,” father said. I didn’t hear the rest, too many contradictory feelings inside me. I roared and shifted to my dragon, flying away and trying to find the portal everyone has been talking about for years.
I was going to find her, even if it took me forever, and I would bring her back. I landed on the cliff, and looked down at the ocean. The furious waves were the perfect moment for me to open it.
It has worked for the royal gargoyles before, so I would try it. It was driving me crazy and I needed to find answers. Just as I dropped myself from the edge of the cliff, I could see the cloud of smoke appearing at the bottom and it opened on me.
As I was reaching the portal, I shifted to my human side and I felt on the ground, groaning at the sudden thump.
Here I was, and the scent was stronger, guiding me to her. I didn’t waste time and I almost ran towards my mate.
I tried to act as normal as I could. The human world could be strange and they reek of evil and depravity. But I ignored that and kept going until I found the building she might be at.
“I am coming for you, my beautiful mate. And I will finally see who you are,” I said, full of excitement and curiosity. I snuck in her home through an open window. Isn’t she afraid that someone would enter just like I did?
I looked at her and she indeed looked beautiful. Her blonde hair and her small body lying peacefully in that bed, and I couldn’t wait to see her awake, she looked perfect. I could hear a small growl coming from her and I assumed it was her gargoyle knowing I was here.
As she stirred awake, I hid in the shadows, admiring everything on her, and I waited for the right moment to appear in front of her.
