Comfort

Idalia    I was silent the whole ride to the mountains. Blaze knew how I was feeling and I was glad he didn’t say a word, letting me be on my own thoughts. A silent tear fell down my cheeks and the slow beating of his heart was letting me know he was feeling my sadness.     “I am sorry for disappointing you, dad,” I whispered as I held onto Blaze’s scales while he gracefully conquered the sky.     “You’ll be fine, beautiful. You’re not alone,” he finally spoke. I leaned against his body, feeling his faint breathing through his hard skin. As I kept hearing his heartbeat, I didn’t realize I had fallen asleep until I felt a soft thump, and that is when I knew we had arrived.     The smell of flowers and wet dirt after the rain invaded my nostrils as my eyes fluttered open. The mountains are just as I remembered the last time I was here. It looked like Spring was here all year long.    It felt warm and I couldn’t be any happier to be in such an amazing place. Even with the snow, it was just as beautiful.     Blaze laid on the ground to let me get off. I looked at him and his scarlet eyes were looking at me as I caressed his ears, which he had put back in submission.    “You really are a beautiful creature,” I said and he purred like a kitten, closing his eyes and mesmerizing me with his movements.    He stretched his majestic wings and with them, pulled me against his snout. I didn’t know what came over me, but I put my forehead against it and it was such a great feeling.     Opening my eyes, I noticed I was too close to him and I pulled back, heat creeping up my cheeks.    Blaze shifted back to his human form, leading me inside the cave. The atmosphere was lively, and I missed being here, visiting my friends. As we looked around, I could see Egan helping a few children get ready for dinner and the feeling overwhelmed me.     He was my best friend and I have missed him so much. Tears streamed down my cheeks and he must have felt my emotions as he lifted his head and stood there frozen.    “Hello, Egan,” I almost whispered, since I couldn’t get my voice to work.     “Oh pretty little one,” he said, heading towards us and taking me in his arms in a teddy bear hug. Well, dragon hug and he was taking my breath away, literally.    “You have grown so much, and you are as beautiful as ever,” he said, cupping my cheeks and kissing my forehead, giving me that fatherly love I will never get from my own father.     “I missed you so much, Egan,” I cried on his chest as he rubbed my back soothingly.    “I have missed you too, princess. I am glad you are back and wait until April sees you, she will be happy.”    Wiping my tears away, I smiled and nodded. I couldn’t wait to see her again. He grabbed my hand and led me inside while Blaze walked behind me. I had forgotten all about my life in the human world in an instant when I felt the love and the way they missed me here.     “Idalia!” April called, hurrying towards me with a smile on her face, and she wrapped her arms around me as some tears fell from her eyes while her heart beat fast. I could definitely hear it.     “Welcome back, lovely girl! We have missed you a lot. Come on, let’s eat.”    Everyone was getting ready to eat and I was starving, so I joined them. I sat next to April and Blaze sat on the other side of the table, right in front of me. His eyes were boring into me and I was feeling flushed.    “Well, this is not a normal dinner. It has turned into a celebration for Idalia’s return,” Egan said and everyone on the flock cheered.    “I am sure your parents are happy you’re back after being gone for so long.”    My smile faded when he mentioned my parents.    “Father, let’s not talk about them at the moment. It is a very sensitive issue,” Blaze said and I looked at him while I mouthed a thank you.     “And today marks two years since Ulric and Alianor passed away, so we are going to take a moment of silence for them.”    I was shocked to hear about their passing. So much has happened since I was gone and I felt like I missed half of my life here. Not that I regret being gone, but I was needed here and had disappointed my father, and now my mother wouldn’t even defend me, so she was on his side instead of mine.    Can’t say I blamed her. Her own daughter had abandoned everything and everyone, and she had selfishly left. I excused myself after dinner was over and walked outside, the sun setting on the horizon and I hugged myself, not from being cold, but from being emotional.    “What’s on your mind?” Blaze asked, scaring me out of my thoughts.     “Not much, I thought you could read my mind, though,” I replied with a bit of a snark on my voice. I didn’t mean for it to come out that way, but I had so many emotions inside of me.    “Sometimes it’s good to give someone their privacy.”    “Well, if you want to give me my privacy, then you shouldn't have come out here. There is a reason why I left the cave.”     He stood behind me, his body really close to mine as I sucked in a deep breath as I moved away from him.      “I am sorry for leaving the table like that. They had welcomed me back, which is not what I could say about my parents.”    Thora was purring and whining inside of me, feeling my pain and Blaze took me in his arms, making me end up in a wave of tears as I held onto him with my all.    He was comforting me and I knew he would always be there to make me feel better. His dragon was warming me and Thora up, and for a moment there, I felt safe and loved.
