I awoke to a pristine white ceiling overhead. As my vision cleared, I saw my father seated nearby, head slouched in light sleep. "You're awake!" Elena's voice came from my right, a note of relief evident in her tone.
"I'll call the doctor," Elena announced. Her voice roused my dad, who, upon seeing me conscious, displayed a clear expression of relief. I attempted to speak, but my voice was raspy and weak. Gratefully, I accepted the glass of water handed to me by my father.
"Why do I feel so sore?" I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper.
There was a brief silence, punctuated only by the distant hum of hospital machinery. My dad's eyes were filled with concern, and Elena's mirrored his anxiety.
"Has there been any sign of her wolf?" Elena inquired, her voice urgent.
I looked between her and the doctor, confusion clear on my face.
"Luna Elena," the doctor began with a hint of impatience, "as I mentioned earlier, her health hasn't improved. There's no sign that she will regain her wolf." The doctor's voice trailed off.
"What?!" I exclaimed, trying to process the information. "Tell me what happened to my wolf. Why am I in so much more pain than usual?"
The doctor took a deep breath. "The wolfbane injection was administered to take your life. Unfortunately, it has destroyed your wolf's power. You are no longer a shifter." Grief engulfed me as the weight of the revelation settled in.
"No, this can't be true," I whispered, a deep sense of emptiness overwhelming me. I tried to communicate mentally, calling out for Jane, but there was only silence. Tears blurred my vision as Elena placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. My father's gaze was heavy with sorrow. Both of them sat beside me, offering solace in their presence. Their sympathetic glances, which only deepened the void of pain within me, punctuated the entrance of Mac and Drake.
"Where is Alpha Silas?" My voice was weak, but the urgency was palpable. The void left by the absence of my wolf weighed on my heart.
"Silas went to inspect the hybrids. He should be back soon," Elena informed me. No sooner had she finished speaking than Alpha Silas appeared.
"Thank God you're okay, Yuri," Alpha Silas began, relief evident in his voice. However, his enthusiasm faded the moment he met my tear-filled eyes.
"Thank you for checking on me, Alpha Silas," I said, managing a faint smile.
"How are things with the hybrids?" I inquired. Alpha Silas regarded me thoughtfully before exhaling deeply.
"You shouldn't concern yourself with hybrids. Drake and I are handling the situation," he responded. "Right now, your focus should be on resting and recovering." I nodded, acutely feeling the twin pains of my aching body and the void left by my missing wolf. The sensation of lying there, bereft and vulnerable, was agonizing.
"Now that I no longer have a wolf, Alpha Silas," I began hesitantly, "who do you plan to appoint as the Beta of the Pack?" I could sense his discomfort, so I asked directly. The unspoken questions between us had been a source of tension.
"Please, no more silence or sympathetic gestures. They're not helping," I said, my voice tinged with frustration. "If you're undecided, I have someone in mind."
"In my eyes, you remain the Beta of my Pack," Alpha Silas declared, causing me to look up in surprise. "Even without your wolf, you possess a strength that is unmatched, Yuri."
"Alpha Silas, your kindness is overwhelming, but you know well that the Pack Elders will soon pressure you to choose a new Beta, especially once word spreads I'm no longer a wolf shifter," I retorted, wiping away a fresh stream of tears.
"Yuri," my dad interjected, "you're not just a mere human. Remember, you're a hybrid with dragon blood coursing through your veins. This gives you a resilience and power beyond what most humans can withstand."
Our conversation was abruptly interrupted by a guard at the doorway. "Alpha Silas, we have a problem. The wolf hybrids are becoming feral. The Pack is in grave danger."
