I walked inside the dimly lit bar and felt the tension in the air as I looked around for familiar faces. I was still feeling the aftermath from the disastrous action at Moretti's party. Michael was seated at a corner table, looking concerned as I looked at him.
"Natalia," he greeted, rising to meet me. "How are you holding up?"
I forced a smile, attempting to get rid of the weariness that was holding me down. "I've been better. Any new leads?"
Michael shook his head, worry visible in his eyes. "Not yet. The chief is furious about the failed operation. We need to be more careful."
I let out a sigh and sank into the chair across from him. "I am aware."
Before Michael could reply, Killian entered the bar through the open door. His towering build and authoritative manner commanded attention from the moment he arrived. Our eyes locked and my heart skipped a beat, and I hastily averted my gaze.
Michael uttered the sarcastic phrase, "Well, if it is not the man of the hour."
Ignoring the remark, Killian approached our table and took a seat. He looked at me. "Can we all talk now?"
I leaned back in my chair and crossed my arms.
"About the operation," Killian answered in a grave manner. "And speaking of Moretti. We cannot allow what transpired previously to occur again."
A wave of frustration washed over me. "You believe I am unaware of that? We are exerting every effort possible."
"Are you?" Killian stared me down with a challenge in his eyes. "Because it seems to me like you are letting your emotions get in the way."
I clinched my jaw, getting angry. "You have no idea what I am dealing with."
"Then educate me," Killian retorted. "Because all I see is a detective who is too close to the case to see clearly."
Michael attempted to defuse the situation by clearing his throat. "Alright, let us all step back now. Here, we are on the same side."
Taking a deep breath, I forced myself to relax. "All right. Killian, what are your suggestions?
With a somewhat softened look, he leaned forward. "We need to be smarter. Moretti knows we're onto him, and he's not going to make it easy for us. We must carefully organize our actions and obtain more intelligence."
I gave a nod, feeling a little less strain in my shoulders. "I concur. However, where should we begin?"
Killian took out a little notebook and opened it. "I have a contact who might be able to help us. He was once one of Moretti's associates, but he's gone underground. He might be able to provide us with the information we require if we can locate him."
Michael's eyebrow went up. "And you trust this guy?"
Killian gave a shrug. "As much as I can't trust anyone in this line of work. He has no affection for Moretti, that much is clear."
I looked at Killian's face, trying to find any hint of dishonesty. I knew he shared my desire to bring Moretti down, despite our convoluted past. "All right. Come on, let us do it. However, caution is required."
"Yes," Killian replied. "I will arrange for us to meet. In the meantime, we should lay low and avoid drawing any more attention."
Michael drank his drink and nodded. "Sounds like a plan. Let's regroup tomorrow and go over the details."
I felt a range of emotions swirl inside me as we left the bar. Although Killian's presence was a continual distraction, I knew I had to maintain my focus. It was challenging to maintain professionalism because of our common past and unresolved emotions.
Outside, the night air was chill and clean. With his hands stuffed in his pockets, Killian strolled next to me. "You know, we make a good team when we are not at each other's throats," he said.
I gave him a quick glance while grinning a little. "Yeah, well, don't get used to that. We still have a long way to go."
He gave a very little laugh. "Fair enough. For what it is worth, Natalia, I do respect you. More than you think."
My heart warmed by his words, but I brushed the emotion away. "Thanks, Killian."
I made my way back to my flat, and the next day, Michael and I met Killian at a remote spot outside of town. It was a deserted warehouse, far from curious observers. We went over our plan in depth, going over each potential outcome.
Spreading a map across the hood of his car, Killian noted, "Okay, here's the deal." "At midnight, my contact will be here. We'll need to be on high alert, in case Moretti's men show up."
I looked at the map and nodded. "And you are sure he can be trusted?"
Killian looked back at me with a serious expression. "As certain as possible. However, we need to be prepared for anything."
Michael gazed at his watch. "We've got a few hours to kill. Let's make sure we have all our bases covered."
Night fell, and the only sound in the pitch-black, silent warehouse was the sporadic rustle of leaves in the breeze.
In the distance, a lone man materialized at precisely midnight. Michael and I observed as the guy approached the warehouse after Killian gave us a signal.
"That's him," Killian muttered to himself. "Stay sharp."
With cautious eyes and a worn face, the figure emerged into the low light. He glanced around anxiously before coming up to Killian.
"You are running late," Killian replied quietly.
"Had to make sure I was not being followed," the man answered. "You got the p*****t?"
The man swiftly pocketed the tiny envelope that Killian had given him. "Alright, what do you have for us?"
The man lowered his voice and looked around. "Moretti has a large shipment scheduled for next week. He's using a new route, one that even his closest associates don't know about. You will have enough proof to defeat him if you can intercept it."
My heart pounded with excitement. "Where is the shipment going?"
The man wavered, his gaze flitting tensely. "I am not sure where it is precisely. However, I can direct you. Within the industrial district is a warehouse. There is been sightings of Moretti's men lately. It is a wise place to begin.
With a resolute gaze, Killian nodded. "We'll check it out. Thanks for the info."
As the man turned to walk away, Killian caught hold of his arm. "And remember, if you double-cross us, you will regret it."
With a swift nod, the man moved away. " I wish you good luck."
I turned to face Killian as he vanished into the night. "This might be the one. Perhaps now at last, we have him."
He gave a nod, a little smile flashing across his lips. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves."
Michael joined us. "All right, let us return and begin making plans. We need to intercept a package."
We headed back toward the city, and I was filled with fresh purpose. Though the road ahead remained unclear, I felt for the first time in a long time that we actually had a chance to defeat Moretti. And I knew that with Killian at my side, we could get beyond any challenge.
