“Did you get to talk to him?” Mary stopped and looked over at Annie. A look of almost terror began to cover her face as she began striking her fists against her legs. Annie hugged her sister to her. “It’s ok, Mary,” she said. “Just tell him what you know. It will be alright.” “I didn’t talk to him that first night,” Mary said softly, almost as if she was reciting a tale. “But he called for me the next day. After they took him over to the jail.” “He called for you?” “Yes, he told his guards that I had nursed for him in the past, and that he needed me to give him a bath. I never had done no such thing, but I knew he had a reason for saying that, so I went and got a towel and a basin of hot water and a wash cloth, and took them over to the jail.” “And you gave him a bath?” “Yes.
