CHAPTER 1

Eleanor POV I heard a round of applause after I finished with the presentation. We’re in the middle of a meeting, and I was presenting my latest idea for the sportswear division. They seemed to agree with me. My stepdad was the owner of a fashion company named “The W”. It’s the abbreviation of our family surname Wright. I was working my ass off for this new collection. I think dad purposedly assigned me to do this job so that he could enjoy seeing me fail. Ha! Let me show you what I was capable of. I watched his expression, and then we both smiled as our eyes met. “Eleanor, meet me in the office after this.” He said, then left the room before us all. My feet felt light as I made my way to his office. My smile spreads even wider than when I was in that meeting room. Yes, finally! He could see me as his daughter. I can also make him proud, unlike my useless brother, Everett. I might not be blood-related to him, but I was more useful than his real son. I sighed deeply. This day finally came to me. The day he could trust this company to me. I knocked twice, and then I heard his voice allowing me to come in. Smile suddenly dropped from my face as soon as I saw my stepbrother also there inside the room. He was sitting on the opposite side of dad. Oh Gosh. Have I mentioned how much I despise him? Moreover, when he flashed an idiotic smile at me like right now. It made me want to punch him right in his nose. “Ah, you’re here. Come here! I have something important to tell you.” Dad said, pointing towards the empty seat in front of him. “Ahh…Eleanor. You looked even more beautiful day by day. How about we hang out together and have some fun tonight? Hmmm?” My dumbass brother said while leaning closer towards me. Yes. Other than being totally useless in the company, he was also the biggest flirt here. He dated almost all the woman employees here. Well, his look is not bad. If only he had more content inside his brain other than s*x. I would kill him if he dared to lie his dirty hand on me. I blew out a breath and decided to just let this one go because I didn’t want to ruin the good mood from earlier. “Do you like the new concept that I made?” I asked dad, switching the topic. “You did well, but not good enough for me.” He said, making me frown. He didn’t say anything while I was doing the presentation earlier. I had no idea which part he disliked. “What’s with the shocked expression? Do you expect me to praise you for that?” Dad scoffed mockingly at me. “Even an amateur could come up with the same idea. Do you have any idea how big money we have to spend if we proceed with your idea?” He added. I felt like I was being stabbed with a knife right on my chest. Did he just say that I was an amateur? “D-dad...But we had enough profit from the last season?” I said a bit stammering, and dad raised his hand to stop me. “Eleanor… Stop trying to overstep your brother. Business is for a man to run.” Dad said, and my eyes stung. Tears flew down after hearing another insult from him. Everett tapped my shoulder as if he was pitying me, but it only doubled my anger. I shoved his hand away because I knew his real intention was to mock me. “So what do you want me to do then? I did everything for this company, and I am also your daughter! But you never treat me like one.” I stated. My voice was strained. “I am having enough of your tantrum, Eleanor. Now, if you really want me to love you as my child, I have a favor to ask.” He simply answered me. I sniffed my tears. This is quite unexpected. My dad had never asked for my help before. The thought of him needs me instantly boost my confidence a bit. “What is it?” I forced a smile at him.  “I’ve already made a deal with my friend, Louis Castro.” Dad said, and I frowned at him. “What deal?” I suddenly had a bad feeling about this. “Don’t ask too much. Just come to this place tonight at ten.” He said, sliding a small piece of paper in front of me. Another bead of tears rolled down again to my cheek. He couldn’t possibly just send me to entertain his friends, right? No, Eleanor… You must be mistaken. I slammed both my palms into the table. “What’s with all this nonsense, dad!? Are you selling me to your friend now?” I said, my voice hoarse due to crying. I couldn’t contain my anger anymore. Dad’s eyes flashed anger inside as he stood up to face me. “You’re not in a position to choose, Eleanor! He’s going to inject a large sum of money into our company—” dad circled the table until he stood in front of me and then squeezed the side of my arms. It was actually hurting me. “You want me to love you, huh? Then deal with this! Everett will pick you up tonight and take you there.” I fell to the floor after he released his grip on my arm. My body was shaking, but I still brought myself to stand up and took a step to leave the room. ************* It was nine o clock, and I still couldn’t believe that I was actually preparing myself to see the man tonight. I knew that my step-parents never loved me. I was only a tool for them to gain more money. My real parents abandoned me when I was six because they suffered financially and couldn’t afford to raise a child. I still remember that day my step-parents walked into the orphanage. Willow Wright came to me and spoke to me softly while smiling. At first, I thought that I’d found a family who could love me, but I was wrong. “What’s your name, kid? Let’s go buy some ice cream.” He said, patting my head. I might be six, but I am not stupid. I knew that he had already signed the papers to adopt me. Later I find out that his wife just had a miscarriage when she was pregnant with the second child, Everett’s sister. His wife was crushed after losing the baby, so they decided to adopt a child. That lucky child turns out to be me. Martha Wright, my step-mom, loved me unconditionally. Maybe even more than she loved Everett. She was ecstatic that day Dad brought me back to their home from the orphanage. I was a happy kid. They showered me with fancy toys and clothes until that day mom got into an accident while she was driving me to the ballet class. Ever since mom died, he changed. He stopped talking to me if it wasn’t necessary and never came to attend any parent’s meetings. I was ashamed. Other kids started to bully me because my parents never showed up at school. I was never lack of money, but I never felt loved by him anymore.
