13 He led us inside and into a small, but comfortable front room. A table and chairs stood on the left side near a counter with a sink and cutting board. Dried herbs hung from the rafters and lay about the counter. The side of the boulder stuck into the house and the surface had been chipped away over many years. In the hearth was a small cauldron that boiled away with a brackish-looking stew in its dark depths. At the back of the house was a partially opened door that led into a small bedroom with a bed and nightstand. Against the wall close beside the door was a larger cauldron, and above it hung several lines loaded with clothes and sheets. The old woman didn’t look up as we entered, but her furry companion did.
