A Friend

473 Words
"Who is this?" Annabella, with suspicion in her eyes, asked as I came charging through the inn. Nathaniel followed me slowly, looking at the few people in the dining room before taking a seat at a table closest to the door. "A friend," I said. "So, we're friends now?" Nathaniel asked as he pulled something out of his bag. "Yes," I snapped back as I turned back towards Annabella, "his name is Nathaniel." "Come with me," Annabella grabbed my arm and pulled my into the kitchen. "Do you want to kill us all?" She demanded. "Excuse me?" I asked as I tore my arm out of her grip. "He's a dealer of dark magic, Alaina," Annabella hissed, "he's as bad as the warlock." "Wrong," a voice said from behind us, making us both jump. Nathaniel was leaning against the doorway, "I don't particularly like the warlock's ways of things. He does have a name, you know." "Name?" Annabella asked. "Norrix," he said and the air seemed to chill, "of course, if you were familiar with dark magic you'd know that names have power. Power that can be used against them." "How do we use it?" Annabella asked. "Oh, you don't, darling," Nathaniel smiled and patted her head, "I will. However, I need things." "What kind of things?" Annabella said as she straightened her hair. "Dark magic things that I can't get on my own," he said as he pulled out a scroll from his pants, "ingredients for a weapon." "What are they?" I asked. Annabella gave me a sharp look before sighing and folding her arms. "Get these to me," he handed me the scroll and I took it and unrolled it. There was a hefty list of ingredients. "All of those?" Annabella asked as she read over my shoulder. "Yes, exact proportions. No more, no less." "Do you know what all of these are?" I asked Annabella as we read over the strange words. "Yes," she said as she took the scroll from me, "they're rare but I could find them easily enough." "Then get to it," Nathaniel said as he turned back to the dining room. "I don't trust him," Annabella said. "Well, he can help," I said. "With getting rid of the warlock?" She asked, "That I don't know," I said we headed out of the inn, "but he can help us get Felix back." "Alaina," Annabella grabbed my arm and spun me towards her, "I'm not bringing my son back to an unnatural life. They're never the same." "He never died, Annabella," I told her as Jordan came up to us. "What?" Annabella asked as I climbed onto the dragon. "That's why we need Nathaniel," I told her as I helped her onto Jordan. "I'm not sure about this," Annabella said. "Yes, but desperate times call for desperate measures."
