Doing Mission

On top of a roof in one of the buildings in a city, a hero with a blue-green costume can be seen. He is following behind a cat quietly as he is afraid that he will scare the cat.

“That’s the right cat. White fur with black tails and paws like wearing a glove. Not to mention that the necklace is the same as the one in the picture. Okay, I’ll catch it now.”

The name of the hero that looked very comical right now is Max. he is taking a mission to catch a pet cat that has gone missing. Max immediately took this job when he saw that the reward money is $2,000.

“Hup! There you go, eh, wait!”

Max jumped and caught the cat, but he didn’t realize that there’s no more roof under his feet, so he is freefalling to the ground while hugging the cat. It was fortunate enough that he could command the wind to make a cushion and landed safely on the ground.

“Fiuh. You little creature, you almost killed us both.”

“Meow.”

Max tried to complain to the cat, but it was useless as the cat couldn’t speak human language. So finally, he has no choice but to bring the cat to the owner to complete the mission.

“Panda!”

Max wanted to laugh when he heard the cat's name, but it was suitable as the cat was coloured black and white.

“Big brother hero, thank you very much.”

“No problem. Please take care of it and don’t let it go away anymore.”

“Yeah, I will take care of him.”

After finishing the mission, Max returned to the United Heroes headquarters to make his report. After some verification process, he finally got his first earning as a hero. The money is transferred to a different account than his usual bank as the account is now under the name of Air Hero.

Looking at the transaction, Max smiled to himself. He finally managed to earn money from his dream occupation.

“I shouldn’t be happy yet. It’s only $2,000. I still need $98,000 to buy a standard computer to be used by the overseer. Not to mention I still have to rent a place to be used as the office. There’s still a long way to go.”

Finishing his job for the day, Max headed to the beauty gym and started his daily training. Not long after that, Kalina arrived there.

“Big sis!”

“Max, come over here and try this.”

Kalina brought a large suitcase, and she opened it to show Max what’s inside it.

“Do you know what is this?”

“Big sis, is this the elemental orb?”

“Yes, this is the elemental orb. Since what you’ve told me, I’ve been curious to confirm your power.”

To be honest, looking at the elemental orb in front of him, Max still has a feeling of resentment towards it. After all, it can be said that the tragedy where he loses his parents started from this object.

“You should know how to use this, right? Just put your hands on it and try to use your power like usual.”

Max put his hand on top of the elemental orb with a heavy heart. After all, he still needs to find out about his power and let go of the bygones.

Max followed Kalina’s order and tried to use his power, but there are no changes to the elemental orb.

“Max, are you sure that you’ve used your power? How come there’s no reaction from the elemental orb?”

“I don’t understand. I did what I usually do when I am using my power.”

“Hmmm, is the elemental orb faulty?”

Kalina then put her hands on top of the elemental orb, and in a few seconds, a lotus flower bloomed inside of it.

“There’s no problem with the elemental orb. It could still show my power. Max, try it again.”

Max put his hand once again, but there’s no difference from earlier, although Kalina has confirmed that the elemental orb doesn’t have any problem.

“If the elemental orb detects your wind power, it should show a typhoon inside or a green element that symbolized the wind. So why is there no effect at all?”

“I don’t even know myself.”

“Max, can we do this once again and let me record this. Then, I will ask some of my fellow teachers to see whether they have an answer to this. You’re okay with it, right?”

“Yeah, no problem.”

Once again, Max tested his power with the elemental orb that didn’t show any reaction while recorded and resumed his training. As Max continued his training, Kalina looked at the recording and still thinking about what went wrong with it.

That is all only a tiny hiccups on Max’s daily life as he continued his duty as a hero. He keeps on taking a mission every day, which netted him at least $1,000 and if he is lucky, he could take an assignment with a $2,000-$3,000 reward.

As for the D-rank mission, there aren’t many challenges that he faced. Other than finding pets or apprehending robbers that don’t have superpower, there aren’t many variations on the job that Max could take.

One week doing the mission, he is still energetic. However, after a month has passed, he realized how tedious and boring these missions are. He didn’t experience the same adrenaline rush as when he is fighting Crawley or feels satisfied after saving other people’s lives. He can only be satisfied enough by seeing the smile of the mission giver when he found their pets or their purse after catching the robber.

Just when he thinks that his dull days as a hero won’t end, he received an unexpected call from Ken.

“Hi, Ken! It is rare to see you calling me first.”

“Haha. Usually, it is you who called me because you have something to ask from me.”

“Erm, now you put it that way; I feel a bit embarrassed. But, you know, I called you not only because of that.”

“Haha. Of course, I know. I’m just joking with you. Anyway, I have a favour to ask.”

“A favour? What is it? Just tell me and don’t say it like that. We’re friends, you can ask for my help, and I’ll do it if I can.”
