IT WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MOMENT any of them had ever seen. Two people who were destined to love each other that basically broke up, had found their way back to each other. With a glimmer of hope shining through, Circe left the council castle. She had to protect her family. She had to protect the love all of her sisters and she had found.
Most importantly, she had to keep her promise to her father to protect their pack. As she made her way into the main house, she thought about her uncle Sullivan and when Blake appeared out of nowhere, she accidentally growled at him.
“Hey, I come in peace.” Blake laughed, holding his hands in the air in submission, and Circe instantly calmed down.
“I’m sorry.” She sighed as she rushed into his arms. She could just be a girl when it was just the two of them and she appreciated that he allowed her that much. Whenever anybody else was around, she had to be Circe, the alpha. It was a lot of pressure, and although she was happy to be alpha, she had to admit that it was a bigger job than she ever could have imagined.
“Ruff day?” He pretended to bark and it made her laugh as they sat down on the couch and she caught him up on what happened. He nodded and told her that her mother had already sent word of what happened. “And you say that he escaped through the portals the witch opened?” Blake frowned as Circe nodded. The rest of their family started to come into the main house, interrupting their conversation, but soon everyone was talking about the same thing.
Sullivan … There had to be a way to stop him! Silence fell and Melissa couldn’t stand it. She got up and started dinner and, without a word, her daughters quickly jumped in to help. She was glad for the help because her mind kept going to the two collars in her bag, and more importantly to when she would tell her girls about them. She didn’t want it to become public knowledge, not that her girls would tell anybody on purpose, but it was very possible that someone could let something slip and then all that work would have been for nothing.
They had dinner while the girls each told their side of what happened and everyone caught up in what happened at the pack house while the boys joked about being housemen. Melissa watched her family and realized how much she missed Frank. He would have been so proud to sit there and listen to their family. He would have been so proud to see all of them this happy.
When dinner was over, the boys offered to clean, since the girls cooked and Melissa took her coffee out to the porch. She sat down on Frank’s chair and looked up at the stars. As her mind drifted, she wondered what the moon goddess was doing and why she was allowing her creatures to run around killing each other. How could someone like Sullivan be allowed to have a mate, and why on earth did he have someone magical that could give him enough strength to harm others?
“Missing dad?” Isobel’s voice interrupted her thoughts as she leaned against the door frame and looked up. Melissa nodded. She didn’t want to tell her girls of her disturbing thoughts. A white witch should never wish harm on anybody, but she couldn’t help herself. Sullivan was just evil! The others joined them on the porch for coffee and Melissa soon found herself laughing at all of her children.
Why couldn’t they just always be this happy? At least they would have some time now. With Sullivan clearly on the run, they could have a couple of hours off before they started to go after him again. To make sure he couldn’t attack the territory, the Councillor had instructed the army to stay until after Sullivan was captured. The boys insisted on going with the girls this time around and Circe readily agreed.
They didn’t know what they could expect when they found him, so they needed to be at full strength. After everyone had gone to bed, Melissa snuck out into the forest to make the boys some protection talismans and she was back just before sunrise. They had some breakfast and left for the castle.
WILLOW WAS STILL AT OLIVIA’s side while the doctor gave her one last check-up. Her injuries were bad, but most of them were superficial and it would take time for her to completely heal, even with magic. The family was happy to hear that Olivia was being released from hospital, and she joined them in the conference room as they were all pouring over plans.
It very quickly became clear that Sullivan and Brielle were careful since Olivia couldn’t give them much information on where those two might have gone. Melissa researched Brielle’s past to see if there was any indication of a family or another coven she would go to while Willow and Olivia checked the archives for any records.
Tabatha and Isobel checked the only wolf records that were kept in the library to see if there were maybe some rogue packs that would take Sullivan in, but that was just another dead end. The only place Sullivan and Brielle would go was where they felt safe and where they had another army. Which ended up to be the main question of the day. Did Sullivan have a second army hiding somewhere? Violet joined them all at lunch after resting and they returned to the last place where Sullivan and Brielle opened a portal.
SULLIVAN WAS PACING THE CAVE and it drove Brielle insane. They had gotten away from those brats and now she needed to recharge, but she wouldn’t be able to do that with all the pacing going on!
“Can you please, please just take a damn seat!” She shouted and her voice echoed down the cave as Sullivan whipped around and growled at her. “I need to rest and your pacing is making that difficult.” She glared right back, making him sigh.
“I’m just worried that those stupid girls will find us.” He sighed and flopped down beside her while she explained for the umpteenth time that she had done every spell in the book and they would never be found. She didn’t tell him that her portal magic could be traced because she hid them behind a protection spell inside the cave. There was no way, even if those girls found the most powerful witch on earth, that they would find them!
They had just finished dinner when they heard something rustling outside in the bushes and she gripped Sullivan’s arm when he started growling. Just outside the entrance of the cave they could hear people softly talking! Those damn brats had found them!
THE GROUP OF WOLVES AND WITCHES had just jumped through the last portal and were thinking of making camp for the night. Violet looked for another portal, but she couldn’t find any signs. Unfortunately, there was also no scent in the air for them to follow, which meant they would have to find alternative ways of looking for their targets.
Walking down a hidden path, they searched for some kind of cover, but there was nothing. In the end, they had no other option but to make camp in the forest. It was late and all of them needed to rest. Maybe if Violet was rested, she would be able to find the next portal. This was really ridiculous. They were jumping from portal to portal in search of two people and there was just no damn sign of them. Circe rested her head on Blake’s lap as he leaned against a tree and chewed on a blade of grass.
“I have something to tell you but I need you to promise me that you won’t get angry first.” She sighed and he frowned before nodding.
“I promise.” His hand slipped over her abdomen and she grinned.
“I’m pregnant.” She beamed and gave it a second to sink in, but he didn’t react the way she was expecting him to! He grinned and nodded.
“I know. I heard the heartbeat.” He kissed her softly but she felt a little bit let down!
“This sucks, you know?” She frowned and he laughed.
“Why? Because you can’t keep secrets from me?” He winked.
“No, because you probably knew before I did!” She sighed and he kissed her again to shut her up. After breaking the kiss, he asked if she wanted to tell their family, but she shook her head. She didn’t want to tell anybody just yet. They might all insist that she return home before they found Sullivan and she wasn’t going to do that.
They needed to find their uncle! Melissa joined the two of them and Circe could see something was bothering her mother. She wasn’t wrong. Her mother pulled two dog collars from her bag as Circe frowned. She quickly explained in a hushed voice what they were for, and that she didn’t want anyone else to know about them. Circe was stunned! She didn’t even know there was magic that powerful and she was almost too scared to touch them.
They agreed to keep it between the three of them, and Circe was relieved to find that her mother looked much happier after their little conversation.
