SULLIVAN PACED the entrance of the cave and tried his best to stay calm, but with his enemies just around the corner, he just couldn’t! They walked right past the cave just the day before and he could hear them talking not far from where he and Brielle were hiding. He wasn’t going to feel safe until they found someone to fight with them.
It would have been better if his damn spy told him that the females were coming for him. Then he could have killed them, but nobody said a damn word and now he was the one on the run! Growing angrier by the minute, he thought of all the plans he had made over the years and how those meddlesome girls kept ruining them!
He wanted to leave during the night when they were asleep but Brielle kept telling him they shouldn’t. According to her, they were safe here for now, but she had been their friend for a long time and he was beginning to think she wasn’t on his damn side! He glared at her sleeping form and wondered how the hell she could sleep under these circumstances! A bush rustled nearby and it drew his attention as he softly growled.
Brielle touched his shoulder, making him jump. His head whipped around and he glared at her as she pressed her index finger to her lips to show him to keep quiet. He held his breath as the movement came closer to the cave entrance.
CIRCE WAS UP EARLY and wanted to have a look around. Maybe she could find tracks or something to give them an indication of where her uncle and that damn witch went, but there was nothing. She was just about to check out something she thought she had seen in the dark when Blake called her over for breakfast. She could have sworn she saw the entrance to a cave when they arrived, but she was starving.
If there was an entrance, surely it could wait until after breakfast … Everyone was up when she returned to their little camp and someone had made food and coffee. They were all discussing what to do next when Circe plopped down in front of Blake and took her plate.
“You shouldn’t be waltzing around the unknown in your condition.” Blake whispered in her ear and she burst out laughing.
“What? Are you going to become a possessive mate right now?” She grinned at him as he nodded. He was such a damn good man that she could just cuddle him up until there was nothing left! They finished breakfast and Isobel took the dishes to the river to clean while the rest of them packed up their camp. They needed to return to the last portal so that Violet could see if there were any traces of a new portal and, if not, they needed to start looking for any indication of where their uncle went.
If they didn’t jump again, it could be that he and his little wench were trying to hide in town where their scents would be hidden by others. Circe couldn’t see them hiding in the forest. Their scents would be too open. Unfortunately, Violet didn’t find any traces of a new portal, which meant they had to start searching for other clues.
SULLIVAN WAS READY to strangle his mate when lunch time rolled around and she was still refusing to leave the damn cave! They were sitting ducks and he couldn't stand it any longer!
“I’m leaving!” He turned on her and growled. “I don’t care if you come with me or not, but I can’t just sit here and wait to be captured!” He could feel his wolf pushing to the surface, but Brielle didn’t seem bothered in the least as she slowly started to pack her things.
“Yes, maybe we should split up for a while. That way we can split their silly little group in two.” She smiled as she stood up and put her pack on her back. Sullivan suddenly felt very confused. Brielle hardly ever agreed with him! Why would she agree to them splitting up right now? He stormed her and pushed her up against the side wall of the cave as his fingers tightened around her throat.
“You want to run to your friends and tell them where to find me!!” He growled as his eyes glowed in the darkness of the cave. “Why? Have you grown tired of running?! Do you really think they will take you back after everything you did to them?!” He spat at her but she wasn’t reacting with fear as he had hoped. She struggled slightly to breathe, but she had amusement written all over her face.
“If you let me go, I can explain.” She fought for air and he noticed her lips turning blue. His grip released instantly as his wolf forced him to let her go and she fell to the floor rubbing her throat.
“I will never go back to them! Do you hear me?!” Brielle jumped up. Her voice was raw with fury which surprised him. She always seemed so calm, but now her eyes flashed with anger and he took a step back. “I was simply trying to give you what you wanted. I will never leave you alone! I simply meant that I could create a bunch of portals to lead them away from here and then I could return when I was sure I had gotten rid of the group who would definitely follow me. If we are lucky, all of them follow the damn portals!” She sighed and a smile started to form on his face. She was going to lead them away from him. If she willingly left, he might be able to get away, and if they caught her, at least he would have gotten away. Yeah, that plan was going to work for him. All he had to do was wait for them to follow her.
THE GROUP walked into town feeling a little obvious. They didn’t arrive with a car and it wasn’t as if they were living in the middle ages when people could just show up out of nowhere and not be noticed. Small towns were notorious for being suspicious of any newcomers, so they would have to find out if Sullivan had been there and get the hell out of there.
They split up into groups of two and started to canvas the streets. Most of the people wouldn’t talk to them, but some stopped and listened. Unfortunately, it seemed as though Sullivan wasn’t there and Circe called the group together when the local Sheriff started to follow her and Blake. As they made their way out of town, something caught Circe’s eye. She couldn’t believe that Brielle would do that so damn close to a human town!
In the distance, Brielle opened the portal and she even waved at them as though she wanted them to follow her before she jumped through the portal. Circe mind linked everybody and all eyes turned just in time to see the portal disappear.
“It could be a trap.” Violet warned, but they couldn’t take the chance of losing Sullivan and Brielle again, so Violet opened the portal and they started jumping through. Brielle and Sullivan were nowhere once they got to the other side, but Violet quickly found the new portal and she opened it. Circe was starting to feel really seasick from all the jumping, but she had to force it down. They had to keep going. This time Sullivan wasn’t going to get away!
ON THE EDGE OF THE FOREST, Sullivan watched as the entire group left through the portal, but before he could make any moves, a group of humans came running. Dammit! He could have grabbed the smallest of the group of wolves and killed her if the humans hadn’t arrived! Now he couldn’t dare go to the town either. Knowing humans as he did, they would be too suspicious of him.
Sullivan returned to the cave and realized that he could also not stay there. Those humans would be swarming the forest within a matter of hours. He had to get out of there and make sure that nobody would follow him. Why did he agree to this damn plan?! It would have been so much easier to have Brielle’s magic to help him! He growled and shifted.
At least he could run in his wolf form and the humans wouldn’t be able to recognize his human form. He stepped out of the cave and sniffed the air. It seemed safe enough. He turned his head in the opposite direction to the town. His paws pushed deep into the dirt right before he sprinted out of the cave. Brielle told him that she would find him no matter where he went, so he could go in any direction. He ran until his paws felt raw.
When the river came into view, he nearly fainted with relief and he decided to rest there. He was far enough now that the humans wouldn’t find him and he could hide his tracks in the river for a while.
