Chapter 013

Karen When we got to Oscar's room, all we did was watch comedy movies. Comedy seemed to be his favourite genre. For someone that was always serious, it seemed unbelievable. He was also a sort of comedian himself because Oscar mimicked his mother and Tabitha while we laughed. He wasn't even angry. With the way he had reacted towards his mother, it would have been fair to think he would be fuming in his room. Though he was irritated by his mother's actions, he wasn't angry with her. I needed to understand what his mother had meant by a mate. It was so weird and sounded out of this world to me. Usually, a man meets a girl, they fall in love, get married and begin to have children. In her case, she had chosen someone for him, because he didn't seem like he was ready, but instead of a wife, she used the word mate. It sounded like something animals do. I knew he was a werewolf but did that qualify him as an animal? Maybe the supernatural kind. I was just too curious to let it pass, so I decided to ask him. " What did she mean by mate?" I asked him gently. Since he was in a light mood, there was no harm in being nosy. Oscar paused and looked at me for a while. I believe he was wondering how best to explain it. I hoped he did a better job explaining the mate thing than how he had explained the issue with my relatives. " A mate," he began, and then paused. " A fated-mate is a wolf's soul mate. The one the moon goddess has chosen to be the wolf's life companion. While a chosen mate is a mate chosen by the wolf to be his or her companion for life." he explained, and I was lost. " Why would a goddess choose a mate for werewolves. Is that even possible? How will you even know this fated mate?" I asked, and he looked at me with a smile. " The werewolves are children of the moon goddess. Therefore, she can smile at us by getting us our perfect match. When a wolf meets their fated mate, the two wolves that have been paired together will know. It would be love at first sight. They will both have a sense of peace around each other, falling completely in love, and they would become one soul together." he explained, and all I could say was " Wow" " Does every wolf gets paired up like that?" I asked, and he looked away from me before speaking. " Every wolf had the chance of experiencing that gift until Giles and John Hunter decided to thin out our population and ended up killing wolves that would have been fated to other wolves."  As soon as he mentioned the Hunters, an awkwardness settled in the atmosphere. I felt cheated. As an orphan, I felt unlucky not to have a family, but now that I knew I had one and I was being hunted because of them, I wished I could go back to my orphan days when I was unlucky but not hunted by werewolves. I would pick being unlucky over being hunted any day. Unfortunately, time travel hadn't been invented yet. " So what is the deal with Tabitha?" I asked, hoping that will ease the awkwardness a bit, and he sighed. " I am the Alpha of my pack. Packs are usually restless when their Alpha does not have offspring. There is the fear of another Alpha taking over the pack if their Alpha dies. My mother wants me to choose Tabitha as my mate so I can have offspring. Choosing Tabitha as my mate will make her the Luna of the pack." he explained, and it seemed more like he had created another question while answering one. " What is a Luna?" I asked him. I sounded and felt like a schoolgirl, but I needed to know. They were hunting me. I needed to know about them as much as possible. He smiled at me, understanding my curiosity and then replied, " Luna is the female Alpha of the pack. She is the counterpart of the alpha male and is the main female of the pack. The Luna is responsible for bearing pups for the alpha male and supports him and the rest of the pack in their times of need." he explained, and I could understand Tabitha's eagerness to be with a man that does not love her. She was just power-hungry. " You are a wealthy man. Why don't you pay someone to give you an heir so your mother and pack can rest?" I suggested, and he looked at me. " Are you interested in the job?" he asked, and I felt the blood rise to my cheek. " No, not at all. I hope our contract does not include that. I meant someone else or maybe a female werewolf." I said, trying to explain myself. The truth was I wasn't interested in having anyone's baby. My life was already messed up as it was. I didn't need any more complications than I already had. He began to laugh. " Protecting you from werewolves wasn't part of our contract either." he pointed out with a very funny tone. " Besides, the pack will not accept a human offspring as my successor, and I can't have such a contract with another werewolf. If she succeeds, she automatically becomes Luna, and I am not ready for that kind of commitment," he confessed. " So what will you do now, because your mother seems to be on your case?" I asked, and he smiled. " I intend to have as much fun as I can manage, then maybe choose someone without my mother's influence or suggestions and settle down with her," he confessed, and I realised I should be one foot out the door. The woman I saw seemed dead serious about finding a mate for her son very soon. We watched some comedy shows, and he managed to tell me things about his pack and my family. I wasn't so thrilled about my family part because it seems my grandfather had upset the balance. He sounded more like an evil man than a peacekeeper, but the truth was, this was a one-sided story. The supernatural population were the affected ones, they were bound to have a negative impression of him, and they were bound to tell the story in a way that made them look like the victims. I could only have the full story if I heard from both sides. If the hunters were peace and balance keepers, something must have triggered my grandfather's reaction. After meeting Oscar's mother and knowing how she regarded humans, it was safe to say they must have done something. She talked as if human beings were beneath them, and that could piss anyone off. I returned to my room the next day to get ready for work. Oscar had made sure clothes were in the wardrobe for my sake. He also assured me that I could now go about my business as long as he was with me. I was relieved a bit, but I also wondered how long would our arrangement last. It meant if I were no longer with him, those wolves would come calling. I was a bit angry because working in his corp was what exposed me in the first place, but I had begged for the job. Just when I thought I had finally gotten a break, I unconsciously walked into a mess.
