Karen.
The day at his office felt weird. After the whole issue with the werewolves, I never imagined that I would be able to return there. Everything was normal except for the fact that I remained in the same space Oscar was. I had to sit in his office all day. Tabitha kept coming to check on Oscar. She looked contemptuous every time she saw me on the couch, minding my business. The woman was trying too damn hard to get Oscar's attention. He knew but wasn't willing to give her the attention she sought, and she refused to take the hint.
" Is she going to sit here all day?" Tabitha finally asked.
Oscar looked at me and then looked at her.
" Are you going to keep barging into my office all day?" He asked her, and she was silent. I bet she didn't see that coming.
Maybe she thought Oscar was so hooked he would do anything for her. News flash, did she ever check the meaning of player?
" I came for our usual meeting," she said to him, and he dropped the pen.
" Your services are no longer needed, Tabitha. If you are finding it hard to remain in your office and do your work, then I think it would be best you resign and move on to do something you love and will appreciate more," he said in a very nice, but serious tone.
Tabitha looked dumbfounded. I saw the rage in her eyes, and I immediately looked away before she turned and ripped me apart. In everything, compared to Tabitha, I was outmatched and outclassed. I would not dare antagonise her.
" You are saying this because of this human? Something you will soon be bored of? A human that you picked from the streets? A human that you do not know her roots? A human beneath you? You have had so many of them, and I have never complained, but as your future mate, I am letting you know that your behaviour towards me because of a plaything that won't last is unacceptable." she said. She didn't even have the decency to call my name or give me respect. Oscar's mom had gone to get a mini her for her son. Seeing how he was with his mother the night before, I was eager to see how this would play out.
Oscar stood up a bit pissed off. I could tell he was controlling himself.
" Who gave you the rights to speak to your alpha in that tone?" He asked, and fear was in her eyes.
" Who named you as my equal? Did I make any promises to you? You were also a plaything since that is how you want to put it. Unlike you, Karen is not disillusioned. She isn't expecting anything from me. She knows her place and maintains her distance. If I want to get serious with anyone, it wouldn't be a condescending, egotistical, mentally deranged, greedy wolf like you. Now listen to me and listen real good. I can no longer have you working here or coming to my house. You are to resign and return to live in the packhouse. If you refuse to follow my orders, I will cast you out." he said with a strong promise that resounded in the air. I didn't understand why casting her out was a great punishment, but I dared not ask. The look on her face had said it all. I was glad I knew my place.
" Alpha, Please. Everything I did and said was out of jealousy. I don't mind sharing." she pleaded.
" I am not yours to share, and I am no longer interested in keeping you as company anymore," he said, and she bowed her head in shame. The power of the alpha was no joke. Her sudden mood and countenance proved it.
" Karen, get ready. We are closing early and going for lunch together," he stated while she was still there, and I got up to follow him.
We left Tabitha crying in Oscar's office. I felt bad for her, but she had brought it upon herself. She, of all people, should have known that Oscar was a player and couldn't be held down against his will.
"Do you know a nice place we could eat downtown?" Oscar asked and I looked at him surprised. He didn't seem like the type to eat in a place that wasn't fancy, but maybe he was feeling adventurous.
" There is this place I loved to eat before I got in trouble with the wolves" I suggested.
" Seeing the way you ate your dinner, you know what good food tastes like. Let's try it. " he agreed and I was thrilled to be leading Oscar Wilde to Jenny's Cafe. That place was more like a diner than a cafe but no one had ever called them out on it.
As soon as we found a place to sit, a waitress came to take our order. I noticed she kept looking at Oscar in a strange manner.
The waitress, Chelsea had worked there most of her life. Everyone that was employed in that Cafe had worked there most of their lives. I had applied to work there and they had turned me down, but the owner allowed James to feed me for free and I was more than grateful for that.
" How do you know this place?" Oscar asked me as soon as we had settled down.
" I came to look for employment here when I left the orphanage. They turned me down of course but offered to feed me for free till I got a job. I stopped eating free food here the day you employed me." I told him and he didn't seem so surprised.
" I see, " he replied " Were you able to thank them?" he asked and I nodded.
" I gave James some of the money that Valery had given me," I explained.
" What about the owners?" He asked.
" I didn't. I never had any interaction with them and besides, they wouldn't have accepted even if I offered."I explained.
" Typical" was all he said and it made me wonder why.
"Why would you say that?" I asked him and he smiled. I could see that he was hiding something. For some strange reason, I could sense his feelings and I didn't like it. It made me feel weird.
It started the night we had made out. I was feeling overwhelmed and giddy at the same time. Initially, I had felt the event and the uncertainty of my situation was what was responsible for the feeling and l kept thinking that way, until what transpired in his office with Tabitha. I felt everything he felt towards her and I knew how he would react. I intended to ask him about it later.
" Well," he began, obviously looking for a lie. " You know how people are. Most people around here don't like favours," he said and I arched an eyebrow.
" Really? Favours?" I repeated so he could hear how silly it sounded. " Thanking someone for taking care of my stomach for eight years is not a favour, Oscar. I have a feeling you don't want to tell me the real reason and I respect that. Next time, just tell me you don't want to explain and I'll drop the subject.' I advised and he looked away. He was feeling awkward. Luckily our food came.
Oscar was sceptical about eating. Soon he dug in and all his scepticism was history.
