Kennedy leaned forward slightly in the backseat. She didn’t want to miss anything Dawn was going to say.
“Jackson’s having a hard time with being between jobs right now. That’s only natural. But there’s more to it than just that. His issues aren’t with Carl specifically, more with conservative Christianity in general, but Carl’s the face of that in Jackson’s mind. And all this media hype about the Truth Warriors conference has done nothing but rub salt in old wounds.
“Jackson’s sister died. It was about ten years ago now, back when we were still living out in Washington. Her husband was no good. She went and talked to her family pastor, and he told her what so many conservative ministers tell their congregants in cases like that. Be more respectful. Be more submissive. Pray f
