"I remembered the captain getting beaten by a small omega."
I chuckled and glared at Garrett for recalling that shameful memory. Yes, I was defeated by an omega but it wasn't because that omega was stronger than me but because I was blinded.
"How many times have you told that story to them." I said.
We were going to the T-Zone the first zone that the government incinerated, and it was also that zone where the virus came from. Marie's drone was surveying the burning zone when she saw a man come out from a burning building and run around the place.
"Captain, that story will never bore us. I mean, our great dominant alpha captain subdued by an omega? That's worth the headlines."
I only shook my head as I rested my back on the passenger chair, closing my eyes. Gareth was driving and the rest of the three monkeys under my command: Chan, Marie, and Lake, were stuck like sardines in the backseat.
Marie laughed. "And he planned to confess to that omega and was rejected because he already has an Alpha."
They all laughed. I am their Captain but they always make fun of me about that story and I never bothered to correct them. They were partly true anyway.
"That was legendary!" Chan said in between laughter.
" Oh, it was! " Gareth agreed as he turned the armored car to the left. "I wish you guys witnessed it."
Five years ago, Gareth and I met in a training group abroad and we were inseparable until now while the rest of the squad, I only met them during the virus outbreak, creating a five-man team under my command. The government planned to burn the highest count of virus outbreak and we were tasked to survey the east side of the country to rescue survivors and bring them back safe before they would be burned alive with those zombies.
"I want to meet that omega who dares reject our perfect Captain." Marie said.
I glanced at the rear mirror. "I wasn't rejected. I didn't even confess. Why does it feel like you're twisting the story every time you talk about it?"
Garrett laughed.
"Okay. Captain was about to confess and he saw the omega kissing another Alpha like the way he kissed our captain that day. Tsk. " Garrett shook his head. "So tragic. "
Marie was laughing until tears were glistening in her eyes.
"Damn! Please let this omega live so I can kowtow in front of him."
I laughed remembering that time. It was what Garrett said. You could say it was love at first sight but of course, I didn't go easy with him and I didn't know he was an omega before the training. He sort of cheated, those pair of dark orbs could be considered a cheat.
"Probably." If he stayed abroad, there might be a big chance that he was still alive.
We didn't know the condition and situation of the other countries but I knew that our country suffered the most and was almost on the brink of extinction. The virus spread rapidly and it was too late to isolate the infected after a mass panic and it happened so fast. It only took one day for everything to change drastically and it has been five days since then.
Scientists were doing their best to create an anti-virus also and one of our missions aside from rescuing civilians was to capture zombies for them to study and take samples with.
"Okay enough with the nonsense. Remember my orders. We will meet after two hours at your drop-off area. Don't get bitten. " I said as Garrett stopped the car in front of an intersection and before us was the burning T-Zone.
"Yes, Captain!" The three chorused before getting out of the car.
"Take care also captain."
"Don't die."
Garrett and I drove to the other zone to capture some zombies while the rest were to find and rescue the man caught by Marie's drone and search for some other survivors too.

My hunger and tiredness were gone when the zombie ran-walked with his twisted leg towards me. My heart was pumping hard as I scrambled to my feet just when I heard a gunshot making me jump in fright and saw the zombie slumped on the floor like a huge slab of meat and he had a rotten smell, it was so bad.
My head suddenly throbbed and I felt dizzy for a while making me close my eyes for a second and turn to the one who shot the zombie. A woman in a high ponytail and wearing a khaki uniform was standing at the store entrance, holding a pistol.
She smiled at me while waving the pistol that she just fired at the zombie.
"Did that startled you? I'm sorry." She softly said as if she wasn't the one who fired a gun and killed a zombie.
I breathed out.
"It's fine. Thank you." I said, grabbing the biscuit that I dropped and stood up.
"I'm Marie, a soldier who was tasked to search for survivors around this area. Are you alone here?" She looked at what I was eating.
"Yes." I walked to the zombie and its head was splattered on the floor from how rotten it was.
It was surprising how I recovered easily after witnessing such a scene. Maybe that explains why I couldn't find a living person around the area and why it was burned.
"What's your name?" She asked as she scanned the store.
I glanced around with my eyes while looking down and saw a magazine a meter away from the zombie.
"Leander." I read.
"Why are you still here?"
"I don't know. Where are we?"
Marie frowned and pouted her lips as she looked around as if a kid looking for her favorite snack in a grocery store.
"We're in between T-zone and S-zone. After two days, S-zone will be burning like T-zone." Marie said just when two men walked inside the store who were also wearing khaki uniforms like Marie and bringing submachine guns.
"The building's clear." The one with the redhead said to Marie. "No zombie."
Both of the two men looked at me and smiled.
"Is he the guy?" The redhead said.
The guy? I thought.
"Yes. Only one zombie." Marie said as she grabbed as much packed food as she could. "Let's go. We'll check the other building too."
I should go with them right? I didn't know where to go so the three of them showing up was a blessing for me.
"I'm Chan." The redhead introduced himself as he haphazardly threw the submachine gun to his other hand and extended his now free hand for a handshake.
"Leander." We shook hands.
"Lake." The black-haired man said and I also mentioned the name that I got from the magazine and shook his hand.
It feels like I was escorted by three armed bodyguards outside the abandoned building and off to the next building in search of hiding survivors.
I guess I was a little thrilled.
