I went with the three soldiers in search of remaining survivors in the area but unfortunately, we only found zombies lurking around.
"That will be the last building yet we still have an hour before captain and Garrett arrives. We should survey the area once again after. " Chan said.
*Okay. " Marie and Lake agreed then they turned to me making me nod my head also.
Well, I can't say no, can I?
Zombies are attracted to sounds and lights so we couldn't call or make any loud noises as we searched the area because we didn't want zombies to surround us.
We walked soundlessly towards a six-storey building. The ground floor window glasses were smashed open, fragments of glass and scattered things were everywhere on the floor. The building wasn't in a different condition from the other buildings there. It was ina a messy and ruined state.
To think that it only took a few days for the world to fall. Was the virus that contagious?
A bite or even a scratch could turn someone into a zombie who loses control of their mind and the virus would turn them into an animal who doesn't know pain and only desires to kill everything that moves, especially one that produces loud sounds and one thing that they observed about those zombies were they would become aggressive when faced with an alpha.
The first floor of the building was clear and so was the second floor and third floor. I was wondering while picking a steel rod if we really need to search the whole building. If survivors were there, then they should have fled that building.
"Damn, this one is a beauty! Guys! Look what I saw." Chan exclaimed and went out of an office and showed us what he just picked.
"Woah!" Lake exclaimed seeing the sword that Chan picked.
"Dude got some good collection left in his office."
Lake scanned the sword, sliding it from its sheath and showed a shiny blade.
"It's real." Lake said.
Chan chuckled. " Lucky. "
Chan grabbed the sword and walked towards me, his eyes on the steel rod that I just picked a while ago. I only picked it just in case.
"D'you know how to use this?" Chan asked, referring to the sword.
I looked at the plain black Katana he was holding. I only shrugged.
"Well, you should have a weapon to protect yourself too." Chan said as he threw me the sword vertically and I caught it. "How about you try swinging that for practice."
The sword was cold on my hand but the coldness felt familiar as if it wasn't the first time I held a sword making me frown. I lost almost all of my memories but I would regain some if I saw familiar things and that I used to be involved with that thing just like that time when Marie shot the zombie way back at the store.
Although she attached a silencer, I could still hear it and it triggered something in my memory making my head throbbed for a minute. I remembered that I used to practice shooting with real guns making me wonder why. Did I have the same job as these people?
Then the same thing happened when I saw Chan, seeing his redhead made me remember that I had a few friends with red hair also. I guess my memories would slowly come back judging from how fast I could remember but I didn't like how my head hurt. I was glad that I knew how to act poker-faced even though my head was hurting.
I nodded and murmured thank you.
I set the rod that I picked up back on the floor and scanned the katana. It was light in weight and the blade was thin.
"Let's go up." Lake said and we walked to the stairs when we heard a low and familiar growl that echoed in the building making all of us stop in our tracks and look back.
Hearing that sound made my hair stand up from how creepy it sounded. My hand tightened on the grip of the sword as I saw a limping figure coming towards us.
"Zombies." Lake said.
I was glad that the building was surrounded by glass windows and it helped with the lighting inside the building.
Lake fired at the zombie, perfectly hitting its head making it fall to a nearby chair and it overturned together with the zombie creating a loud sound then followed by loud growling noises and hurried footsteps coming towards our direction.
"What the fvck!" Chan cursed silently.
"Where did these zombies come from?" Marie muttered as she flipped the submachine gun that was strapped on her back and she handed me her pistol.
"Use this." She said and stuffed the gun at me. "Don't get bitten or get scratched if you don't want to die." She said. "Guys, run to the stairs!" Marie said and we all ran to the stairs where we came from as the zombies were also running towards us.
Lake was the last in the line and was the one to close the staircase door just when the zombies reached it and banged on it.
"Run!" Lake exclaimed.
I ran down the stairs as fast as I could and when the door was destroyed by the zombies, undead bodies rolled down the stairs.
My heart was pounding as I gripped the railings and made a sharp turn in the middle of the stair flight and continued running down. The zombies rolled down and hit the wall before they stood up and chased us down the stairs.
"Keep running!" Lake said.
He was behind me and hearing the zombies made my heart beat faster as if it would burst out from my ribs any moment and I could feel the adrenaline flowing fast in my system as I jumped on the railings down to every flight of stairs. I know I would have broken bones in one wrong move but I had to keep up with them and Lake was forced to follow behind me, slowing him down so I had to follow what ahead of me were doing.
Upon reaching the ground floor, there was no time to rest, Marie and Chan were aiming their guns at the stairs and fired after Lake and I got out.
We shouldn't let those zombies get out of that building so they opened fire as zombies started swarming from the stairs. Zombies were piling from one another and even though they cracked a bone, they couldn't feel pain and still ran towards us.
It wasn't the only stairs in that building and zombies also rolled down from the other staircase and ran towards us. I unsheathed the sword and didn't hesitate to run and neatly severed the heads of those rotting zombies with a handgun in my left hand, firing it at those zombies who could get close to me.
The feeling of slicing those necks was like slicing unions with a very sharp knife. I don't have to use force to slice through the bone. The sword was so sharp that I couldn't feel it and I was also surprised because it turned out that my aim was perfect with the gun, never missing a single shot and all were bullseye as if my hand had a memory of firing guns and I was good at it.
I was done dicing those zombies just when the gunshots stopped. I just noticed that both of my hands were gripping so hard at the hilt of the sword and the gun that it was hurting and trembling. I had long exhausted the ammo but I still didn't let go, only after the place became quiet did I let go of it as if my hand got burned and it hit the head of a zombie that was near my feet.
I couldn't believe we finished all the zombies in such a small space.
I groaned at the pungent smell and I wanted to remove my clothes that were stained with black blood. It was so horrible that it was giving me headaches and making my stomach turn.
