Chapter Six: The decision to run a cold camp was an easy one. The lack of creature comforts gave a sense of urgency to his men, and the discomfort kept Ed focused on his goal. This order was unusual for the general and his men. Even during the consolidation campaign, Ed rarely ran a cold camp. He was too enamored with the creature comforts his position provided him. During the war, the army’s size swelled by two-thirds, all warm bodies required to keep his men happy. All told, when the empire was ready for total war, Ed commanded over one hundred thousand warriors, with another two hundred thousand camp followers needed to keep them in the field.
