9 The low evening light streamed in through the large window in the Lord Nelson as the sun started to set. Sophie Lawson dipped her head slightly to avoid being dazzled, and took a sip of her gin and tonic. She’d been trying to limit her alcohol intake — amongst everything else she’d been trying to do – but one wouldn’t hurt. In any case, she was a couple of days past the peak. If it hadn’t worked this time — and it hadn’t worked the previous eighty-four times — the countdown would begin again for next month.
