27 It took all the strength Caroline had to haul herself into a sitting position, her muscles tight and aching as she stretched her legs out in front of her on the bed. She hated waking up feeling like this, but on the plus side, at least she was waking up. Without the chemotherapy, that might not have been a daily certainty. She’d taken to sleeping with a bandana on, unable to face finding clumps of hair on her pillow each morning. Her consultant had warned her the side effects would be more severe with the new course of chemotherapy, and he’d been right. Her previous treatment had felt more concentrated.
