Chapter 1
Cinder My name is Cinder, and I’m the unfortunate Omega of the Fall Pack. Not only am I bullied by the other pack members for being weak and small, but I’m also completely under the radar of my Alpha, who is also my stepfather. And he is a bastard named Pike. He stole my diary yesterday since he thinks I shouldn’t keep secrets from him, and I haven’t been able to recover it since I have no idea where he keeps it. Neither do I know if he has read it or not. Probably not, since he treats me the same way: like I’m worth less than the maids and butlers working inside the mansion. It’s annoying and quite embarrassing. We are part of the same family, and yet I am treated like a slave. My life was like this, even when my mother was still alive to inform Pike that I hated being the Omega. He did not care. And my mom? She used to tell me, “But he isn’t that bad! It’s just that you’re weaker than the other wolves in the pack, honey. You’re the Omega, and Pike believes in the old ways - that the Omega should be shunned.” And since I loved my mother, I just...I guess I just went along with being treated like s**t. But it was a little easier back when my mother was alive. Pike...sorry, my stepfather tended to ignore me most of the time since my mother kept him busy. These days, I’m not that lucky. “What are you going to wear to the Luna Ball?” Cecile, one of my stepsisters, asks Fran, my other stepsister, while they are eating by the large kitchen table. I’m not allowed to sit by it at the same time as them. “Hmm, I don’t know,” Fran taps her chin as if deep in thought. “I mean, the ball is for our father to find a new Luna, so I feel like I can’t wear something too fancy, or I will steal away the attention from the other she-wolves, you know? It wouldn’t be fair to them since father’s attention should only be on his future wife.” “I get that. I’m actually thinking the same thing - I can’t look too pretty, or father will be too busy complimenting his favorite daughter.” “Favorite?!” Fran hisses. “I’m the favorite!” I roll my eyes but say nothing as I keep sweeping the kitchen floor free from dirt. I’m hoping for Fran and Cecile to pay me no attention. I am, however, not that lucky. Cecile drops a banana peel on the floor. “Oops, looks like you missed something, Cinder-ella.” Fran barks out laughter. “Ha-ha, good one!” She dries her eye and then makes a little show as she empties her plate by her chair. “Here, you forgot to clean up this mess too. And you better hurry - father won’t be happy if he sees what a poor job you’ve done cleaning the kitchen.” “Oh yes,” Cecile agrees. “He might punish you.” I shoot them both a withering glare that they completely ignore. Gah! I wish that I could give them a taste of their own medicine, but as the Omega, there is nothing I can do that wouldn’t result in a punishment. So, I grit my teeth and get down on my knees to pick up the banana peel, trying to ignore the sharp pain flashing through my knees. I can’t let my stepsisters see how much the job is hurting me. I will be damned if I let them have the satisfaction of seeing me show any weakness. But then, just as I’m about to stand up again, I feel a hand on my shoulder. I turn to see Pike towering over me, and his face is twisted into a cruel sneer. “What are you doing, Omega?” he growls. “I thought I told you to stay out of sight until the Luna Ball is over.” He did tell me that, but the ball isn’t until tomorrow - I thought I could walk around freely today. “I was just cleaning up, sir,” I say, trying to keep my voice steady. He wrinkles his nose in disgust and looks down at the mess that’s still on the floor. “Well, you’re not doing a very good job, are you?” he snaps. “Clean it up properly, or I will make sure you regret it.” I nod, unable to speak, as he stalks away. My stepsisters watch him go, giggling behind their hands. I want to scream, to lash out at them and tell them what a worthless excuse for a family they are, but I know it won’t do any good. They are too entrenched in their own cruelty to see reason, and if I lashed out, I would be the one with the sorry ass since I’m expected to behave as the Omega. Therefore, I swallow my anger and go back to cleaning, hoping that the Luna Ball will be over soon. Maybe my stepfather will pay me less attention with a new woman by his side. It would keep him busy. I continue cleaning the mansion together with the actual workers. It takes many hours, and once I lunch comes, I go out to relax in the garden with my lunchbox. But just as I’m about to sit down, I hear a tiny little voice calling for help. “HELP ME!” Startled, I look around but don’t see anything. Then I notice a sparkle in the rosebush and go closer to investigate it. To my surprise, there’s a tiny fairy struggling against an invisible net! “Help me!” it cries out again in its high-pitched voice. “Please! I’m stuck!” I quickly move closer to free the little creature from its prison. With some effort, I manage to get rid of the net that was trapping it. Once freed, the fairy sits in the palm of my hand with obvious gratitude in its eyes. “Thank you for saving me,” she squeaks with her delicate wings fluttering nervously against my skin. “You’re...welcome,” I blink rapidly. I’ve never seen a fairy in my entire life. “I had no idea fairies even existed. That’s what you are, right?” “Right,” she beams at me. “But I’m not just any fairy - I’m your fairy. Your fairy godmother.” “My fairy godmother?” “Yes! Your mother was taken away too early from you, so I’m here to grant you three wishes. Not at the same time, though. We will do one wish at a time.” Is this a joke? What the heck was in that chocolate chip cookie that I ate earlier - drugs? But as I stare at the fairy, I realize that this is no joke. She looks sincere, and I can feel her magic emanating from her. “Okay, three wishes,” I say slowly. “But what can I wish for? I mean, there must be rules, right?” The fairy giggles. “Oh, honey, there are plenty of rules. For example, I can’t kill someone, make someone fall in love, or give you infinite wishes. But don’t mind that. I will help you pick the perfect wish.” “...the perfect wish?” Is there even such a thing? “Uh-huh,” her smile widens. “For example, I can help you escape from this life of servitude. Or why not ask me to help you find the love of your life? Or maybe you want something more specific, like a beautiful dress to wear to the Luna Ball tomorrow?” I’m not surprised that she knows about the Luna Ball. She is magical, yet I hesitate for a moment, wondering if this is all some kind of strange dream. But if it is, then I should just have some fun with it, no? No need to ask to have a serious wish granted - I should just have some fun. “Okay,” I say finally. “The Luna Ball is taking place on my birthday, which is tomorrow, and it would be a lot of fun to go there and, you know, be a normal girl. A lot of depressive s**t has happened in my life. So, could you uh...help me hide my identity so I can go there and have some fun, even if it’s just for one single night?” The fairy claps her hands, her wings buzzing with excitement. “Consider it done, my dear. Tomorrow, one hour before the Luna Ball starts, you will take on a different appearance. You will look about ten years older and have the most beautiful dress at the ball.” “If it’s not too much to ask, could you also make me a little bit taller?” I grimace. “I know it’s silly, but at 5’1, I feel like no one takes me seriously at this height.” Especially my stepfather. Not only am I the Omega, but I’m also short - no wonder he thinks that I’m a weakling. “Alright, you will be taller and far more beautiful - your skin will be cleared from every blemish, you will have the perfect jawline, and consider your glasses gone since they will just get in the way.” I smile at her. “Awesome!” “I’m glad that you’re happy, and don’t worry, you still have two wishes left. But let’s wait until after the ball to make those come true, okay?” My smile remains. “Okay!”
