Charles. The board meeting ended. Finally, I stretched my hand while my assistant walked in. The young lad had decided to retire and take over his family business. “the penthouse that you had asked me to purchase, when do you want to move in?” he questioned, his eyes never leaving his tab. I haven’t told him why I had asked him to purchase a penthouse so randomly when I could move into any of my owned houses. “that shouldn’t matter for now. What about the secretary? I thought that she should be coming in today.” Throughout the meeting, my mind had itched for a notification, informing me that Riley was here. She was meant to resume today. Sam scratched the nape of his neck. “actually, she was meant to resume tomorrow, but she offered to resume today, and then she didn’t. I think she hasn’t settled in yet.” He explained. “she would be in tomorrow.” He added. Tomorrow, when I fly to D.C. and take over the business there for a while, maybe a week or two. “is there a way to shift my meetings in D.C. to Friday?” I doubt it would happen, not when I have a meeting with the Mayor on Thursday. “or send an email to the secretary, asking her to come in today.” I ordered, checking my time. “I want to interview her before I go.” “Is there a need to interview her when she has already gotten the job? I mean, she is to resume tomorrow.” Sam tried to argue. Unless I get to see Riley before I believe New York, then there is no way that my heart will be at peace. At least for my daughter, I want to make her dreams come true. “do as I had said, Sam. I have a reason for asking you to do that.” I’d ask myself if she would remember me as the man she had spent a night with. “she was happy when you saw her, so of course, she has forgotten it.” I reminded myself. Sam wrapped up everything, and he walked away. I sank back into the chair, my body tensing. I picked up my phone, calling Zeiley. I haven’t heard from her or Noah for a while now, and it is beginning to kill me. At the fifth ring, Zeiley picked up the call, her voice hoarse as she spoke into the phone. “Are you crying, my angel?” I questioned. The only way for Zeiley to be happy is the day that she gets a child to call her own. Her life has never been better since the day they found out they couldn’t give birth, and the issue isn’t from any of them. It would have been easy if they had gotten someone to surrogate for them. She mumbled a no from the other side, sniffling. I am no fool to believe that, just from her voice and the rustling in the background, she is crying. “I told you not to worry, and I can't let you stress yourself over this. I am doing everything to see that you get what you want. I don’t mind how I will get it done, but be rest assured that you will get what you want.” I promised her. “thank you, daddy.” She breathed, and the call ended. “I have to convince Riley to agree,” I mumbled. For her, I don’t mind if I would be losing my last penny. I am ready to sacrifice everything for Zeiley because she means the world to me after her mother died and left the two of us in this cruel world. I was a lone boy who fell in love in his early twenties, with no one to look up to or even parents. I had just begun to navigate the world, juggling at most three part-time jobs until I met her mother. It was love at first sight. Without knowing how the world worked, my first love got pregnant. Nine months later, Zeila came into existence, but as I got a gift, one left. Since then, I took it upon myself that no matter what, I would never let Zeila, and I ended up failing as the father I had promised myself to be. I fisted my hand, sadness flowing through my entire body. Realizing that the lady you had a one-night stand with is your last option is wild, not when there is a massive chance of her saying no. Leaving the boardroom to my office, I met Sam not at his station, which could be because it was time for the lunch break. Lunging my tired body on the seater, I covered my face with a hand. I had wanted to rest, get some sleep, and maybe I could be able to think through everything again, just in case Riley said no. The only thing that I could see, clouding my eyes, was Riley’s face on the same bed that we had spent that day. There was a knock on the door that made me grumble and come in without sitting up. “sir, you had asked me to call in the new secretary, and here she is.” Sam informed. At first, it had occurred to me as a joke, and perhaps I was hallucinating. Heels clicked in the office, and I sat upright. Riley walked into the office, her face down. She was dressed in a black dress that stopped past her knees. Her scent filled the entire place, reminding me of that same night, the one that I had tried so hard to get rid of. “Do you still need me, or should I get going?” “go,” I said curtly. As Sam walked over to the office, I had expected Riley to do something, look up at me or anything, but she did none. It was beginning to kill me because some of me felt like she wasn’t the same woman from that night; meanwhile, she could be the one. “Look, Riley,” I ordered. I should be professional, but to hell with it. Our eyes met, and I could see the shock on her face, no matter how hard she had tried to hide it. “You.” She exclaimed.
