Chapter Eighteen
Hiding does not make sense.

Fate Pierce’s Point of View
“What are you doing, child?”
I could not run away from this anymore.
Waking up to a call from my grandfather informed me just how much I had f****d up. While I was lucky enough to have my grandparents leave before we could reach the house, I seem to have failed to realize that someone could access the person who had gotten me into the school.
That would be my mother’s father—Silvester.
It seemed like I had mislook that information.
Damn it.
“Fate Pierce.” He grumbled, making me shudder in fear. My grandfather does have a busy life, and with him to take a pause to accommodate me reflects just how it was needed. “I have asked you a question, child.”
A soft sigh escaped my lips, already knowing that I could not stay quiet. “I was about to shift, grandpa. Do you need anything?”
“I needed some answers. Why is the committee calling for me concerning your activity in the school? Based on their tone, it is not good. Did you do anything?” He said.
His words do make me worry.
There are words they will give me, possibly something that will let me accept this union, but I do not want that. I do not want anyone from my family to know my connection with the Alpha King. They do not be aware of what I have planned since it was dangerous for anyone to know.
Foxes do not belong in the castle filled with werewolves.
“Fate.” He called again, clearly worried.
I shook my head, finally revealing what I had done. The chance to run around the forest were all impossible by now. “I have skipped some days in school.”
“And your guardians are just letting that idle by?”
My lips did not even utter a response to that, fully knowing that my grandparents do not know that. He seemed to know what I meant when he excused himself from the person he was talking to. After a second of silence, my phone chimed into another tone.
Confused, I looked back and realized that he was requesting a video call.
I didn’t need this…
Even still, I accepted it.
“What is happening, little one?” The voice was comforting, and making me see his smile did appease my worries even if it was just a second. My grandfather were rarely called in that endearment. He did not even look his age. We are all not sure if his life is extended, but he looked like he’s my mother’s brother… rather than his father. “Fate.” He called again.
I let a small smile extend in my lips. “Well… what did you tell them? Am I a human who has werewolf parents? How can they call you when they are aware that you are a werewolf?”
“I told them that you are my late human mate’s niece, one that I had adopted into my family when her family did not want her.” He said, uttering a soft sigh. The story does seemed complicated, but it worked well in our favor. “So, in a sense—yes. In record, you are a human who did not know that the family who had adopted you are werewolves.”
“And why did they agree to enroll me?”
“With your age, a normal pack would have shifted wolves by every corner without a single dispute. That does not happen in your current school. Since it is not meant for every paranormal, humans who are well-off preferred to enroll their children to such establishment.” He added.
His words rang true, and sure, I could grant access with only that thinking. Looking into my grandfather, someone who had to understand foxes more than me and my mother ever could, I couldn’t really offer more lies.
“Something did happen.” I started, pulling my comforter close to me as I could not help but let out a jagged sigh. “I had found my mate here, grandpa.”
He frowned, perplexed with the emotion in my tone. “Then why do you look so down? Doesn’t that make anyone happy?”
Naturally, it would.
“Did Mom tell you who my new friend is?” I questioned, having him to show that he does know. My lips pulled a frown. It does imply that he does know that I am now connected with the Hawthrone. The very family that he was warned not to get us familiar with. “I found my mate there—in their castle. He’s the one who is currently sitting in the throne.”
He was surprised.
I could see shades of emotions coming from the man, and I do understand. I have gone through the same level of emotional distress the second I figured everything out. The issue isn’t as easy to mend as what my mother had went through. Foxes generally do not hate werewolves, but we do hold some conflict emotion from the Royals.
“And the reason you’re missing classes is because of the fact the Alpha King is making himself known to you? Is he making some advances?”
“But I told him that I have a boyfriend and described Kun.”
My grandfather laughed at my words, but it does describe the sadness in his eyes. We both know why I am not head over the clouds into knowing who my mate was. Even when I was young, hearing all the bad things that the palace had done to my kind had always made me spurt nothing but cries of anger towards them.
“Listen, Fate,” He smiled, leaning towards the camera.
“No!” I grumbled, shaking my head. He had some conflict through my rage of emotion, but I could see that he understand where I am coming from. My grandfather guided me since I was young. He is well aware what I feel about all of these. “Please do not tell me that he’s my mate, and I needed to accept him and all of those things. I do not need it.”
My grandfather frowned. “What I am saying is, you can’t put that much pressure on him. He is a powerful man, little one. The man is the King. You missed two school days, and he had already contracted the council to talk to me. If you continue doing that, he will charge in your home.”
“He can’t do that.”
The pause between us made me aware that he could do exactly just that.
Grandpa shook his head, holding his temple. “Child, the King is already aware that your grandparents are werewolves. That I, your benefactor, is a werewolf.”
Fuck.
“If he is forced to visit your home, Larry and Jane can’t fight his authority and could invite him over.” Every word that escaped his lips was careful, making me frown as he seemed to be making me navigate away from the King. He really is supportive through everything. There was some smile that spread on his face as he answered. “I can’t tell you what you can and can’t do. I know you have your reasons, but I am here to tell you that the path you choose is difficult. No one has the power to defy the link, especially one that is that strong.”
“I missed you, grandpa…” I whispered, frowning at him. “Maybe you can pretend to be my boyfriend’s brother and save me from all of this.”
He clicked his tongue. “I’m a werewolf. If your boyfriend is my brother, then he’s a wolf. The King would request his presence and personally let you two break off your relationship.”
As always, my grandfather knew a lot of things.
Days like this make me feel like I needed my family more than I had credited them to be. I miss hanging out with my brothers and spending some leisure time with my mother. Even training with my Dad seemed fun right now.
“I’ll come to visit next week.” He smiled, automatically making me grin. “Now you’re smiling. It seems like you caught your mother’s tactics.”
My lips finally bubbled a laugh. “She is an outstanding influence.”
“Not when you use her tactics for wrong things.” He said.
Despite the finally happy tone in my voice, I knew that I needed to do what he said. I needed to face Clayton and Somi and meddle with them while trying to fight the link inside me. I do not know how that will go on, but I will try.
Why does my life need to be this complex?
