He wasn’t coming, Mystic thought, as she listened to the night sounds outside. She stared down at Mae in her arms. She went to sleep a few minutes ago after waking up from her nightmare. Tonight it hadn’t been as bad as the other times. Mystic believed it had something to do with the fact that Kalan was taking them away from here. Mae must feel safe at the thought of living in the fairy kingdom. Mystic was glad about that. Her sister needed a break from the vampires that haunted her dreams.
But where was he? He should be there by now, Mystic thought as she got out of bed. She walked to the door, worried about him. She opened it, and stared through the darkness. He wasn’t there. Her heart squeezed in her chest. She missed him already. She blushed as she thought about last night. She wanted another night like that …not s*x, of course, but lying in his arms all night long. She had felt secure and loved as she slept next to him, his arms wrapped around her naked body.
She shivered as her body burned with desire.
She looked over her shoulder and looked at Mae. She was still asleep. She'd be fine, Mystic thought as she made her way to the guesthouse. She walked around going to the window. She breathed out a sigh of relief when she found it open. She pushed the curtain to the side, and climbed through. But she stopped with one leg in and one out when she realized that there was someone else in the room. Aria’s scent filled the room as if she belonged there. She stared at the bed, and there she was – in Kalan’s bed and his arms. She moaned, writhing beneath him. Mystic couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Kalan and Aria together…. What was going on?
This shouldn't be happening.
Her heart lurched painfully in her chest. She felt like she was dreaming, watching them together. Aria's moans filled the silence, stabbing her heart. She gasped as a cry lodged in her throat.
“How…?” she moved back, but she was already off balance. She fell out of the window, hitting the ground hard. She scrambled to her feet, not wanting them to see her there. But Kalan was already getting out of the window. His white hair cascaded down his naked body. For a second he stood there as if he didn't know her. And then his eyes went wide in surprise. He looked over his shoulder at Aria.
Mystic stared at him feeling like her world was falling apart. Her wolf cried deep inside. Mystic clutched her chest. It felt like her heart was breaking in her chest.
“Mystic?” he said, moving towards her.
“No, don’t come any closer,” she shook her head. Tears streamed down her face. She felt like she was suffocating. She couldn’t pull in enough air into her lungs.
“It’s not what you…” Kalan said, but Aria came up behind and placed her hand on his shoulder. Mystic’s heart shrivelled at the sight. She couldn’t stand there and watch, she ran around the house, heading to the tiny room. Her heart hammered in her chest, noise buzzed in her ears. She pushed the door open so hard it slammed against the wall. Mae gasped awake.
“What?” she stared at her with wide eyes. “What’s wrong?”
“He…he…” she couldn’t bring herself to say it. Kalan appeared at the door. His clothes hung on his body, looking like he’d put them on in a rush. His hair was dishevelled. He didn’t look like the level-headed fairy prince. Mystic walked to Mae and pulled her to her.
“Mystic let me explain. It’s not what you think. I don’t…” he clutched his head, wincing. A growl ripped out of him, and she could see him turning into Ruhuikar right before her eyes. But he held him in.
“No. There’s no need to explain. Please go,” she said, screaming at the top of her lungs. Tears streamed down her face.
“Mystic,” he took a step towards her. His body trembled. It was clear he was fighting with him.
Mae bravely stepped in front of her and raised her arms. Mystic stared at her surprised that she was protecting her like that. Kalan stepped back.
“Please leave,” she said.
Kalan stared longingly at her. “We’ll talk tomorrow,” he said, walking out of the door, leaving her and sister alone. The silence in the tiny room was deafening as Mae turned to look at her.
“Are you alright?” she asked.
“No,” Mystic said. Her body trembled as she walked to the bed. She sat down, and then stood again. She felt like she was going crazy. All her hope, her dreams were crumbling down right there at her feet. She closed her eyes but all she saw was Aria in her mate’s arms. How could he do this to her? She asked herself. The betrayal felt like a knife to her chest. The pain radiated through her. And he wanted to explain? Explain what? That it was a mistake…. she frowned as she tried to rationalize it. But she couldn’t see any possible reason why she was in his bed except that he wanted her there…after he claimed her and promised to take her away from there.
Mystic gulped as tears filled her eyes.
“Tell me what happened,” Mae said, coming to stand in front of her. “You’re scaring me.”
Mystic leaned down and picked her up. She was too big for that now, but she needed her sister close. She looked around the room, and she wanted to run away from it all. The need to leave was so intense she didn’t even think about it. She looked around the room again, there was nothing there for her and her sister she wanted to take. There was nothing there for her out there either. Mystic stepped to the door.
“Where are we going?” Mae asked.
Mystic thought about where to go for a second. The image of her home filtered into her mind, but something told her not to go there. She couldn’t go there.
She didn’t answer Mae answer Mae as she walked through the door, and into the darkness.

“We will have to try again,” Myalagin said as he stared at Lanarrie, who was passed out in the chair. Mason got to his feet, shaking out his hands. They ached from holding one position and using his magic for too long. He didn’t look at Myalagin as he started to pace. He kept his mouth shut, trying to think of a way to get him out of his house. He needed both fairies out of his house before they realized he lied.
Fuck. Mason closed his eyes. He walked to the kitchen and got himself a glass of water. For someone who spent years training in the art of magic, Myalagin was clueless or maybe he was naïve about where werewolves and their mating bonds were concerned, which was a good thing, because Mason was scared of what he might do to that poor girl in order for him to get his brother’s throne. Myalagin didn’t know that only mates could choose to break their bond. Magic alone can't break their bond. But Mason made him believe that magic could break it, because he wanted to save Kalan’s mate. From the day Myalagin told him his plans and asked him to search for Kalan’s mate, he’d done nothing but try to save her and stop Myalagin.
He wished he’d gone to the king and told him what Myalagin was planning. But he didn’t want to die. Myalagin was vicious. All he could do was keep the girl safe, and leave the rest to fate. But it seemed he might have gotten himself into trouble. He turned and stared at Myalagin. He was still pacing, looking murderous.
“Maybe you should come back tomorrow. Give Lanarrie a moment to rest. I did tell you that it might take forever to break the bond,” Mason said. Myalagin turned to him. His eyes narrowed on him. Mason’s whole body turned cold as he walked towards him. “What?”
“I do feel tired myself. I’ll see you tomorrow,” Myalagin said, and walked to the door. He gave Mason one last look and then walked out. Mason breathed out a sigh of relief. He stood still for a few minutes until he was sure that Myalagin was gone. He rushed to his bedroom and picked up the bag he already had packed from beside the bed. He picked up his sword from the closet and walked back downstairs. He walked to the door and paused for a few seconds before he opened it cautiously. His heart hammered in his chest as he walked out of the door. He wanted to be as far away from the valley of fairies as possible before Myalagin came back. There was no way he could hide the fact that he had lied to him from the very beginning.
Mason took off at a run as soon as he walked out of the gate. He didn't see Myalagin's dark figure appear from beside the house.
"Go. I knew you'd go to her. If only you knew everything will happen as I planned. And Kalan and his mate will have the worst fate ever. He'll fight for her heart, but never win it, because her wolf will never recognize her mate ever again," Myalagin murmured to the wind. The magic in the valley thrummed to do his bidding. He smiled as he turned to his house.
Mason looked around him as the wind picked up. He rubbed his arms, shivering slightly.
Mason sighed in relief as soon as he crossed the willow trees at the entrance of the valley. He came to a stop and closed his eyes. He wanted to check on Mystic and her sister. They were safe in Lanarrie’s home. But he knew that wouldn’t be for long, since what Lanarrie and Myalagin planned for them didn’t happen. He had to find a way to get her and her sister out of there.
Shit…Mason said as his vision showed her walking away from Lanarrie’s home through the dark. He turned in that direction, trying to pinpoint where exactly she was. He ran in that direction when he located her and her sister a few miles from the meadows that bordered Lanarrie’s house. They were heading into the nearby forest.
Fuck.
What the f**k happened to make her leave? Mason asked himself as he ran faster. She’d remained in Lanarrie’s home no matter what happened to her, because of what that vampire, Cassia, did to her when he and his brother attacked her pack.
He thought she would never leave. He clenched his jaw, wishing his gift allowed him to see the past. But he could only see the future.
He ran faster. Fear bubbled in his stomach. There were so many things that could happen to them out there in the dark.
Mason felt a sense of responsibility for them since he was the one who found them in the first place. He shouldn’t have refused Myalagin’s request. But he owed him his life. He slowed down as he came to the place where he located them. He looked around him. The darkness was thick, and he could barely see.
“I want to go home,” he heard Mae’s tiny cry. Mason got closer to where he heard the voice coming from. He came to a stop when he saw the girls huddled against a tree trunk. Mystic had her arms wrapped around her, and they sat on the ground.
“Mystic,” he said as he approached them cautiously. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to help you.”
She didn’t move. She held her sister tight, looking so small and afraid. Mason’s heart clenched in his chest, and he vowed to keep her safe always, because if it wasn’t for him her father would be alive, and she would still be home.
