Wilona's POV
“It’s time to go outside.” Adam chirped, holding my good left hand.
“When are you going to stop treating me like a fragile lightbulb?” I smirked, watching his lips flutter in a smile.
“When you can use your right arm.” He replied. Leading those who stayed behind to the clearing near the house.
I looked around and counted nine people. Three of which are guards keeping watch without invading my space. But the place felt a bit off. Adam helped me get comfortable on the grass. The moon was out in its full glory tonight, blanketing everything with a cool brightness enough to cast dark shadows with sharp edges.
In the distance, other wolves of the pack were revelling as they hunted and howled; loving this moonlit moment as much as I am. The howling resonated in the night sky with a sweet serenade of cacophony.
Adam growled. Strange wolves rushed out from the bushes.
“Wait!” I sniffed the air and my nostrils didn’t pick any scent. They locked their gaze on me. I laced my fingers with Adam’s.
“Wilona, I need you to run with everyone to the safe room. NOW!”
I was about to respond when five men casually walked out of the bushes. The one in front of them had a smirk on his scarred face. His hairless head shone under the moonlight as if he had just applied petroleum oil.
“Well, well, well. At least daddy is not here to save you this time.” A medium-built guy came into view, stepping closer to us like he owns our pack.
“Who the hell are you, and how did you get into our territory?” I retorted, watching his face twist into a smug.
“That’s not important... we are here to finish what the previous idíots failed to achieve.”
“And what’s that?” I interjected.
He whistled, making his group laugh. “To kill you, of course. Including your boyfriend there.” He said, pointing his finger at Adam.
‘Aiyana, try reaching out to dad while I distract them.’ I told her and she growled, frustrated because I couldn’t turn into her.
“The only ones to die are you and your friends.” Adam snarled, tightening his lips as he glares at the guy I assume is their leader.
The howl ceased, and I panicked for the people we were with when the wolves circled us with their muzzles curled backwards, showing us their teeth. I let out a piercing sound, feeling the back of my throat burn. Adam shielded me with his tall body.
“They outnumber us. You can’t win against fourteen wolves.” I said.
“I will die trying.” He said as he charged at the wolf attacking us.
There were whimpers coming from the pack members I came outside with. I flinched when Adam grabbed a wolf by its throat, twisting its neck and killing it. “Wilona, I linked your father. Please see if you can find an escape route.” He groaned when a wolf collided with his body, but he shifted mid-air.
I watched in horror as one of the wolf’s heads flew past me. ‘Dad.’ I screamed in my mind. Instantly, a charcoal wolf flew into the clearing, baring its teeth to the unknown wolves.
‘Mom?’ I whispered in disbelief.
‘Calm down, she is stronger than she looks.’ Aiyana piped in, wagging her tail in excitement.
‘But she is always rushing to take non-fighters to safety.’ I said, watching her swift turns.
‘No one will take you away from ME!’ she grunted, as she tears into the enemy like a raving lion. Mom’s protectiveness did things to my heart. She charged at one attacking her and sliced its head off with her claws.
Dad jumped into the fight and grabbed the remaining wolf by its tail, spinning it around before throwing it to the ground. The wolf yelped when he finished it off.
“Wilona!” Mom exclaimed, engulfing me in her arms.
“Mom.” I replied, returning her embrace.
“I was so scared for you.” She let out a sob. Her adrenalin deflated, and she realised what she had done.
“I thought Lunas were supposed to lead the pack to safety.” I giggled.
She chuckled, saying that she knew all the Lunas present were going to take the flight route.
Adam stood next to me, grinding his teeth, annoyed. “This was no coincidence. Someone knew where Wilona would be when everyone leaves for the forest.” He said, catching everyone’s attention.
“You are right young man, I think someone from this pack is behind all of this.” Alpha Varrick spoke, standing next to dad.
“Please go to your respective chambers. I would like to have a word with alphas in the morning after breakfast.” He spoke with a sigh. Instructing some scouts to clean up the mess. Everyone left, mumbling to each other.
I yelped when Adam scooped me into his arms and carried me to my bedroom. “You didn’t have to do that.”
“It was the only way to get you to your room quickly.” He said, opening the door and closing it.
“I was scared those wolves were going to hurt you.” He muttered, placing me on my bed, his face closer to mine. Enough for me to peer into his eyes. They sparkled with an untold emotion that moved something inside of me.
It touched me he’d shown so much care in his quiet, protective way. And right then, I was burning with an impatient urge to be closer to him. I felt a heat rise to my face as my breath hitched a few times. He hesitated for a moment, so I grabbed the back of his neck, pulling him to me, and kissed his gentle lips. I wasn’t as gentle as I parted his lips with my tongue, savouring the sweet taste of him. I didn’t want to back off from this kiss and, for a moment, neither did he. He kissed me back with just as much fervour.
Then he pulled away. “I better leave before I settle between your thighs.” He hissed, stopping the kiss.
I exhaled sharply, seeing him fixing himself.
‘Wow, I did not expect you to do that.’ Aiyana chirped with wide eyes.
‘Me neither.’ I replied, nodding at Adam as he leaves.
-*-
It was the morning of the coronation. I removed the sling slowly, stripped and got into the shower. Mom peeped into the bathroom door. I have a habit of bathing without locking the door. “Your father wants to talk to alpha Ross when he gets there. You need to hurry and get out.” Mom told me before walking away.
Adam has been acting strange since I kissed him two nights ago.
‘You sent him home with a bulge in his pants,’ Aiyana barked a laugh.
‘Tell me again, why should we go?’ I asked, ignoring her comment.
‘To find our mate.’ She snickered, even though she knows very well that I would rather stay in my room and paint. ‘Is Zara going?’ She asked.
‘No, Uncle Amedeo would never agree, especially now that dad is leaving him in charge of the pack in his absence.’ I shrugged when I saw what mom placed on my bed. A white lacy underwear set and a medium length red cocktail dress. I sighed, struggling to apply my cinnamon-rose lotion and dressed.
I stood in front of the mirror admiring my funky haircut, which enhanced my natural oval face.
“Adam.” I invited him in, since he was standing next to the door. I stared at him like it was the first time I lay my eyes on him. Wearing a tan coloured suit that hugged his scrumptious muscles. I didn’t have to say why I called him. He zipped my dress and helped me wear the shoulder sling.
“You look fine.” I spoke, breaking the silence.
“Thank you. You look stunning.” He smirked.
I opened my mouth to say something, but got disturbed by Zara merrily screaming as she entered my room. “Hell no, you are not going to the coronation looking that plain.” She pouted, leading me to the chair and pampered my face.
“Now you look like a doll.” She said, proud of her art.
Adam cleared his throat, staring at us from the door. “Sorry to cut your frenzy, but we need to go.”
“I will see you tomorrow and don’t give me cousins this soon.” I winked at her.
Dad had an intense facial expression even though he was trying to hide it with constant affection for mom. I wonder what happened at their meeting.
We got to the airport and got into the jet. It took off as soon as we buckled our safety belts. “I see dad is in a hurry. The poor pilot had to be rushed.” I giggled when he glanced at me with a grin.
The sunset painted a red sky as we landed. There was a limo waiting for us. We got in and drove away. It took half an hour to get to the Cyclone Moon pack. Aiyana squirmed about restlessly. ‘What’s with you?’ I asked with concern, because she has never been like this before.
‘I don’t know.’ She whimpered.
‘Maybe you should rest a little while.’ I said. She nodded, resting her muzzle on her front paws.
I jeered at Adam for opening the door for me, fixing the sling as I got out of the car.
“Keep close, I want to speak to Luna Verona for a while.” Mom told me, rushing inside with dad.
“Let’s go to the garden. I need to breathe for a moment. Please?” I blinked at him.
We got to the garden quietly. I was worried about Aiyana’s constant whining. ‘Girl, are you okay?’ I asked.
‘I feel like I am floating in the air like a balloon.’ She whimpered.
“You seem worried.” Adam interrupted my talk with my wolf.
“Aiyana has been acting funny since we got here and she doesn’t know why.” I replied, staring at my stiletto heels that gave my 5’5” height a boost.
“Maybe the unfamiliar environment is affecting her. Tell her it’ll be okay.” He spoke with concern in his tone.
An omega came and told us the ceremony was about to start in the ballroom. “Adam, I need to go to the ladies. Unless you want to come to help me pee!” I grinned, watching him grimace.
“I will wait for you.” He replied, helping me stand up.
I got to the toilet cubicle and did my business. Rinsing my hands as soon as I was done. I nodded to a tall, slim lady with red hair, fixing her makeup. The pink lipstick made her pale skin pop.
“That thing looks uncomfortable.” She smiled, pointing at my shoulder.
“You don’t know how much I want it gone.” Returning the smile.
“Gillian.”
“Pardon me?”
“Oh, my name and you are?” She asked, extending her hand.
“Wilona.” I shook her left hand.
“Nice to meet you and enjoy the evening.” She took her clutch bag and left.
Wow, she was sweet and welcoming. Ignoring my sudden lightheadedness, I shuffled out of the privy.
Aiyana was still on edge, especially when we entered the hall, decorated nicely for an alpha ceremony. “Did they invite the entire island?” I asked Adam. “Perhaps.” He replied. We went almost to the front and took our seats on a round table. I watched the young alpha walk to the stage with his father. Suddenly, feeling drawn to him. ‘Hell no, Aiyana.’
She whined, pacing my head.
‘We have to look into his eyes before I can confirm what we are feeling.’ She replied with a shrill bark.
The alpha introduced Konrad, but with a scowl on his face, he was not aware of what his father said.
“Is that even constitutional, Dad?” He replied with a shake of his head.
“Maybe it’s their way of ensuring balance among the pack.”
After the alpha’s speech, the omegas served us starters, a classic prawn cocktail with avocado. They ate in silence while I poked at my food.
“Are you okay?” Adam asked in a whisper.
I set down my fork, grimacing. “I think what Aiyana has affected me.”
“What’s wrong?” Mom asked, concerned.
“I don’t know... but I just lost my appetite.” I replied, feeling my palm sweat.
Dad eyed me with curiosity. I looked away, not knowing how to explain myself.
A seductive, masculine sandalwood smell invaded my nostrils.
‘Mate,’ Aiyana howled in confusion.
