Wilona’s POV
I have been floating in nothingness and I don't know for how long. Dreaming about things that make little sense. My body is sore and my shoulder is burning. I opened my eyes, clenched them tight when the sharp light sipped through them. Trying again, the first thing I saw was the pure white ceiling. The smell of bleach struck my nostrils, confirming I was in the hospital. ‘Aiyana.’ I whispered in my mind. She replied with a soft snore. I lowered my eyes. Uncle Amedeo and Zara were fast asleep and pressed together on the sofa. “Uncle.” My throat hurt with dryness. I hissed as I clenched the sheet tight, tempting to pull myself up.
Suddenly, the door opened. “Wilona.” Mom and dad exclaimed as they rushed inside the room. Dad slapped uncle Amedeo on his shoulder, while mom grasped me in her arms. He jumped, almost dropping Zara on the floor. “We expected you to tell us when she wakes up.” Dad scowled, moving to sit next to me.
“Water,” I said in a whisper. Mom poured me a glass. The coolness of the water soaked the dryness in my throat. Quenching my throat.
“You look like a zombie, sunshine.” Uncle Amedeo spoke with a chuckle, kissing my forehead and disregarding dad’s remark.
“What an exaggeration. Don’t worry, you still look pretty though, with a grimaced face.” Zara added as she kissed my cheek since mom did not want to let me go. They tempted me to laugh, but a cough left my lips.
“Alpha, Luna. Please excuse us.” She lowered her head at mom and dad, before grasping uncle Amedeo’s hand and leading him out of the room.
I moaned when mom’s hug got tighter. “Annunziata, you are hurting her,” Dad said.
Mom looked at me apologetically. “I am sorry; I am overjoyed that you are awake.” She kissed my forehead.
“It’s okay, mom.” I closed my eyes, feeling my shoulder stiffen. “How long was I asleep?”
“Eleven days since the incident. You developed an infection a few days ago, but it was nothing the doctor could not handle.” Dad replied, and I nodded.
They told me about Laila being here with me and released her three days ago. I was glad her surgery went well. Mom also told me how excited she was for the renovation project at the orphanage and the houses that were affected by the heavy rain while I was in a coma.
“When are grandma and grandpa coming back?” I asked, staring at dad. He cleared his throat, but before saying a word, the doctor walked into the room to check on me.
After a while, he spoke. “Everything seems fine. You should thank your wolf for that. I recommend you wear the shoulder sling all the time and attend physical therapy for the next four months, depending on your recovery. I also suggest that you avoid using your shoulder until I clear you. And please don’t rush your healing.” He smiled.
Dad followed him outside with a bothered expression.
“Your father and I have to meet with other alphas regarding the upcoming celebration. I will check on you later.” She brushed my short hair with her fingers, then gave me my phone.
“I love you, mom.”
“I love you more.”
I watched her disappear through the door and sighed, checking my phone. Most messages were from Zara and a few of the pack members, wishing me well. Before placing my phone down, the blue light blinked. I opened it and stared at the name Konrad Roth.
‘Hello, darling.’ Aiyana said with a groan.
‘I missed your commanding voice.’ I snickered, scrawling on my phone.
‘You drained my energy. Are you well?’ She yawned.
I opened Konrad’s picture, kneeling with his left knee on the ground. The background of a mountain covered in snow swallowed him. He blended nicely with the snow, wearing all white. The hood of his jacket covered his face.‘The only thing I see is his pink cheeks and chin.’ I said.
‘You sound disappointed.’ She snorted. ‘Accept it already. Besides, you don’t have too many people in your contacts.’ She said with a jaded tone.
‘Fine.’ I pressed accept and placed my phone down, feeling the effect of the medication. My eyes drooped, and I let myself fall into darkness.
“Hello.” Hot breath fanned my ear in a whisper. A firm hand stroked my head soothingly. I blinked my eyes, staring into the cute blue eyes of Adam. “You look horrible.” He snickered.
“You are fortunate I am hurt,” I said with a smirk.
“I spoke to your doctor, and he said you can stretch your legs. Are you up for it?” He asked, studying my face.
“Where are we going?”
He offered me his hand to balance. “It’s a surprise.”
I leaned on his arm as we walked to the door, roamed the corridor, leading me to the exit written for staff only. I stared at him with a raised brow.
He chuckled and opened the door for us to go into the quiet room. “You stood me up, remember? I hope you like what I planned for you.”
My mouth opened, staring at the tiny dimmed canteen. We sat on the two chairs facing each other, with a small round table in the middle. There were two plates closed with a plastic lid. Two candles burning in the middle of the table. He looked at me with adoration and longing. “So you organized all of this?” He opened the lids, letting the tantalizing aroma fill my nose, making me swallow my saliva in anticipation. “Let’s just say I had a few favours to ask.” He winked at me, placing the glass of water in front of me.
“How come you did nothing like this when we were dating?” I asked as I bite on the potato.
“I was naïve to even think about such things.” He answered nonchalantly.
“Your mate will be lucky to have this new you.”
“How many times do I have to tell you I... never mind.” He brushed his hair back with a sigh.
We ate our meal comfortably. “Thank you for this.” I said, breaking the silence.
“You’re welcome.”
After our delightful meal, he led me back to my bed.
“How would you feel if I go with you to the Acilith province as your date for the coronation?” He asked while sitting on the bed next to me. I looked at him with my head slightly tilted to the side.
“I would not allow you to miss your weekend pay just to escort me to a function I don’t want to go to.” I clenched my jaw with closed eyes, letting myself settle on the pillow.
“I am going with you...” He hesitated, but continued. “... I am off on the weekend and it would make me happy seeing that you are safe.”
“What are you not telling me, Adam?” I asked him, my curiosity peaked.
He nervously fiddled with the hem of his shirt. The door opened, and dad walked into the room.
“He is your guard as from today onwards.” His eyes darted between Adam and me.
“Adam, could you please give us a moment?” I asked, not losing eye contact with dad.
“Okay, I will be outside.” He hurried out of the room and closed the door.
Dad grabbed the chair resting next to my bed with a sigh. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes... he seemed tired.
“Why do I need to have a guard with me? If it’s the injury I got, then.”
“Wilona… it’s not about your injury. You are going to be our Alpha. It’s better to have someone monitoring you.” He said, interrupting me.
There was a brief silence, and I watched his eyes flicker from dark brown to yellow in anger. I could tell the rage was not meant for me. Something is bothering him and he would not tell me. But my stubbornness told me to find out. “Dad, what’s going on?” I asked, wiping the sweat off my hands with the sheet.
“The less you know, the better. Adam will be with you all the time.”
“Why him? Why not Edgar or Jude?” I know better when he had already decided.
“Because… your mother preferred him.” He flexed his shoulder muscles and stood up from the chair, pinching his eyelids. “I know he would do anything to protect you. I will see you soon.” He kissed my forehead.
“Dad… am I in danger?” He stopped for a moment without turning, then left without saying a word.
The door closed, and I gazed at Adam. “Why do I feel you have convinced my parents to choose you to be my guard?” I observed his nervousness as he sat on the chair that dad occupied. He crossed his arms over his chest. What are they not telling me?
‘I am curious to find out too.’ Aiyana barked. “Adam, what the hell is going on?”
