CHAPTER SIXTEEN Dakota sat in the stationary car as raindrops drummed against the windshield. She liked the seclusion. It gave her time to think. She glanced through the glass at the rain clouds that had rolled quickly across the horizon. It reminded her of a case she'd once had in Seattle. In Illinois, though, the rain didn't come in spurts. When it arrived, it threatened to stay for as long as it wanted. Water now streaked through the streets and droplets stippled the windows. She watched sympathetically as a couple of police officers held newspapers over their heads and raced up the steps into the precinct. Marcus was still speaking with their suspect, but she'd already texted him the bad news. The alibi checked out. Both employees had vouched for Mr. Kramer. They could be lying,
