Casey's P.O.V
Katherine came over and sat on the bed next to me, wrapping her arms around me and hugging me. This was the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life and I thought that once I got in here I would know exactly what to do and where to start, but I didn't and my mind had gone blank.
"It's ok, we have all day take your time." Katherine said, I nodded and sat there looking around, memories started flowing back to me. I remember when I was a little girl and it was raining hard, the thunder was so loud it scared me and I ran in here, lying between my mom and dad, they both held me until I fell asleep.
"I just don't understand, why would someone do this to them? They weren't bad people, they didn't have any enemies and they were good to me. I loved them. Why would someone do this?" I said, trying to make sense of something that was senseless.
"I'm sorry." Katherine said, resting her head against mine. After a few minutes I got up from the bed and opened the drawer of my mother's dresser. I looked through the first drawer and found nothing but under garments. Katherine went and got some more trash bags, keep bags and boxes, just in case we needed more.
"I didn't know which you needed, so I bought all of them." Katherine said, putting them down.
"I don't think we can donate underwear, so we'll just throw this out." I said, turning and putting them in the trash bags. I did the same with my dad's socks and boxers, then I moved on to the closet. I packed up all of their clothes except for a few dresses and my moms wedding dress, I wanted to keep them.
"Do you want me to start in the bathroom?" Katherine asked.
"Please, there is nothing i want to keep in there, so it can all go in the trash." I replied, she grabbed a trash bag and made her way into the bathroom, while I cleared out the night stands, throwing most of it away except for a few pictures. I took one last look around the room and saw the treasure chest at the foot of the bed, I picked it up and put it in the keep pile. I saw something sticking out from under the bed and got down on my hands and knees, there were a few photo albums and a briefcase. I decided to keep all of them and go through them later, if I started going through things now I would never leave.
"The bathrooms done, how is it going in here?" Katherine said, hauling a bag of rubbish out.
"Everything's cleared out. I need to call the thrift shop though to arrange collection, do you know their number." I replied and Katherine took her phone out, finding the number. She loved looking through thrift shops. She gave me the number and I called it straight away, the sooner it's done the better.
"Hello, I was wondering if you take in used furniture?" I asked, there was a pause and then the lady on the other end answered.
"Yes ma'am we do." The lady said, politely. I've never been called ma'am before, it felt a bit weird.
"Great, I'll give you the address, when can you be here for?" I asked, the line went quiet and for a moment I wondered if they had hung up.
"We can be there in four hours, the driver will give you a call when he is close by." The lady finally replied, she must have had to check.
"Okay, thank you." I replied, I gave her the address and hung up.
"We have four hours before the truck gets here, to sort out the rest of the house, clearing out what we do and don't want. clear out whatever we want, and what we don't." I said, turning to Katherine, she nodded.
"Well let's get started, we have only four hours to get it done." Katherine replied, I sighed sitting down on the bed.
"I know it's hard honey. If you want to stop for today, we can. We'll just tell them to take what's upstairs and come back tomorrow for the rest." Katherine said, but I shook my head, I just want to get this over and done with. I don't think I would be able to face coming back again. It's been three hours and we still have the downstairs to do.
"If I don't do this now, I'll end up leaving and not come back. I know this is hard, but I need to do this or people will come in here and ransack the house, taking everything." I replied, Katherine nodded, slapped her knees and stood up.
"Alright, we got all the boxes and trash downstairs, we need to head down and start in the kitchen." Katherine said, holding out her hand for me, I sighed, took her hand and she pulled me to my feet. We made our way downstairs to the kitchen and I looked around thinking where to start. We packed up all the dishes, silverware and utensils, throwing away everything else, except for one of the cookie jars that I was keeping. The kitchen was done and the next room was the one I was dreading most, the family room. Katherine started taking stuff out to the truck again, while I made my way to the family room, I stood frozen in my spot with my hand wrapped around the door knob. The last time I walked in here, my parents were lying dead on the floor and to say that I was scared of opening the door was an understatement. Well here goes nothing, I turned the door knob and opened the door, their blood still coated the floor and I quickly shut the door. I couldn't let anyone see the room like that, my mom was always house proud and would kill me if I left it in that state. I didn't want to go in there, I didn't want to see that again, I didn't want to see their blood, but I knew I had to, I had to do right by my parents.
