"Did something happen while I was gone? Uncle and aunt look serious." Nyra entered the room and asked. She picked up her towel with a small frown, wondering what had happened in her absence.
Naeva shrugged, "Don't ask me. I behaved myself."
Nyra freshened up and went straight to the living room to find out what it was that they wanted to tell her. Naeva was already waiting for her as well.
Emily took a deep breath, stole a glance at Naeva, then decided to ignore her and focus on Nyra.
"Nyra, we have found a good mateship partner for you. Today your uncle and I went to meet up with him and everything seemed good to us. He is from Wingreen pack and is quite well off. Actually, his mate died in childbirth six months ago and he needs someone caring and loveable to take care of him and his child. We thought it'd be a good match for you and agreed with that."
Emily said those words with no hesitation. It left Nyra and Naeva speechless as they tried to make heads and tails of the situation. Did they just fix a mateship for Nyra without asking for her opinion on it? Of course, Nyra had nothing against a man who had a small child as long as he was a good person, but shouldn't they talk to her about it before fixing it directly?
The fact that they didn't even consider her feelings made Nyra feel uncomfortable about this mateship. If one were to think about it, didn't aunt Emily reject a mateship with a similar background a couple of days ago? What was the difference between the two? Did they receive a large sum from Kevin? The thought alone left a bitter taste in Nyra's mouth.
Nyra wasn't good at complaining, but Naeva was. She immediately lashed out at them for doing something so insensitive towards her sister.
"Why the hell did you agree to something related to my sister without asking her first? Mateship isn't a small thing. Nyra will be stuck in it for the rest of her life! At the very least, they should meet up first and then ask if she wants to go ahead with it. Why did you agree before asking? Does consent mean anything to you?"
Gregory responded resolutely, "We saw it was a good match and secured it. I'm sure Nyra will like him. He is quite famous for his goodwill. Naeva, you must have heard of Kevin Lokman, right? He is a low rank in the Lycan organization. Although it's a low rank, he is still a lot better than many average werewolves. He already has a son, so he won't pressure Nyra into bearing one for him. Nyra needs a good family and he needs a girl to complete his family. Isn't it perfect?"
His reasoning was impeccable. Kevin Lokman was indeed a man who's name is widespread in their society for his good deeds. On the surface, he does seem like the perfect man for Nyra.
It was very easy to fool anyone with a shining appearance. Just like their uncle and aunt were fooled. But Naeva wasn't born yesterday. In fact, she knew more about Kevin than any other person in this pack. She saw him at work almost every day. Buzzing around a new woman every other week and pretending to be a saint in front of others. If Naeva knowingly let Nyra fall into this trap, wouldn't she commit a crime against her sister?
"I know what kind of a good man he is, but excuse me, my sister is not worthy of such a good man. He could find himself an even better girl. Nyra won't be going through with this mateship. Call them to cancel it as soon as possible."
Naeva was adamant about her decision. She couldn't state why exactly she didn't want her sister to be with that man because then she'd have to reveal her work information which she didn't want to. Gregory and Emily weren't happy about it.
"Just now you told us off for deciding on Nyra's place, but here you are doing the same thing," Emily went off, "Shouldn't you let her decide? Also, we have already taken the initial token from them and it's hard to give it back. We have raised you for twenty years, so shouldn't you do a little bit to pay it back?!"
"Those twenty years were nothing less of a torture, so don't you dare bring it up. And if you've taken the token, then give it back. I don't care." Naeva took hold of Nyra's arm, pulled her back up and took her back into their room. Nyra was still immersed in her thoughts until she found herself seated on the hard mattress.
"Why did you say that? Isn't it good for me? A mateship is the only way I can live with people like you. And Kevin does seem like a good guy," Nyra asked her sister.
"Trust me, that man is no good. I've heard not so pleasant things about him from various reliable sources," Naeva replied distressfully, "But I don't think my aunt and uncle will cancel this mateship. From the look of it, they must have already spent the money given by Kevin."
"But still -"
"Look, trust me on this, okay? I know he is not a good person. I cannot let you ruin your life like this. I understand your feelings. You want to find a place for yourself among these people. But they are rotten inside out," Naeva went on her knees to face Nyra. She looked her sister in the eye and said, "Nyra, I don't think humans are bad. Should we go and live among them?"
Nyra's reaction was expected. It wasn't that she had never thought about it before, but she knew it was impossible to truly fit in among them. Coming from Naeva, it sounded even more impossible.
Nyra was about to panic. When she came back from work, her only thought was to eat a good dinner and have a good sleep (since Naeva was home to help her with it). She didn't think her life was going to take such a turn without any warning!
"But how is that possible? All of a sudden! What are you thinking, Naeva?"
"Nyra! Can we talk to you for a minute?!" Aunt Emily knocked on their door. The door was locked. Naeva opened it and let them in. Uncle Gregory came in first and spoke to Nyra.
"Nyra, as your uncle, I don't want to force you into anything. You are old enough to act on your own now. But you have to think about us as well. Although it may look like we say it often, it is still the truth that we raised you both for twenty years. We are not asking for a repayment. Just know that we want to give you a better home." Gregory said softly. He almost never spoke like this, so Nyra was taken aback. A fist gripped her heart tightly as he continued.
"Also, you are big enough now, so I will tell you now. I have encountered some issues like work. I was about to get a promotion, but something happened and it was stopped. I needed funds urgently and the token money was spent this afternoon. I cannot cancel this mateship now. Can't you do this much for your family? It's not like you are sacrificing a lot. You have to agree to a mateship today or tomorrow. So why not help your uncle while you are at it?"
Aunt Emily chipped in, "Yes, Nyra. You are not gonna lose anything by agreeing to it. In turn, it will benefit us."
Uncle Gregory added without missing a beat, "They called us just now. After discussing among themselves, Kevin wants to hold the ceremony on the eighteenth. You have to co-operate with this, Nyra."
"What? That's not enough time to think about it!" Nyra protested.
Naeva corrected, "Not that she was going to think about it anyway, but that's not enough time to do anything! And why didn't you tell them that Nyra isn't going to go through with it?"
Emily took a deep breath and answered, "Naeva, we have already spent the large sum of money they gave us! It was a necessary investment for our well-being. They are in a bit of a hurry, that's it. And it's not wrong. They are good people. Don't make it look like we are throwing Nyra into a trap!"
"That is your problem. Fix it however you want. My sister is not going to agree to this."
"I'd like to see how not!" Uncle Gregory raised his voice over Naeva's. Their shouts made Nyra flinch. She shrunk her neck, stood behind Naeva and closed her eyes.
She absolutely hated it.
"I will call the Alpha tomorrow and have him decide on this matter. And we will do as he says! You have to agree to it if he says so! Otherwise you know the consequences!" Uncle Gregory gave Naeva a warning stare and left the room. Aunt Emily shook her head, thinking how unreasonable these sisters were.
Once they were gone, Nyra sat on the bed and gulped down a glass of water to sooth her nerves. Naeva stood with her back facing Nyra, lost in her own thoughts.
"Naeva, let's not complicate things," Nyra said in a soft tone. She wanted to agree to the mateship just to avoid all the mess that would be created by going against it.
Sometimes Nyra's decisions revolved around these feelings. There weren't any contemplations involved, just the fact that she would be able to live a little more comfortably over the span of a few days. And that was completely fine as long as it didn't impact her in a bad way.
"Nyra, listen to me," Naeva said seriously as she sat next to Nyra. She pulled her close and whispered into her ear, "We have to run away before Alpha Roin comes home tomorrow."
"What?" Nyra's shocked gasp was hard to control. Her wide eyes tried to see if Naeva was making a bad joke. Was running away so easy? Is it done within a day? Of course not! Running away needs a lot of planning and arrangement! And if they get caught ....
Naeva knew her sister very well. Seeing her scared face, Naeva explained it more clearly.
"Look, Alpha Roin and uncle are good friends. It's no brainer that Alpha Roin will nod to his terms and force you to agree to this mateship. If you or I go against it, then they might take away our status as pack members. A rogue's mark will make it impossible to survive outside the pack. I don't want you to jump into a trap and not do I want us to die with rogue marks. So we have to leave before that happens. Do you get it? It's our only chance."
A rogue's mark given to exiled members was different from regular rogues. Regular rogues were just werewolves without a pack. Maybe their packs were wiped out or they left on their own. They live alone and are free to wander among humans and on unclaimed grounds.
A rogue's mark makes a lot of difference. A member who commits a crime, goes against moral conduct or defies the Alpha, is marked with a disgraceful mark and thrown out of the pack. That mark makes them an enemy of not only that particular pack, but also other werewolves and rogues. A werewolf of any rank or status, even a rogue, is permitted to kill a rogue with the mark.
It would be a nightmare to live with a rogue mark. Running away was the best option for them. Nyra understood the concept of a rogue mark and it deeply scared her. She didn't want to keep running away for the rest of her life, wondering if she or her sister would survive until the next hour.
"Are you sure I cannot just agree? Isn't it easier to go along with fate and accept it?" Nyra tried again. Naeva shook her head resolutely. Nyra sighed and nodded, "Alright. But can we manage to leave with no preparation?"
"Leave that to me. Just do what I say and tomorrow we will be free from these people. I have everything settled, so just relax and don't think much about it," Naeva smiled and gave her some instructions, "Now I will go out and then you go downstairs to tell them that you agree to the mateship, going against me. They will think I stormed out in anger and won't think much about it. I will take this opportunity to arrange everything for us."
Nyra's nervousness was showing in her eyes. She had never done anything so daring and the mere thought of trying to run away was so daunting to her that she'd rather agree for real. Her trust in Naeva was the only thing keeping her from doing it.
Naeva stood up, took a deep breath, made an angry face and stormed out of the room. Her angry footsteps made heavy sounds on her way out. Nyra counted twenty seconds, then came the loud shutting of the front door. Naeva was out of the house. Nyra counted another five seconds and left the room.
Gregory and Emily were in the living room looking relaxed. The way Naeva left the house showed that the sisters had a disagreement. Which could only mean one thing...
"Aunt, Uncle, can I talk to you?" Nyra went downstairs and timidly stood by the stairs. Emily happily nodded.
"Yes, go ahead."
"I-I agree with the mateship. I am sorry for the drama earlier. Naeva is bold and often doesn't think about the consequences of her actions. Please don't take it to heart. I will do as you say."
Gregory was satisfied with the docile behaviour. He didn't think Nyra would dare lie to their faces.
"Alright. At least you are smart enough to know what's good for you. Today is the fifteenth, we will leave for Wingreen pack on the seventeenth. Kevin will hold the ceremony in his own pack. Your aunt will arrange everything for you, so just stay at home. Don't leave the house until we leave for the ceremony. You heard me?"
That sounded more like a warning. Nyra nodded and quickly ran upstairs, further allowing them to relax their minds. Nyra had no idea what Naeva was going to do. She had no choice but to wait until she came back.
