Finally when Cathy, Chris’s widow stopped weeping Nat guided her to a bench nearby, close to the boundary of the cemetery.
“I should not be going away from him for too long…they will be coming to pay their respects, you know,” sniffled Cathy as she dabbed her cheeks with the kerchief. Cadence was busy with Christina and he seemed very comfortable with her in his arms. After all he had been on baby-sitting duty for her sister’s kids for all the time when he was back home and he loved them more than he could ever speak of.
“What are you doing now? With Christina? I mean, work should be good at the moment to keep your mind off the things,” said Nathaniel as Cathy nodded at him.
“Yes I am thinking of that as well. They have asked me to take leave for as much time as I want and my maternity leave is also ongoing but I don’t want to remain cooped up at home for too long. It is very difficult there, with all his memories and every single time I have a feeling he is going to jump out from somewhere and make me drop the bowl from my hand,” said Cathy as she smiled at the memory and Nat also smiled. He could easily imagine Chris doing that.
“He will be always there Cathy. You might not be able to see him but he is always going to be a part of your lives. Moreover, you have Christina as well. As far as I saw, she has Chris’s eyes,” said Nat with a kind smile and Cathy’s eyes welled up once again.
“Well Admiral Night has told me to tell you again and again that if you need any kind of help regarding anything then you should not be hesitating to say at all. And if you can’t go to him, then talk to me Cathy, or to Cadence, we are always going to be there for you,” said Nat as Cadence came back with Christina who was now fussing.
“I think she is hungry. I don’t know where her bottle is or I would have tried to feed her. I think she likes staying outdoors,” said Cadence as Cathy held out her arms and Christina immediately leapt into her mother’s arms and Cathy started speaking in such language that only a mother could use.
“I think it is time that I take her home. It has been a long day and we both would like to take some rest, if that is alright with you,” said Cathy as she stood up and Cadence brought the stroller to put Christina down.
“Of course it is alright with us. You should have been gone a long time back Cathy. But I think, there is one thing that we should do, and I suppose you would not say anything to that,” said Nat as he looked at cadence and he gave a soft grin.
“What is it boys? Tell me? Don’t tell me you got a prank planned for Admiral Night. Now that I would love to see,” said Cathy with a smile of her own. This woman was the perfect catch for any soldier and now the one who had her for real was gone.
“Aaah!! Alas…we had not thought of that before but we thought that it would be a good idea for Christina to have something like which her dad wore always,” said Nat as he took out a small box out of his pocket. It was a jewellery box.
“Oh no Nat!!! I possibly cannot,” said Cathy as she saw the box and Nat said,” Babe, you gotta look at the thing first, then you have to say if you will take it or not. Anyways, this is not for you. This is a gift for her niece from her Uncles who are gonna spoil her rotten her whole life.”
Nat opened the box and Cathy gasped in awe. It was the dog-tags that they wore. All of the SEALs. But this one was in a much smaller version, fit for a girl to wear for about till her teens.
“We figured that the original ones would be too big for her to wear. But this ones are going to fit her perfectly. The serial number that Chris had has been imprinted in the exact same way,” said Cadence as Cathy again started crying. So Cadence did not wait much longer and then he took out the necklace and put it on Christina. She looked at the shiny metallic thing happily and clutched it hard.
“Look at her!!! She likes it as well…and it looks so good on her,” said Nat as he caught hold of her arms and Cathy said,” how can I ever repay you for something like this?”
“Hey Cathy, don’t insult us by saying that. There is nothing to repay at all. We were buddies and best friends since the very first day of our training and we will be friends for life wherever he might, we are sure he is now he is gonna save places for both of us,” said Nat as she smiled despite her tears.
“And if you feel that you would need some time to let down your hair amidst all this problem then just give us a call, we are going to make sure that you enjoy yourself. You really need some time off to pamper yourself,” said Cadence as Cathy rolled her eyes and both the men walked her toward her car and then helped her load Christina in the baby seat at the back and looked at Cathy and then waved her goodbye as she drove the car away from the cemetery.
Both the men walked down to their bases because they felt they needed the exercise. Rather it was more of letting and feeling out something since they had been forced to take holidays and leaves which they did not want to.
“Are you going to talk to your old man?” asked Cadence and Nat just glared at him once which more than enough answer was for his friend.
