The next morning I woke up early so I could get ready to go to school. My dad was going to have to drop me off before he headed into work, so we made a plan for me to eat breakfast at school instead of with the family this morning. It was bittersweet because I wanted to stay and enjoy the day with Cheyenne and her parents, but I knew that I would be spending the whole day with Demitri, so it wasn’t a horrible trade off. I have been wanting to get to know him better for some reason.
I made sure to send Demitri a text asking if he would be okay with us spending the whole day together at school. He responded quickly with Of course :). His response made me smile. I’m so glad I am starting to make more friends and I am so glad they are willing to be friends with Cheyenne as well.
After dad dropped me off at school, I headed straight for the dining hall. Demitri was patiently waiting outside the doors for me and he smiled when he saw me coming. “Good morning, sunshine. How are you this morning?”
I giggle and shake my head. “I thought you weren’t allowed to go outside into the sun.”
He smirks and shrugs his shoulders. “I’m not, but it is still something I have wished I could do. Anyway, how are you this morning?”
I smile and nod my head. “I’m good. I just wish Cheyenne were here today.”
Demitri smiles sadly and nods his head. “I think I understand, but just in case, why don’t you tell me why you wish Cheyenne was here.”
I smile and giggle before I nod my head. “Well, she is my best friend. Typically we are both together for our birthdays. This is the first year since before we were in school that we won’t get to spend our birthdays with each other.”
Demitri sighs and nods his head. “I think I understand now. You are sad because she is your best friend and her not being here or you being here without her is breaking a tradition that has been going on for about thirteen years.”
I smile and nod my head. “Exactly! I’m typically the one who sings Happy Birthday to her first. I’m typically the one who gives her a birthday gift first. This year is just going to be different because of it being our eighteenth birthdays.”
Demitri nods his head and gestures for me to go into the dining hall. I do as he suggests and then turn back around as he continues to follow me. “I guess I will play the Devil’s advocate on this, but isn’t it going to be nice not having her around today? Normally this day is all about her because it is her birthday. Now it can be just a normal school day for you and then tonight can be all about her.”
I purse my lips and try to think of it from his point of view. I sigh as I head over to the omelet station to get an everything omelet to start my breakfast. “The thing is, I want the whole day to be about her. I don’t like the days being about me. Well, I don’t mind sharing the days, but I don’t want them to be all about me. I like the balance that they have. We share our days together and it just all seems right. I don’t know, I just know I don’t know what to do since she won’t be here.”
Demitri smirks and shakes his head. “I have an idea if you are willing to listen to it.”
I purse my lips and then nod my head. “I’ll hear you out, but I won’t guarantee that I will agree to your idea.”
Demitri smirks and nods his head. “That is a fair statement. Anyway, why don’t you and I spend the whole day together getting to know each other. Since Cheyenne isn’t here, history class is going to be pretty much nothing. Our Chemistry class we will have a thirty minute lecture and an hour of free time after that. Our Trigonometry class should just be doing homework or doing a worksheet today, since it is Friday. We can honestly spend the whole day doing whatever we want to do.”
I smile and nod my head slowly. “I have to say, that isn’t a bad idea. I mean, we know each other, but we don’t truly know each other. If we are going to have to be world leaders together in the future, it would be nice to know the more personal and intimate details about one another.”
Demitri smirks and nods his head. “Exactly. So, do we have a deal?” He extends his hand to me and I look down at it quizzically.
I c**k my head to the side and look up into his eyes. “Isn’t there some weird rule about not shaking a vampire’s hand after they say the word deal?”
Demitri chuckles and shakes his head. “No, that is for demons. Vampires you aren’t supposed to allow them to feed off you without turning you into a vampire. There are other reasons for that, but in all honesty it doesn’t really matter. Do we have a deal?”
I sigh and take his hand. It is oddly warm for someone who is supposed to be dead. “We have a deal. Now, what are you going to eat for breakfast?”
Demitri shakes his head and holds up a weird coffee cup. “I don’t eat breakfast, I just drink… Well, we call it something else, but it is essentially coffee for vampires.”
I nod my head and look at the cup quizzically. “What exactly is it?”
Demitri sighs and nods towards a table. “Why don’t we grab a seat so you can eat and I can enjoy my Feline Extract.”
I nod my head and quickly finish filling my plate. Once I had gotten everything I was planning on eating for the morning and a large glass of milk, We headed over to a table in the center of the room but outside of the hearing range for the other students coming in for breakfast. I take a quick bite of my omelet before I nod towards his cup. “So, it is called Feline Extract?”
Demitri smirks as he takes a swig. He pulls the cup down and shakes his head. “No, it is just called Extract. Mine just happens to be of the feline variety for this morning.”
I nod my head. “This may seem like a really stupid question, but does all blood taste the same?”
Demitri chuckles and shakes his head. “No, that is not a stupid question. Believe it or not, we get that question a lot. To answer your question, no, not all blood tastes the same. Some blood has a more gamey flavor, like that of a fish or deer. Others have more of an earthy flavor, like cows and chickens. Other animals have their own distinct flavors and affect us the same way some foods affect humans. For example, feline and canine blood acts more like coffee for us. We do have carbonated blood that has been sweetened to give us more of a soda style drink.”
I nod my head. “I see… So what…Ugh!” I freak out as something cold and wet flows down my back. I stand up quickly and turn around as I come face to face with none other than Anya.
She smirks at me and then puts her hand to her mouth. “Oh no! What happened, little human girl?”
I look down at the back of my arms as I realize what happened. Anya spilled her ice, cold drink on me, and that drink just so happened to be blood. I turn around slowly and look at Demitri who seems to be in shock. I shake my head. “I’m sorry, I have to go.” I grab my backpack and rush out of the dining hall.
“Wait! Emily!” Demitri calls after me, but I don't listen. I need to get to the bathroom and quick. I don’t want this to ruin this top.
When I get into the bathroom, I quickly pull my shirt off over my head and start trying to rinse the blood out in the sink. I sniffle really quick and that is when I realize that I am crying. Normally, this wouldn’t be such a big deal, but since Cheyenne and I took all of our stuff home with us last night, I have nothing I can change into. I sigh and pull my phone out of my backpack. I have to do this. I have to call my mom.
I dial her number and the phone rings twice before she answers. “Hello? Emily? Is everything alright?”
I sniffle hard and I hear my voice come out really cracked. “Mom… I need to come home. I got blood dumped down my back and I don’t have anything to change into.”
I hear my mother gasp on the other end of the phone. “Don’t worry, Emily. I’m on my way there now!”
I sniffle again and nod my head. “Okay, thank you.” We hang up the phone as I continue to try and rinse my shirt in the sink of the bathroom.
I am so focused on trying to get it cleaned that I don’t hear someone come into the bathroom. I look into the mirror and that is when I see them. I see the glowing red eyes of Anya and she is beyond pissed off.
